    My Gripe With NBA 2K11

I'm going to come out and say this right now - 2K11 is the best b-ball game I've ever played, and maybe the best sports game of this current generation of consoles. And while it plays an overall sensational game of b-ball, there's one thing about it that has recently irked me, and I felt the need to write about this.

2K11, overall as I mentioned, plays a great game. However, it needs to do one huge thing better next year if it's going to continue to improve, and it's a very fundamental thing. It's passing.

While I won't say the passing game is awful, it's not good, and it doesn't stack up to the rest of the gameplay. First and foremost, unless you drop the CPU's hands down, it's almost impossible to throw a pass downcourt for a fast break. More often then not, that pass gets deflected because the CPU has eyes in the back of their head in this game. While it can be addressed by the a**usting the 'Hands' slider in the gameplay menu, it seems like something that should work relatively well out of box, and it just doesn't. I played months of games with it on default sliders, and it just wasn't working for me. I was turning the ball over far too often on downcourt passes alone before I dropped the slider to 30. While it works a lot better, the CPU still deflects a lot of passes that it shouldn't.

And while this is a bit of an issue, it's nothing close to the biggest issue in the passing game. No, that belongs to the overall passing logic this game has. Suffice to say, it's garbage.

The horrible logic comes down to two things. The first thing I'll address is WHO it passes the ball to. More often than not, if you push the A button (this is the 360 version, obviously), the ball seems to go to the wrong person. I understand that there's a highlight under the person you're passing to, but when you're in the **** of the game, you can't rely on looking down on the court to see who the ball is going to. Far too often when I'm doing a dribble drive, the CPU will collapse on me, and instead of throwing to my open shooter, the game will pass to someone who's got a defensive player standing RIGHT in front of him, and just like that, turnover. It happens all the time in every situation - pick and roll, running a play, being double teamed in the post - no matter what situation might arise, it's happened. Because of this, I have to use the passing icons far too often in game, and again, it's a pain to have to do that to compensate poor passing AI. I shouldn't have to rely on that as often as I do.

My second gripe about passing could actually help address my first gripe about passing. It's the type of passing. The game just doesn't choose the right pass. When you need a bounce pass to the post, it throws a chest pass; when you need a lob pass over defenders to get it to you man that leaked downcourt for the break, it again, throws a chest pass. It's flat out annoying, and it causes me a lot of BS turnovers.

I think this can be addressed though, and I think the game would be MUCH better for it. With the default control scheme (shot stick), get rid of the shoot button (X), and move the fake pass button (B) elsewhere, and give me three different pass buttons. Put chest pass as the A button, bounce pass as the B button, and lob pass as the X button. Now, you choose the type of pass and when to use it, instead of hoping the AI makes the right pass.

While it might seem overwhelming at first to have to remember which button does what, I think it'd work and improve the passing game leaps and bounds over what it is now. No longer would you be able to blame the AI for making the wrong pass, now it would be all on the user. You have a guy leaking downcourt on the break for layup? Throw the lob pass. If you throw a chest pass and it gets deflected, it's your fault, not the AI's. You need a bounce pass for an entry pass in the post to prevent a deflection? Use that button. It's simple, and I think it would work great.

Obviously that does take away a couple of buttons on the default control scheme that others might use, but that can be addressed. First, if you're using the shot stick...why would you be using the X button to shoot anyways? That makes no sense. As far as the fake pass button, that can be mapped to the right stick pretty easily by coupling that with the LT modifier. Hold down the LT and flick the right stick in the direction that you want the fake pass to go to, and that'd work like a charm.

So, while my gripes might seem minimal to some, since the game plays so great everywhere else, I think if they were addressed in the way (or a similar way) that I mentioned, I think the game would be better off. It'd give the user more control over the pass game, and gone would be the days where you'd have to rely on AI to make the smart pass. If this could be done, I think 2K could manage to top 2K11 with 2K12.

I'd say it worked ok out of the box, but regardless, what sports game doesn't need a little tweaking to make more "Sim"?

I agree with the bounce pass gripe, but again I gotta disagree; The passing isn't that hard; I may have one or two passes a game that don't go to the intentional target. I never have trouble dribble-driving then kicking out to the open man. Sure the passing isn't as nice as that other game from '10, but it's not that bad and definitely better than 2k10's. (and don't complain about the passing icons, they are in the game for a reason)

I use shot stick a lot, but there's still times I like the x button. I do like your button passing idea, but I need that shot button lol, and then won't you still be complaing about the passes not going where intended?

Sorry not trying to flame/troll, just had to say my piece. By the way, I love that "****" is all asterisk'd out lol.

      Flaws:
      1. How do you throw these types of passes while using icon passing?
      2. Use icon passing to pass to the correct players.
      3. LT + right stick is already used for different layups and bank shots and stuff like that.
      4. If you can't make the pass down the court, it's because the passing lane isn't open. The man you want to throw too might be open, but there might be a guy right in front of u that can knock the pass away. Just don't make that pass. You can flat out dominate people (if you don't really want to play "sim") by just throwing full court passes the whole game for easy layups even with the so-called issue you brought up.

there's nothing wrong with passing.. if anything passing is way too easy because of the contact in the paint...

Are you holding turbo while passing in the post? Maybe that's why your not getting the tricky bounce passes.

