Jets acknowledge Marty Schottenheimer with the Game Ball

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets coach Rex Ryan sent a game ball to Marty Schottenheimer after last weekend's playoff upset of the San Diego Chargers, the team that fired the father of New York's offensive coordinator following a 14-2 regular season.

Brian Schottenheimer said he was touched when he learned of his boss' gesture Tuesday -- and joked that it didn't even occur to him to do it.

Marty Schottenheimer was fired in February 2007 after the Chargers lost their first playoff game despite having the NFL's best record that season. He had 35 wins and two AFC West titles in his last three seasons in San Diego, where his son was quarterbacks coach from 2002 to 2005.

"It felt nice to pick up the phone after the game and talk to my father," Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday.

After Sunday's 17-14 win, the son has a chance to do something his famous father never did as a head coach: reach the Super Bowl. The Jets play Sunday in the AFC championship game at Indianapolis.

Marty Schottenheimer is coaching college players this week at the East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla.

I'm not mad, I just experienced the annoyingness of Jets fans first hand. I hope I never have to hear "Ya baby!" in a NY accent ever again. Ugh...

Jets and Giants fans, do rub people the wrong way when they come to our place, even when they are losing. Just the way they are I guess.

New York fans are just a different breed. It is what it is.

Not to the press, not every week. Never once have I heard Rivers boast in public like Ryan.

Anyways like BK said, Phillip might talk trash on the field but you don't hear him saying anything negative to the press about the loss or gloating when they were on an 11 game winning streak.

I think it's funny as hell , and that his attitude is what's made the Jets successful. If Norv Turner knew how do anything other than part his hair perfect at playoff time , they'd have won.

I can't believe this guy is back. He is NOT an improvement over Schottenheimer. He's a good OC though. He doesn't have the toughness or demeanor to lead an entire football team, just the brains to draw up some plays.

I would LOVE Rex Ryan here in Seattle. I'm glad the Jets hired him. That swagger is awesome and he's backin it up. And I love he's not afraid to call out AJ Smith, that to me is awesome.
