NEW NHL RULES
with the addition of the new nhl powerplay rule of not being able to freely ice the puck shorthanded without a whistle and enforcing of icing, will we see this patched into the game? we need to let the devs know. my source is last night's episode of nhl on the fly from nhl network. discuss

Re: NEW NHL RULES
Those were only "proposed" changes and were being tested... none may ever see the light of day even in the AHL. Although I do like the idea of 3 on 3 OT and the "hybrid" icing.Pittsburgh - 2009 City of Champions! YES WE DID! -
Re: NEW NHL RULES
Not being able to dump the puck on PP will never make it. It had been proposed in the past and was shot down by basically everyone but the people proposing it... The new OT format seems nice.. but kinda gimmicky... Hybrid icing is not solid enough.. they need to be all or nothing.. touch or no touch icing.. none of this, its up to the ref nonsence.. will just cause more problems.
Even tho its less exciting... for injury sake NHL should probably move to no touch icing.
Besides that, these rules would never make it to the NHL this season, even the AHL would be a far shot if I am not mistaken.Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
There arent any rule changes. They are just testing them out. There will not be any of these changes for the upcoming NHL season. Re: NEW NHL RULES
They talk about all sorts of goofy rule changes every year that never happen. A few years back they wanted to change the shape of the nets to where they would bow out on the sides and top to increase scoring.Go Sabres!Comment

There are no rule changes in NHL 11 besides tidying up a couple of cases where things didn't work quite right. Small changes were made for the following:with the addition of the new nhl powerplay rule of not being able to freely ice the puck shorthanded without a whistle and enforcing of icing, will we see this patched into the game? we need to let the devs know. my source is last night's episode of nhl on the fly from nhl network. discuss
-Correct offside calls where the player enters the zone before receiving the puck, gets the puck and carries it in behind him (should be offside, but wasn't before)
-Face-off positioning in a few cases, e.g. it is at center ice after the puck goes out of play in the neutral zone, it is outside the blueline if the team about the receive a power play ices the puck.
-Delayed penalty shots have been changed a bit to fix a few issues.
If the NHL does make any significant rule changes between now and the start of the season we would attempt to fix them with a patch, but at this point nothing is planned with respect to rules.Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
Awesome!! Ya know I did notice these on the demo but couldn't remember if they were in NHL10. Good to see the offside call fixed, I know I was both the victim and the beneficiary of this in the EASHL a few times. The change I noticed with the penalty shot is if the puck goes backwards the play is automatically blown dead, right? There are no rule changes in NHL 11 besides tidying up a couple of cases where things didn't work quite right. Re: NEW NHL RULES
That is one of the changes. It gives you time to finish a scoring chance, but you can't regroup and set up with the extra man. That isn't an official NHL rule, but the letter-of-the-law rule felt very wrong to most people since the attacking team rarely seems to recover the puck after a penalty shot infraction takes place.Awesome!! The other change is making sure that you get the penalty shot if the period expires. That should work now but there was an unconfirmed report that it can still happen so I'm not sure if that fix has a loophole or was subsequently broken by other changes somehow. I think it should work now and it is on the list of things to be retested (though the community will probably confirm it one way or the other for us before that happens). If it is broken it'll be patched.Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
Interesting proposals, but the icing on PPs would stretch the game out too long. Thats one thing the league is trying to avoid, so that will never happen. I like the 3 on 3 thing. I would propose going to that till you get a winner, which probably wouldnt take that long. Eliminate the shoot-out completely as its grown stale and has really taken the excitment out of the rare Penalty Shot.Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
Agreed, I also was intrigued by the idea of a power play being negated by a short-handed goal.. I'm not really sure how this would affect the league (other than lowering PP percentage and PP goals)Interesting proposals, but the icing on PPs would stretch the game out too long. Re: NEW NHL RULES
Great stuff, Redshirt, top notch attention to detail. Could you possibly give any info on how penalties being called has changed? Are there less calls for "Checking from behind" (usually never called)? Is this still tied in with Discipline and how does the new hitting system play a role? So far in the demo I haven't seen many penalties called at all, other than obvious tripping and interference ones called on me.

Also have you guys seen the glitch videos on youtube and plan to address them in some way?Pittsburgh - 2009 City of Champions! YES WE DID!Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
What's the deal with trying to speed up games to take up as little time as possible? I want the games to be an event. I want them to last a long time. Football games take 3-4 hours to finish, but the NFL isn't trying to figure out ways to speed up the game. Why would hockey fans want the games to finish in less time? It's almost as if the game is a nuisance to some people and they want to get games over with.
I say enjoy each game. They are supposed to be a fun event, not an inconvenience.
The only overtime change I would support is continuous overtime, which will never happen.
The game only needs very, very minor tweaks. No need to make a new sport.
They considered one faceoff dot in the center of each zone? I laughed when I read that. Also, changing faceoffs so the linesmen just put the puck down? These are really radical and are not necessary at all. They would not help the game.
Also, no thanks to no-touch icing or hybrid. I love it the way it is. Players can get injured going into the boards at any time during the game, not just for icing races.
The thing I love about hockey is it's a grind-it-out, tough sport. I don't want that to change.

Football is the great AMERICAN past time. Hockey is a huge Canadian game that has always been kind of a hard sell in the US, especially the TV contract.
American NFL fans would spend ALL weekend tailgating if they could, I'm sure (I would), and probably sit glued to the tube all Sunday watching two or three games!!!
The NHL would love to further penetrate the US "TV" market and that means as tight, fast and exciting hockey as can possibly be packaged for a US market in a managable TV show... ka-ching (for all teams)!!!
OK...now you can delete (or move) this post

Re: NEW NHL RULES
I just don't like how the NHL keeps trying to cater to non-hockey fans. I don't expect the NBA to change its rules just to make the game more exciting for me.
I know the league wants more fans and more money, but I think this is as good as it's going to get. The attendance and viewership is as good as it's going to get. By trying to get new fans they are going to lose real NHL fans, which basically cancels out the gain.My YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/gosjsharks14Comment

Re: NEW NHL RULES
I remember George Carlin's idea to make basketball more exciting.
Give 25 points for any shot that goes in off another player's head.
NHL should try something like that. 10 goals if the puck goes in off another player's face.
Nah, probably wouldn't work.Comment
