A "whatif" history of modern baseball (1901-??) - ootp10
The story behind the what if scenario:
"After a bitter contract dispute with Giants' owner Andrew Freedman, Rusie responded by publicly thumbing his nose at Mr. Freeman, which was the 19th century variant of the middle finger. He was fined $200 (he made only $2,500). Rusie refused to play until Freedman returned his money and ended up holding out for the entire 1896 season. It was a fiasco for baseball; fans boycotted and the press railed against the owners. Owners implored Rusie and Freedman to compromise; neither would budge. The holdout was finally settled just prior to the 1897 season, as the owners collaborated for recoupment of the garnished wages, as well as a $5,000 settlement. This was partially out of respect for Mr. Rusie. However, the primary motivator was the threat of legal action against the reserve clause had his case gone to court."**** (****NOTE: Taken from Wikipedia.com) What if the trial went to court and the reserve clause was abolished because Amos Rusie won his case against the Andrew Freedman??? That is the scenario for this walk, or run, through baseball history. The year is 1901 and a new era in baseball has begun. Free agency is among us as the reserve clause was abolished thanks to the court case won by Amos Rusie against New York Giants' owner Andrew Freedman and the rest of the National League. A Second Major League Is Born
In 1901, Ban Johnson, with the consent of the team owners, withdrew from the National Agreement and announced plans to operate independently as a second major league. The National League owners welcomed their rivals, the American League, with open arms after an agreement has been reached between the leaders of each league. They will abide by all rules and regulations, including the new free agency rules as brought about by the Rusie case. Here are the list of the teams: Baltimore Orioles Boston Americans Chicago White Stockings Cleveland Blues Detroit Tigers Milwaukee Brewers Philadelphia Athletics Washington Senators The winner of the American League will face the winner of the National League in a best of 9 series. This will be known as the World Series. |
1901 - Year In Review
When the American League's first season opened, each team found itself stocked with added talent from the older league. Probably the brightest star in the first year was Nap Lajoie, second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, who copped the first AL batting title after jumping over from the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition to hitting an MLB leading .383, Lajoie also drove in 64 runs and hit 13 home runs to capture the AL's Outstanding Hitter Award. The Athletics also previewed one of their finds in 25-year old Eddie Plank, a 17-game winner fresh out of of college. These two players, however, were not able to keep the team out of the basement of the junior circuit. Jimmy Collins jumped from the Boston NL team to star for the AL's Boston team and led the majors in RBI with 102. He also gloated on the arm of his leading pitcher, Cy Young, who came over from St.Louis. Young, an 11-year NL veteran, recorded 21 victories, an ERA of 2.02 and 156 strikeouts, good for the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award. These players, along with slugging first baseman Buck Freeman (.343-13-88), led the Americans to the first AL title. The new Chicago club finished in second place and got double duty out of Clark Griffith, who managed the club and won 18 games. He and fellow pitcher Nixey Callahan, who won an MLB leading 24 games, led the was for the Pale Hose. John McGraw played third base and managed the Baltimore to a third place finish with a team which included veteran catcher Wilbert Robinson, young catcher Roger Bresnahan, Jimmy Williams (92 RBI) and star pitcher Joe "Ironman" McGinnity, who led the team with 16 wins.
While the American League was playing its first major league schedule, the established National League ad finished its 25th campaign. On the field, the East Coast teams were more severely hurt by the raids during the winter of 1900-01 than the western teams. St.Louis attained the lead at the beginning of August then fought off a challenge the rest of the way by Brooklyn to eventually clinch the NL title with only a half a week remaining. Two shining lights for the Cardinals were Emmet "Snags" Heidrick (10 HR, 90 RBI) and 20-game winner Jack Powell. The second place Brooklyn Superbas were led by hitter Tom Daly, who was second in the NL in RBI (88), and 21-game winner Jay Hughes. The third place Philadelphia Phillies were hurt by the loss of Lajoie to the upstart American League but still packed dynamite in the bats of Ed Delahanty and Elmer Flick. They also had the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner Doc White (22 wins, 2.16 ERA), who was also the NL's Rookie of the Year. The first World Series was an extremely fought battle between the Americans and the Cardinals. Jack Powell outlasted Cy Young in a 14-inning opening game, 3-2, then Ted Lewis outpitched Jack Harper in game 2, 4-3, to even the series. Pitching continued to dominate the series as the Americans scratched a run in the bottom of the 8th to give Fred Mitchell the win, 3-2, in game 3 but Mike O'Neill hurled a 4-hit shutout in game 4 to make it 2 games apiece. Cy Young came back in game 5 to lead Boston to an 8-2 win but Jack Harper then shut out the Americans, 5-0, to even the series. Back in Boston, Fred Mitchell won his second game of the series, besting Ed Murphy 2-1, then George Winter, the AL's Rookie of the Year, came back in game 8 after a heartbroken 1-0 loss in game 4 to outduel Mike O'Neill, 4-3, to give the Americans the first world's championship.
