    Retired Jersey Numbers

You can't choose them after placing a created player on a team.

It's more than a little distracting looking at an MJ CAP wearing #25.

    Anybody know any workarounds?

This is something that should go in the Wishlist thread, whenever it gets made.

You should be able to assign players a retired number only if you name that player after the player who wore that number.

So only if you create a "Michael Jordan" CAP can you pick 23 on the Bulls, etc.

In that scenario wouldn't they have to pay Michael Jordan out the ***? I think that would count as his likeness being used.

I don't want to seem like an ***, but I don't get the big infatuation over legends. If you want to play with retired players play an older version of the game.

        Re: Retired Jersey Numbers

I can deal(begrudgingly) with things like not having MJ at #23( made him #45), especially if its a thing that the league made them do something. However, what makes no sense is that you can't make Scottie Pippen #33 or David Robinson #50 etc. Those were their numbers so why can't they wear them, that should at least be fixed.

Do the Devs of this game post on here like the Madden guys do? I'd at least like to get an answer as to why this changed from prior versions.

Guys you can't implement crap (name and number recognition) like that without a lot of work.....sometimes ya'll make me wonder.

There was a thread last year where simballer or someone from 2k remarked about retired jersey numbers. Last year they let us use them. This year not?

Wouldn't removing the jersey's be what required the work as opposed to not? Meaning that they put in extra work to have those numbers excluded from certain teams. Sorry I'm just confused as to what your point is. It's not like I can't put MJ on another team and make him #23, the game isn't reacting to the name I put in and saying, "Oh no you made a Jordan, no #23's for you," you just can't give any player any retired number from any franchise that the number is retired by. How about the Blazers who retired #1, but it has still been worn by guys like Rod Strickland and Jarrett Jack.

I said this in the rosters forum but this move just defies logic. This isnt like screwing up the color of a jersey number or not giving someone the right shoes. They had to put in the effort to remove what has been in the game since the game was launched on Dreamcast. Unless someone threatene to sue because a guy has 22 on the Lakers or 33 on the Celtics it makes no sense and serves zero purpose. I hope they patch this.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

With all due respect, it's just not as fun having to settle for Tecmo NBA Basketball if I want to use David Robinson and the 1992 San Antonio Spurs. The historic rosters are excellent because they provide an opportunity to use great players and teams from years past on a current generation gaming system. It's not a whole lot different from those who derive joy from playing with current rosters. It's fun because you are able to use your favorite players (or least favorite, or anything in between) and put yourself in their shoes of sorts.

And unless something drastic changed with the laws regarding licensing within video games and whatnot, it should not be breaking any kind of rule to allow an owner of NBA2K10 to create their own version of Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, or Vinnie Johnson and provide them with their actual jersey numbers. If this were a legal issue then, as someone else already stated, we'd be led to believe that at least the legends already on the game (David Robinson, Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullin) would be able to use their correct jersey numbers on their corresponding teams, but they cannot.

I believe in NBA2K9, if you applied the number 23 to a created player and assigned him to Chicago (in Association at least), it would change his number, but the user had the ability to override that change and keep your fellow at #23. I feel that's the way it should work this year as well.

I feel as though, if 2K did requests, this would be patchable. I'll just go on record as saying that I'd much prefer the option to give my players any jersey number I wanted. Without this option, it will chop the replay value of 2K10 in half in my regard (and a slew of others).

I love making and playing with classic teams. Just one more thing to do...keeps me playing the game regularly after I've gotten bored of association and online. And now 2K has come out of nowhere and totally messed it up, lol.

Where's portlandblazer? He can't be too happy about this.

They should let you set and change what numbers are retired. It could be nice if you could also retire numbers during your association.

ok, i have found a workaround, sorta. but its not up to my standards. what i can do is create a historic team and take it into association and then export the team, then load up the team onto another roster and then it allows you to edit jersey numbers to your liking . the only thing about this is it only allows you to add 10 created teams. in years past with my historic rosters from the 80s and 90s i would do rosters of at least 16 teams so a playoff was possible from that specific season but with ten teams only im not sure what i will do. maybe i will only do the finals participants from each season for now and hope for a patch somewhere down the line but i cant hold my breath cuz i know how 2k is with this sorta thing.

2k never fails to majorly F something up, anyone notice them horrible long socks that go over the knee? why do players with long socks have black all the time? why cant i change the color of socks for teams? stupid! im gonna start another rant thread of my own because every year i need to vent around this time about how 2k is incompetent. maybe it will be a "hey 2k, time to hire portlandblazer" thread.

Excellent find my friend, i hadn't tired the export thing yet, glad to see we can still figure out a way around it sorta. I will probably export the ten teams with most and most popular guys with retired #'s. I think this will work for my purposes. Nice to see MJ back in #23 again.

I don't understand this as well. I mean hell the dev come on here last year and said they allowed us to do this no all of a sudden in 2K10 it is taken away. I have NEVER seen a game where the jersey number where locked out and could never be used. If I'm playing with my Bulls and I sign Bosh I should have the choice of if I want to give him the number 4 or not. Now with 2K10 I don't have that option. It is never a good thing to take options away from the customer. Especially if there is no legal or rules forcing you to do it. There have been a few times in real life where a player has allowed another player to wear his jersey number.

Now thats what I'm talking about. I'm a huge NBA fan and have been since I can remember(mid 1980's) and I just cant bring myself to play with retired legends on current NBA rosters, it just doesn't feel right.

But allowing us to edit the retired numbers, now that would satisfy those who are both opposed and for the issue at hand. I know for instance when Patrick Ewing had his retirement run with the Magic, #33 was taken so he wanted #6, problem was it was retired for "The Fans" so the team un-retired it for him to use and then re-retired it when he finished his career. Allowing us to edit the retired numbers, would allow for instances like that to be managable. I also wish they would allow the user to retire uniform numbers during the Association mode. Being an avid Magic fan I would like to retire #25 and #32 for Nick Anderson and Shaq(eventually) respectfully.

PC version we will be able to get around this easy. But sucks for you console guys. Did anyone find that thread from last year about this? I swear someone complained about 2k giving us the ability to assign retired jerseys and the 2k rep said something like (paraphrase) "you guys always complain about customability so we made this feature editable."

Anyway I find it funny what 2k changes after "suggestions" from users here at OS.
