I Need Some Help With Knicks Roster Management (Draft, FA, Trades, etc...)

So, I am the Knicks. As you know, they are horribly over the salary cap ($28 million over).

My question: will I be able to sign my draft picks? I have 5 picks in the draft and I want that to count.

Also, how do I sign free agents or do trades. The game is always telling me I can't sign anyone or trade for anyone. Yet, in real life the Knicks are doing something because they trade and sign for people all the time.

Any help, information or direction would be great. Thanks in advance.

u cant sign because u r over the cap.

and trades can only happen if......

    A. the money coming in equal the money coming out

    or

    B. If the other team has capspace and they take the whole contact(only if u trade for a pic)

try trading with thoes cheap teams like the Bobcats, they have alot of cap space

How did they draft and sign players during the last draft (e.g. Jordan Hill)?

Thanks for asking! Someone as anal-retentive as I about the "realness" of the Association mode, I'd be glad to give you my tips:

        - You will always be able to sign draft picks, regardless of your cap situation as along as their is a free roster spot available (similar to signing someone for the minimum). That is why the "rookie cap" was approved and forced after the 1994 draft class, so no "holdouts" like the NFL for unproven guys (like Zo Mourning did to Charlotte and Jim Jackson did to Mavericks in 1992)...

        - What are your goals? Now with the "human" element in the Association, its going to take more than just money and your location to sign someone from the FA Class of 2010. You still must be competitive and be a "winning" team after the season...

        - With the roster update, your contracts should be accurate. So Lee and Robinson should have one year deals. You may want to mix it up, and attempt to trade Curry, Harrington, Darko, etc. for guys like Haslem in Miami (who are still good players in their last year), Kenny Thomas in Sac (just old, bad players getting their last payday), and Etan Thomas in OKC (still effective for his role)...

        - It will take time and mutlple attempts with multiple teams to strike deals, so be patient and creative. You may have to add draft picks or another team in a 3-way deal to get these salaries dumped, but good luck to you. It'll be up to you as GM to decide if a chance at a vet FA of 2010 is more important than a rookie coming in...

Check the Association thread to read what I did in Sacramento to accomplish exactly what you are seeking (freeing money while still being competitive). This one is already too long of a read, lol!

        Good luck!

Most of the Knicks roster comes off the books at the end of the season

I actually already traded away Nate Robinson. The Rockets offered me Azira and a 2n round pick for Nate.

So, you already traded away a salary that will be "free" after the season for someone that has a long term deal...

                Again, your goals?

If you're going for realism in your franchise trading Eddie Curry should be near impossible, no one is going to want to take on his deal(since presumably he will pick up the player option of 11 mil or whatever is, since that was his last big payday), you would probably have to give up something of value, just to get another deal that is an expiring deal, to give you more cap space to go after a top FA next year.

But others are right, you still have a lot of deals coming off the books at the end of the season, so it should give you a lot of flexibility in your first off-season to sign a player or two or make some nice trades(taking on more cap space since you will have it).

OMG, I just realized the computer hoodwinked me. Here I thought I was getting a steal, and it was really giving me players with long-term contracts.

Do you think the total of 5 draft picks in this year in any way compensates? I was thinking that I could draft my whole bench. Now, I'm not so sure. (By the way, I don't really know a ton about basketball. At any rate, it's a good thing I can just restart my franchise.)

You are right. How about the extra draft pick, doesn't that help things out?

Not at all since you lose out on the chance to sign a big name free agent for some unproven rook

OMG, the computer tricked me!!! I trusted the computer. I can't believe it did that to me; I'm so hurt. OMG!!!

I didn't know the computer would do that type of stuff to you. Wow! Oh well, I will still try to salvage my Knicks franchise.
