Rebuilding the Raiders (M10): Post-Davis Era

AL DAVIS SELLS RAIDERS

Al Davis has sold his Oakland Raiders team to Johnathan Johnson, a wealthy aged businessman who was the youngest man to ever join the exclusive Billionaire Club. Johnson bought the team for an undisclosed amount, but a source close to the situation tells me it is at least 3 billion. Said Davis at a press conference, "The losing just started to weigh down on me. It is hard for me to get up some mornings." In a statement released earlier today, Johnson said he is giving co-ownership and control of the team's day-to-day affairs to his son, Eli Johnson. Davis is planning to retire to a tropical area near Miami, FL. Some rumors have been going around about the firing of Head Coach Tom Cable, and this seams even more likely with a new front office intact. Eli Johnson was a minority owner of the Colts before coming to Oakland and so he knows that he has the influence of Jim Irsay and he worked closely with Bill Polian and has learned how to scout prospects to perfection, and most importantly to Raiders fans, has decided to lean towards productivity over "wow" numbers at the NFL Scouting Combine. More updates soon on the Raiders situation.

Favre, Sanchez among 09 retirees

This tackle was the final play of the promising Sanchez' short career.
The injury to Mark Sanchez was more serious than originally thought. The promising young rookie went down on this play against Buffalo, landing awkwardly on his elbow. The diagnosis that was kept in the dark, and finnally released today, was that Sanchez has a fractured vertebrae in his elbow, a career-ending injury.
In other news, Brett Favre retired again(lets see if it lasts) and held (another) emotional press conference announcement.

Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable fired, Titans Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger named new Coach
Raiders fire head coach Tom Cable after his first full season in the new position in which he made progress with the team, leading them to a 5-11 record. Though his team made defensive progress, rookie Aaron Maybin, who was part of the mega Richard Seymour deal, has 20.5 sacks to lead the NFL. Corner Nnamdi Asomugha had 6 interceptions as the Raiders forced teams to throw near him in their new defensive scheme. The problem was the offense, with the successful three back tandem of Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, and Justin Fargas, the three QB tandem of Jamarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski, and Rhett Bomar was abysmal. Russell started the first 3 games, throwing 2 td's and 2 interceptions, before he was injured and lost starting job for the year to Gradkowski. Russell still played in all 13 remaining games and threw 1 more touchdown and 2 picks. Gradkowski threw 16 touchdowns and 17 picks for the season. Bomar had 2 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in spot time. First round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey had 19 drops and only 4 touchdown receptions in 12 starts.
Heimerdinger led Chris Johnson and Vince Young to breakout years this season and the Titans offense carried the team to a 12-4 season and second place in the AFC South. Heimerdinger has been an integral piece in developing many good Quarter Backs and Running Backs in the NFL.

Turner, Rivera named Offensive and Defensive Coordinator of Raiders

After a big turnover in which all of the Charger's coaches were released, former Head Coach Norv Turner and his defensive coordinator have been hired by Eli Johnson an the "new" Oakland Raiders, Rivera as Defensive coordinator and Turner as Offensive coordinator, hired in part to help with the development of QB Jamarcus Russell. Said Johnson in a statement today "Coaches Turner and Rivera are great football minds and teachers who will greatly improve the mindset and ability of the young, new Raiders team we are putting together right now. We are excited to add these new, successful coaches to our staff with their skill and experience in the Division. In other news, Colts K Matt Stover has returned from retirement and will be playing for the Colts next year.

Raiders Sign Jason Taylor to help D-Line

After free agency started recently, the Raiders started revamping their team after only retaining one of their major Free Agents, Chaz Schilens, and they started with13-year vet Jason Taylor, former Dolphins sack master. Taylor will be moved from the OLB position he played in Miami's 3-4, to DE in the Raiders new defensive scheme, allowing for Shaun Ellis to move to defensive tackle, a position Ron Rivera seems to like him at. Raiders have also signed Linebackers Geno Hayes and Cameron Wake, and Cornerbacks Richard Marshall and Elbert Mack to bolster their defense. After releasing K Sebastian Janikowski, the Raiders signed Dan Carpenter, 2nd year pro with nice potential. They also signed Deon Anderson, a good receiving FB and Davone Bess from Miami and Shawn Murphy, solid 3rd year Guard.

Raiders Draft Davis, Hines in first round

Raiders No. 2 Overall pick LT Julian Davis looks remarkably like Jamarcus Russell
Raiders had 2 first round picks this year, as a result of their Mega trade with the Bills for Richard Seymour, which included and 1st and 2nd round pick and DE Aaron Maybin(20.5 sacks), and with their first round pick passed on one of the classes top quarterbacks and picked Julian Davis, a Left Tackle who will protect Jamarcus Russell(or whoever)'s blind side for years to come. With a pick they acquired in a first round swap with the Bengals, they selected Derrick Hines, WR from LSU, who looks to be buried in the Raider's deep receiving corps that has average skill but lacks star talent.
