We're not done yet: A New England Patriots Franchise.

Game: Madden 11
System: Xbox 360
Roster: 1st Roster Update, with a few minor tweaks
Difficulty: Custom
Sliders: Custom made me me, have been tested to my play style, will be edited if need be
Quarter Length: 12 minutes
Accelerated Clock: 24 secs
Injuries: 40
Fatigue: 57
Defense: 3-4

*I will be traveling to Raleigh, NC on August 25th for a Pro Halo 3 event, and will not return until September 1st. The Franchise will continue once I return, and I hope to get two seasons done by the time Halo Reach comes out, because once it does this Franchise will die.

Tribulations of Training Camp

5 Stories to watch for this Preseason.

-
The Logan Mankins Saga:

Patriots All-Pro LG Logan Mankins has held out all of training camp demanding a new contract similar to that of Saints LG Jahri Evans, with no resolution in site it looks like Mankins will be traded before the start of the regular season, but where?

-Training Camp Injuries:

The Patriots received a hit to an already thin DE corps when it was announced Ty Warren, who was been a mainstay at the Patriots LDE position would miss the season to have hip surgery. Free agent adition Gerrad Warren looks to be the replacement for Ty, with youngsters Myron Pryor and Darryl Richard breathing down his neck. Offensive lineman Nick Kazur also went down with what has been called a serious back injruy. Kazur was slated to start at the LG position vacated by Logan Mankins. George Bussey and Roch Ohrnberger are the only other players remaining on the roster to fill in, and both are unknowns.

-Revolving door at OLB:

There hasn't been a consistent pass rush in New England since back when Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel were wrecking havok on opposing offensive lines. Tuly Banta-Cain has one spot locked down, after his 10 sack season last year. Veteran Derrick Burgess will compete with rookie Jermaine Cunningham, Rob Ninkovitch for the other spot.

-All these Rookies man!:

As it seems right now, every player drafted by the Patriots in this years draft minus 7th round QB Zach Robinson have very good chances to make immediate impacts on the team. 1st round pick Devin McCourty will get a lot of looks on the 1st team defense. TE's Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are both battling for starting spots with veteran Alge Crumpler. ILB Brandon Spikes looks to be the "thumper" in the middle this team has been missing since Ted Johnson retired. And his playing mate at Florida OLB Jermaine Cunningham is penciled in to battle it out with veteran Derrick Burgess to start at OLB.

Rookie lineman George Bussey and Ted Larsen could both fill the LG position vacted by Logan Mankins. And Darryl Richard and Kade Weston will both compete for starting spots at DE. And last but not least 5th round pick punter Zoltan Mesko (Space emperor of space) should start opening day, and give the Pats a good punter for the first time in ages.

-To be, or not to be?

RB Lawrence Maroney has had an up and down career as a Patriot, and is now entering the last year of his rookie contract hoping for an extension. Will he finally show up this year, or will he join the likes of Chad Jackson and Ben Watson of failed Patriot picks?

I won't be playing my preseason games, instead I'll be simming them and re-adjusting the depth chart before every game so all players in position battles will get an equal opportunity to win the starting job.

Preseason Recap

Week One:

Patriots Vs. Saints
(W 30-0)

Week Two:

Patriots @ Falcons
(T 21-21)

Week Three:

Patriots @ Rams
(W 34-23)

Week Four:

Patriots vs. Giants
(L 35-34)

-Position Battle Winners:

3rd WR:

Both players had very impressive preseasons, but Julian Edleman barley edged out Brandon Tate. Edleman amassed 9 receptions for 153 yards along with four touchdowns, compared to Tate's 10 receptions for 55 yards and only one touchdown. Edleman showed to be far more explosive then Tate and for this reason he won the spot.

TE:

Rob Gronkowski edged out fellow rookie TE Aaron Hernandez. Gronk hauled in 7 passes for 74 yards and three touchdowns, while Hernandez caught 10 passes for only 62 yards and no touchdowns. Veteran Alge Crumpler will be used more as a 6th lineman, as he only caught 3 passes for 29 yards.

