    Let's Talk Layups...

I'm playing all-star/sim, so that no doubt colors my view of this, but it seems that players are CONSTANTLY double-pumping their layups when they don't need to, and thus getting blocked waaaaay more than they should. Someone will have a clear shot at the basket, I'll press the shot stick right at it, and then for some reason, a defender will make body contact with them and they decide to go up soft and get blocked. This is super frustrating, especially after you watch the replay and see if they just went up strong, like a normal player would, they would have an easy layup.

Also...are other people missing the majority of their L2+layup moves, such as the spins, hop steps, and Eurosteps? It seems that even if I use it to properly avoid a defender, 90% of the time my guy will blow the open layup. This is also killing me right now, and destroying my shooting percentage.

Basically it seems like layups are more random this year, and I want to know how to cut down on that.

It's the sim setting. It increases the amount of contact lay ups you see

Nah, I miss most of my layups with Jordan in the challenges on Pro/Sim. I'm pretty sure he has a 99 layup rating.

I find that you need to do just RS layups and very rarely do the LT + RS fancier layups. Especially if you're using players that are not stars or great at finishing. Using the Knicks guards (Felton & Douglas) I use just the RS 99% of the time. I pretty much only use the LT for layups in transition. Even with MJ though, just use the RS and see the amazing stuff he pulls off and finishes.

Like you mentioned though, I initially missed a ton of LT + RS layups and any time there was contact the ball did not go in - literally 100% of the time. I haven't seen one yet with an average player. I get into trouble with Amare too sometimes when I try to dunk in traffic with RT + RS and get a contact layup animation instead. He misses those every single time as well so at least now I try to pass out of that animation every time.

I mentioned it in the impressions thread but you also get to the FT waaaaaaaay more using just RS for layups.

Its on the motion of the right stick move it arond as you do the layup in 2k10 it was just the trick of timing the release but in this one you have to move the stick around as your player does the animation and then stop at the same time they release the ball

Damn so it's really that accurate/refined?

So I have to hold the stick and release when they would, instead of just tapping the stick in the direction of the layup?

I really need to get my guys to stop double pumping and bringing the ball down low and instead just go up strong. Any tips here would also be appreciated.

                I seriously doubt this.

He's right you have to hold it to the point of whch you think the ball would be released.Just flickin it 90 percent of the time wont work unless your on a fastbreak.

I don't time the release of my layups and I make a majority of them using just the RS. I've got layups at 46.

My issue is when I choose a normal layup the cpu will often times choose the incorrect hand to shoot with in order to ensure a block. You can go strong to the hole and have your defender beat only to shoot essentially behind yourself and into the trailing defenders armpit.

Maybe it's because I play on broadcast cam but, when I try to pick which hand or which side of the basket I'm trying to lay it up on I too often end up doing an unnecessary degree of difficulty shot instead.

So Boot you would use up or down to decide your hand on broadcast I believe...

That happens to me too and I play with the 2k cam.

I'll drive baseline and press the right stick toward the basket to do a normal layup but I will do a behind the backboard layup and get blocked all the time.

I'm basically forced to use the x button.

I play on All-Star/Sim as well and I don't share the same gripe about layups, I think they're just fine...

Two things I want to highlight about layups (just from what I've noticed)

                              1. You should be using the shot stick when attempting a lay-up and you want to move the shot stick AWAY from the defender. Say you're going up for a layup and the defender is shading you towards the left, you want to move the shot stick to the right so that your player attempts a layup AWAY from the defender.

                              2. You have to hold the shot stick ALL THE WAY through the layup motion, you can't just tap it. Layups are like taking a shot, you need to release the shot stick at the top of your release.

I've got five guys on my team averaging over 50% shooting for the season. I think with a little practice and playing around with it, you'll get the hang of it.