              1. That's a great question, though if they fix the logic of the game, that's not something would have to be worried about. I'm sure you could use modifiers (i.e. LT) for the pass type.

              2. I do use icon passing, but I don't want to HAVE to use it every time down the court. The game should have the logic to throw to the open guy instead of to the guy who's man is fronting him.

              3. That's only in the post though, I don't how know how often you use the fake pass button in the post (I never use it in the post, and very rarely use it, actually).

              4. Not really true. There are a lot of times in the course of a game where a person who's back is to me will deflect the ball, and last I knew, people didn't have eyes in the back of their head. And honestly, when a person is ahead of the break, you don't see someone just beam the ball upcourt. 95% of the time, the person passing the ball upcourt will at least put some air underneath it, that way it can't be deflected so easily. But far too often, that just doesn't happen in this game. The player just chucks the ball upcourt and it gets deflected by a person who isn't even looking for the ball. It's annoying and completely obnoxious.

                1. LT is already used to pass it to the big man in Icon Passing.
                2. I think you're expecting too much if you expect the game to recognize that there's somebody near the person you're telling the game to pass to and then override the button you pressed and pass it to someone else instead.
                3. It's used at any part of the court really for up-and-unders, flick-flicks, hop steps, spinning layups, eurosteps, pumpfakes, etc.
                4. Again, I think it's a little much to expect the game to take into account where all of the players are on the court and decipher whether or not the player should throw a bounce pass down the length of the court or a lob, etc.

Re: My Gripe With NBA 2K11

No, passing is not "fine". It's serviceable and yes, you can be cheap with the passing if you're that inclined, but it's FAR from perfect. Especially in regard to the passing logic. The CPU chooses far too many bone headed passes.

Sometimes, a bounce pass that would make perfect sense gets picked off because the CPU decided to make a stupid chest pass. There are some occasions when you want to throw a bounce pass towards the side of the intended recipient, not a chest pass right at him, otherwise the ball might even hit the defender.

That is especially true when you're controlling the Center or the PF and you want to throw the ball back to the perimeter and reset the play. Why is my Center trying to make a straight chest pass instead of a lob or a bounce pass?! I want to either lob the ball towards half court so the defender can't reach it, or throw a quick bounce pass around the defender, not pass the ball straight at the opponent.

Also, during fast breaks, for what messed up reason can't I make a long pass and have the receiver chase the pass, instead of attempting some ugly, flat, chest pass that will inevitably get picked off? In real life, such passes go out of bounds a lot more often than they get picked off by the defense, because you're taught to lead the player on the break. Instead, in 2K11, many times the pass somehow ends up SHORT of the recipient and he has to regain control of it. No, I want that bad pass to go out of bounds instead, either because it was too long and inaccurate or the player I was passing to wasn't fast enough. Passes are rarely thrown too long in 2K11.

I also think that risky passes should go into the stands more often. No, I'm not talking about easy passes going out of bounds like what happens when you lower the pass accuracy slider too much. Lead passes and passes into the paint should be errant more frequently, so there would be more non-steal turnovers. It's not realistic for a team to get 20 steals in a game off stolen passes, and force only a couple of non-steal turnovers. Defensive pressure should cause more passes to go out of bounds instead. That would further discourage cheesing and make the game more realistic, because in real life, it's difficult to connect with a lead pass or a pass into the paint if you don't have a clear passing lane, and so you wind up throwing it out of bounds as you try to avoid the defender.

I would really like to see more intelligent passing also. There's countless moments where I drive with the intention of passing to my PF for a wide open layup or dunk but instead the pass gets sent to the still-guarded C or SG posted up 19 feet out with the Center's defender and his own defender between him and the ball. Foolishness that is understandably avoided by using the icon passing, but shouldn't HAVE to be. The difference between Steve Nash and Chris Duhon should be the likelihood of their ability to make the right decision -and the right pass - in these situations without having to resort to icon passing.

So you're asking the game to make you pass to the wrong people when you're using a bad PG and pass to the irght person when you use a good PG? So really it has nothing to do with what you actually want to do at that point. People need to just use icon passing because I'm thinking if 2K knew of a way to throw different kinds of passes and things like that without changing all of the controls, they probably would have. And honestly, I don't want to see 2K make it so the game automatically passes to the guy that's open. If you want to pass it to the open guy you have all the power to pass it to that guy under the current system.

I gotta agree the passing logic isn't what it could be. The basic part about what type of pass to give for a certain scenario isn't what it should be.

                            1. If your man has beat the cpu beat back down court and your pg throws a line drive pass that gets tipped should not be happening that often as it does. Basically you have no control over the type of passes that are made. I can see why 2K put it in the game to cut down on long passes but it comes across wrong.

                            2. Sometimes the passing it just too slow in terms of velocity and the height is too low.

I would rather not have to control the type of passes made and let the players ratings take that over. However it could be done with something like a long press for bullet and soft for lob type, not sure what would work for a bounce pass which is why I say it should be determined by the ratings.

Did you forget about the player movement? That's a bigger problem than the passing. Too many times I want to move to this particular spot on the court and my payer seems to keep doing circles around some invisible barrier. I can't believe how much this problem is getting overlooked in this game, and with that problem, this game cannot be the best sports game, or even basketball game, of all time.