LG:

George Bussey had a very impressive preseason, not allowing a singe sack despite his 2 starts. Bussey easily edged out 2nd year player Rich Ohrnberger and veteran Dan Connolly who looked very sloppy when given playing time.

DE:

Veterans Gerard Warren and Damione Lewis turned in identical stats with 6 tackles, 2 for losses and one sack earning then a pair of starting positions. The youngsters Myron Pryor and Darryl Richard looked good, but were also very inconsistent, while veteran Mike Wright looks to be a situational pass rusher per usual, amassing 2 sacks.

MLB:

Brandon Spikes perhaps had the most impressive preseason of any Patriot, Spikes was tied for second on the team in tackles with fellow Gator Jermaine Cunningham with 18 (Both trailed Jerod Mayo's 25) Spikes also had 6 tackles for losses with 1.5 sacks and an interception. Gary Guyton and Tyrone McKenzie got equal playing compared to Spikes, but their numbers were not nearly as impressive.

OLB:

If this preseason was any indecation of things to come, Jermaine Cunningham is going to be a star, as previously stated the rookie was tied for second on the team with 18 tackles and 7 assists, this along with 3 for losses and 2.5 sacks which lead the team. Cunninghan also recovered a fumble that he brought back 14 yards for a touchdown. Veteran Derrick Burgess played well recording 8 tackles and a sack while Rob Ninkovich had 9 tackles and nothing else.

SS:

In perhaps the closest battle of all veteran Brandon McGowan edged out second year player Pat Chung on experience alone. Both put up nearly identical numbers, with McGowan looking better in the passing game, and Chung better against the run. McGowan had 9 tackles and 6 assists along with an interception. Chung on the other hand had 8 tackles and 4 assists, 3 of which being for losses, along with a sack. Chung is the future for the Patriots at SS, and will probably take over mid season but for now the job goes to the veteran McGowan.

Re: We're not done yet: A New England Patriots Franchise.

Logan Mankins Traded to Raiders

Friday, September 9th, 2010.

In a move very similar to last years, LG Logan Mankins has been traded to the Oakland Raiders form the New England Patriots for a 1st and 3rd Round picks. The deal shows a striking similarity to last years Richard Seymour deal. Seymour was also traded from New England to Oakland the week before the regular season start.
Mankins had held out all of training camp and preseason, and had been looking for a new deal or to be traded. Mankins is expected to receive a long term deal from Oakland before the start of the regular season.

*This deal was made because the Patriots have Oakland's 1st round pick this year, along with an extra 3rd*

Re: We're not done yet: A New England Patriots Franchise.

Week One Preview

New England will be opening up against a team with WR Terrel Owens on the starting roster for the second year in a row, as last year they opened up against the Buffalo Bills. The Cincinatti offense will be a good test for the young New England defense will try and figure a way to deal with star players Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, Cedric Benson, and of course Terrel Owens. If New England wants to win this game they're going to need to win a few key battles.

Leigh Bodden, Darius Butler, and Devin McCourty vs Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, and Antonio Bryant.

The Bengals have one of the most talented WR corps in the NFL, and they will certainly put a young New England secondary to a test. All three provide matchup problems for the Patriots corners, and shutting them down is a must if they want to win.

Randy Moss vs Jonathan Joseph

Joseph is one of the most talented young corners in the leauge and will certainly put veteran WR Randy Moss to a test. Moss has made a career of making corners look silly, will Joseph be just another victim? Or one of the few who actually holds his own against the future Hall of Famer.

Cedric Benson vs Jerod Mayo

After a disapointing few years in Chicago, Benson was signed by the Bengals and showed Chicago it was a mistake to release the former 1st round pick afrer rushing for 1251 yards last season. Benson will have to watch out for former rookie of the year Jerod Mayo, who enters this season fully healthy, and ready to show he is of the league's elite.

Prediction

New England 34
Cincinnati 24

New England simply has to many weapons for the Cincinatti defense to keep up with, and despite being very talented on offense the Bengals will not be able to keep up with Tom Brady and the Patriots, giving them their first defeat of the season.
