Player's Weight in NCAA 11
3 Attachment(s)
I got a copy of a prospect file from an online dynasty over at Gamingtailgate.com. I spent some time looking at it at work, I mean at home, and was very disappointed to see that player weight is completely random and not tied to the ratings at all. I think we all know that EA isn't using a real physics based engine and weight didn't matter. But I still thought that players abilities would be tied somewhat to their ratings. By that I assumed bigger running backs would be slower and stronger while smaller running backs would generally be quicker and faster. Not true at all. It simply is irrelevant.
I looked at OL as well. There is ZERO relationship between their weight and their strength or run and pass block ratings. You could have a road grading RT be 270 pounds and a nimble pass blocker that struggles in the run game be 330 pounds. I know there are always going to be unique players that don't fit a generic mold but there should definitely be some semblance of realism in a generated recruit's weight vs. his ratings. It would add more personality and realism if there was some correlation. To be fair, I didn't have numerical figure for the prospect file - just the letter grades so I don't know how they convert to numbers exactly. Maybe the pocket scout guys can chime in. But I did convert them to a number system and found that weight is 100% random. I'm proposing that they generate the ratings of the recruits and then calculate the weight of each recruit based on position and a handful of ratings. It would be a lot better. I've attached two pdf files that show the results of the weight by category for OL and RBs. I've also attached an Excel spreadsheet that I created to calculate a player's weight based on ratings and position. I did add a small random factor in to keep it somewhat unique but more realistic. As a player gets bigger and stronger over the dynasty maybe they could update the weight to show a player getting bigger as well. I hope EA can tie ratings to weight for NCAA 12. It's not hard. You can use these online spreadsheets as well: RB - https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...ObZIKIiA#gid=2 OL - https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...ObZIKIiA#gid=1 |

Re: Player's Weight in NCAA 11
I would love to be able to decide in the offseason what type of workouts my players would perform. And not just WR's, RB's, I'm talking about individual players.
It would help with getting players big enough for the NFL and in position transfers. Like say you recruit a moderately quick DE with good lower leg strength, he's 6'2 260 and you move him to DT and in his senior year he's NFL bound at 310. It could also help differentiate coaching philosophies and the importance of strength and conditioning coaches. Take the Jaguars for example, for a period of time (I think around '06-'08) they focused on having everyone gain as much raw strength as possible, everyone was to get as big as they could. They used heavy weights and got slower and many players suffered from joint and tendon injuries. They got Luke Richesson in 2009 and he completely changed the teams workout style. It was more about power and strength they could use, not just how much weight they could bench, squat or curl. These things should be in Madden and NCAA. |
Re: Player's Weight in NCAA 11
As for the idea you are purposing, it is a valid one. Players performance attributes are what matter, not their physical attributes. Height does help with jump balls, weight does help with taking up space, but it is not directly tied to players performance attributes.
Also if you want some valid class data (this is not dynasty exports which use grades, but there actual attribute data) check out the file below: http://www.pocketscout.site90.com/files/BigList.xlsx EDIT: I like the idea you bring up, but at the same time I do hope that if anything is implemented, that it is still done on a bell curve like the rest of the play attribute distribution. Most of the guys would fall right in line, but this way it would still leave open the chance of a freak like Brandon Jacobs to be generated. |
Re: Player's Weight in NCAA 11
I understand. I still want to have physical freaks - guys that are big but still quick and fast but weight still needs to make sense. Generally speaking a 180 pound RB should not be a power back and a 225 pound back should not be a quick and shifty guy that struggles to break tackles. I'd love to see weight be more relevant for defensive players so you can recruit guys specifically for 3-4 vs. 4-3. Right now a totally random aspect to the weight of recruits is just plain wrong imo.
Thanks for the info pocketscout. I'm going to change my number system to match your number for the grades although it will still say the same thing (with different base rates). I'll look at the big list file as well but I can only look at it at work since I don't have the new Office at home (I actually prefer Office 2000 to all the dumb sub menus of the newer one). |

Good thread and topic.
I generally agree with everything said. I'd like a bit more correlation. I wanna see fewer 5-10, 175 lb. power backs, for instance. Related to the halfback position, I'd like to see a few more small guys who can catch the ball out of the backfield. 3rd down back types. But at the same time, I still want to see the occasional total freak athlete who has it all. One thing I really want to see fixed next year is for the 40 time to blend the speed and acceleration together. |
