When a player retires before his contract is up are you on the hook for any money?

One person told me you are still hit with his signing bonus.

Another said the contract is just ripped up.

How does it work?

Good question. You could easily run an experiment to find out. Start a franchise as the Giants, extend Jeff Feagles with a big signing bonus and then sim to the off season. Feagles 100% retires every 1st offseason on Giants franchises. If the Giants have any cap penalties (provided you didn't make any other moves) then you are hit with the penalty.

No you are not on the hook? So the rest of the contract is torn up?

I will also try that JayInSaratoga.

No you don't have to pay. Just like Barry Sanders retiring in the prime of his career. The lions didn't have to pay him anymore.
