Yea...it has got me interested. The achievement list looks pretty fun (win a race without using a tear-off etc) and the potential is there for alot of good online racing.

The graphics don't look like they've evolved much from the PS2 version, but the track list looks good and if the gameplay is there, it'll be a nice pick-up for $20.

It's in my GameFly queue ready to replace DiRT2 as soon as I finish the last few challenges.

I loved the PS2 version and was one reason I held onto my PS2 for as long as I did. Was pretty excited to find out that they were finally bringing it to next gen. Like randogu said it doesnt look like the graphics really made an improvement but what can you expect for a low budget game. For $20 I might have to pick it up...

Looks like that is the case, as the THQ website and Gamefly both have XbX360 listings for the game, but no PS3 listing.

I'm giving away a few copies at www.thesportsgamer.com, good chance to pick up a copy if your just curious about it. I, for one, am pretty excited for it as I did enjoy the 2002 Ratbag release. I'm hoping to get in some multiplayer games tuesday and wednesday if any of you are up for it.

I read somewhere that the track will degrade over the course of a race......if it works like mx vs atv this year it will kick ***.

Here are some early impressions from one of the gamers at our site (thank you to FlexUSMC for allowing me to post it):

Ok guys...initial impressions are as follows:

Tuning Options seem to be good. Here is a brief list of tuning choices:

Stagger (size of right rear wheel)
Tire Type (compound)
RR Spacing (Right Rear spacing from the Chassis)
Ride Height
Torsion Bar
Shock Type (pressure for all 4 tires)
Gear Ratio
Weight Jacking
Tire Pressure
Wing Adjustment

FYI, I havent messed with these yet, so I dont know how much they affect the car)


There are 12 tracks....which is decent I suppose, though I was hoping for more like 15. Only tried 3 of them so far. The graphics are as you would expect a $20 games graphics to be. But honestly, once the car is moving, there is waaaay too much going on to even notice graphics. You can see depressions in the dirt that you left from previous laps, which is cool of course.

Now, the most important thing IMO.....Handling

@ first, I thought....this is sh!t. But when I started to get the idea of how to properly drive one of these cars, I realized I was the one who was sh!t
The handling is actually pretty nice, and the feedback is aboot what I'd Expect from a car like this (though I have never driven one)
I really have to run some more laps to be sure, but it feels really good to me, and Im using the wheel as most of you know, for those wondering how I played it.

Initial Impression: Well worth $20

Some additional comments (thanks again, Flex):

a couple of things I forgot to mention.....

-No option to adjust wheel settings
-Background music is cool....nothing that makes me wanna smash my head open with a hammer. Just instrumental stuff. Seems suitable for the game genre.
-Menus are simple, but useful.
-And I don't recommend getting on the track with ANYONE until youve practiced alone first, because they will flat run your *** over I learned this the hard way....while simultaneously taking out the entire field These cars are extremely difficult to drive, but once I got the feel of it down, I knew what I had to do to get some decent laps......just havent been able to do it yet
-Theres not really a practice mode, but you can change the amount of opponents to allow for just you on the track. As I said above, this is HIGHLY recommended

It uses the same engine as the older World of Outlaws game, and not the one from last year's PS2 Road to Eldora or whatever it was. I had that one too, and originally reviewed WoO for this site when it released. It's still one of the best console racers of all time IMO.

I wasn't expecting much from this one, and it's really exceeded what little expectations I had for it. For one, it's not using the "old" Ratbag engine like the PS2 games (other than Ratbag's actual WoO game) did. Those were based off of the older Dirt Track Racing and DTR Sprint Cars engines, not the ground-up engine that WoO used.

This one is much closer to WoO than the other games, as you can get wheel stands coming out of corners and really use the cushion to push your way around the track.

I'll get the bad things out of the way first (or some things that may be perceived as bad).

• There are no setups online. None. You're all set to fixed default setups, and they're pretty much crap. It makes the game unnecessarily difficult for rookies, because the cars are sloppier than gorilla snot on the default settings. You can move the wing forward and back with the bumpers, but it's not going to have much of an impact. You MUST learn to use the throttle to steer instead of the sticks, which takes getting used to.

What I mean is a sprinter has a strong LF brake but not much else. By stabbing the brake you can pitch the car into the corner and then you'll have to use very judicious throttle to control it. I see a lot of guys out there just balls-out squeezing the throttle like madmen, and while it's fun slinging mud everywhere, in one of the first races I had there were only 6 guys--I ended up winning it at 15 laps and 2nd place was -7 laps. That was a room full of first-timers, apparently, but you'll be dodging a LOT of cars until you learn to measure your throttle application and not just try to hot dog it.

• Career mode is here, consisting of 40 events (regular race nights, special events like timing challenges and whatnot), but it's locked at a ridiculously low difficulty and there are no options to change it. Very first career Heat I lapped the entire field, and in the 30-lap feature I lapped them 4 times. That's absurd. You'll have almost no difficulty in the career mode, but since all you do is unlock appearance items and buy upgrades for a car that will already decimate the CPU, there's no real push to do it. It will carry over to your online vehicle, though. So if you want a car that stands out, you'll have to put in the time in career mode.

• Career mode also has a locked set of assists, so the car is much much easier to drive in career mode (and also very strange--almost too grippy and twitchy), so it ends up as a decent training utility for hopping online, but once you hop online you pretty much have to learn it all over again with a much looser and more powerful race car.

Now, for the good.

• Handling. It's really, really fun. You'll find out just how good it is when you come off the corner at Silver Dollar and try to stand on the throttle, only to pick both front wheels up and go nose first into the grandstand fence. Once you figure out how to drive them, you'll have a glorious time making subtle changes with brake and gas to stabilize the car. Remember that getting the car as straight as possible, as quickly as possible, will make you fast. Not letting the *** end hang out near the fence, slinging mud all over the crowd.

• There isn't necessarily one "fast line" at most tracks. If you brake early and bottom feed like Danny Lasoski, you can sometimes come off the corner hot enough to take away the line from a guy running around the cushion. I went side by side with a guy online last night for what seemed like 7 laps. I'd beat him to the inside of the corner, but he'd carry more speed off, negating each other repeatedly.

• Arcade mode is where it's at. You can set the difficulty to Pro and damage to Simulation, and really have a hell of a time. My first race I only finished 13th, and the next one I spun out and ended up having to work through the field back to 9th. Arcade, oddly enough, is much more realistic than career.

• Online is really, really fun. That's the main selling point. It seems to be limited to single races though (and some other modes which seem to be silly--tag, hot spot and crap like that). It'd be nice to have a points tally tracked from race to race for a session, but as it stands, it's a hell of a good time online.

If there was EVER a game that was worth $20, this is it. I actually bought 2 and gave one to my brother, who spent a lot more time than me on the track at Silver Dollar himself.

Is there any customization of cars paint jobs or are they preset paint jobs like Ratbags were?
