ESPN's 30 for 30: Straight Outta L.A.
Premieres Tuesday May 11 8PM ESPN
In 1982, Raiders owner Al Davis beat the NFL in court and moved his team from Oakland to Los Angeles. With a squad as colorful as its owner, the Raiders captivated a large number of black and Hispanic fans in L.A. at a time when gang warfare, immigration and the real estate boom were rapidly changing the city. The L.A. Raiders morphed into a worldwide brand as the team's colors, swagger and anti-establishment ethos became linked with the hip-hop scene that was permeating South Central Los Angeles. Rapper-turned-filmmaker Ice Cube was not only witness to this evolution, he was also a part of it. As a member of the notorious rap group N.W.A, Ice Cube helped make the silver and black culturally significant to a new generation and demographic. Still a die-hard Raiders fan, Cube will explore the unlikely marriage between the NFL's rebel franchise and America's glamour city and show how pro football's outlaw team became the toast of La La Land.Tags: None -

One of the things I love in this 30 for 30 series is the different styles the directors use in each of their film. I can't wait to see how Ice Cube goes with this movie. I am also interested in the story itself. Being a Hurricanes fan, I do appreciate the "bad boy" teams so I would probably enjoy this one as well.Comment

Re: ESPN's 30 for 30: Straight Outta L.A.
I wish he would have interviewed me as a Steeler fan going into hostile environment as the Mosleum(sp). I remembered going to steeler vs. raider games, with my raider friends who protected me when I taunted them. I would never wear black and gold, just black so they thought I was a raider fan. My taunts were of the variety of reverse psychology. When Merril Hoge would score I would jump up and say "damn how could they let him score, this suck" laughing on the inside knowing that my boys knew what I was doing but the rabid killers and I mean killers would be chiming in saying the same thing I was saying. This was long before LAPD would eventually become a staple in the stadium. Bubby Brister, Mark Malone, Louis Lipps, Walter Albercrombie damn those were days.
Damn in those stands watching the beat downs was crazy, it was the pre cursor to that xbox game 1 vs 100. You would have to be either the baddest man on the planet or a complete idiot to cheer for the other team, it was an intimidating place and I never entered without my frienimes.Last edited by backbreaker; 05-03-2010, 12:55 PM.Comment

And that's why I will steer clear of certain states if I ever go to road games away from Florida/Georgia. Fans in Pennsylvania, New Jerseyork, Massachusetts, have bad reps for a reason.Comment
