Looking for an Eastern Conference team
NOT named Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or Washington to run with in a new Be A GM I'm looking to start up. Ideally it would be a non-playoff team, but I'd take a look at the No. 6-8 seeds since there's not a ton of difference between those squads and some of the non-playoff teams.Currently Playing:

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
I say the the Canes. They've got the Caniacs (some of the best fans in the NHL), a Superstar in Staal, one of the best goalies in the league with Cam Ward, superstar rookie Jeff Skinner, and a team that needs some roster improvement in order to get to that next level. It would be a good challenge and they are only about 2 years away IMO at getting to that next level. I'm really surprised they didn't make the playoffs this year because of how good they normally are at the end of the year and in the playoffs.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
Whats wrong with them? I give those fans a lot of credit. There are three teams who I think have great fans in non traditional hockey markets.
1. San Jose Sharks (my second favorite team)
2. Carolina Hurricanes
3. Nashville Predators
These three teams have fans that show up to games regular season or playoffs. Although some of them don't understand the game of hockey fully I still give them a lot of credit. Some of them are actually pretty knowledgable when it comes to the sport. Who would have ever thought that the Hurricanes franchise would actually survive. The Carolina Panthers are barely making it, and Charlotte is on their second NBA team. The Canes are quite honestly the most popular franchise in NC. I guess it could be due to the fact that they are a fairly successful franchise.
Honestly I don't see why it's a huge joke. Hockey struggles to get fans to games in the regular season in areas where hockey isn't as big. When you see a place like Carolina, San Jose, and Nashville fill their building it makes me smile because it's a market where most people would have never thought a successful fan base would build up. It's not like MN, NY, Massachusetts, and Michigan where hockey is big (playing wise). We all are fortunate that in the Midwest and the East Coast that hockey is a popular sport. That means our franchises are going to be more successful with drawing fans. Don't say anything about the North Stars though. Places like the ones I mentioned above do not have big time places to play hockey. This is why I love those three franchises so much. They got their fans by working from the ground up. It all starts with work ethic, success, and character. Each one of those franchises has all of that and that is why they are successful. You should know that from the Sabres franchise. I absolutely love the Sabres and the way they go about their business. They are my 3rd favorite team. And no it's not just because of Ryan Miller like 3/4 of the United States. I can't wait to see what Terry Pegula does with that team. He's already off to a hell of a start with re-signing Lindy Ruff. That would have been a major mistake to let that man go. If he would have been gone I think the Wild would have snatched him up pretty quick.Last edited by bwiggy33; 05-02-2011, 02:23 AM.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
I've been slowly chugging along with my Tampa Bay Be A GM all season long. I'm been a fan for years, so I'm a bit biased, but there is plenty of talent to go around. Definitely a lot of fun to be had with TB if you're looking to switch things up.Now, more than everComment

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
it may appear full, but Carolina averaged only 87.5% attendance for home games. in fact, in 2006-2007, the year after they won the stanley cup, they averaged just 92.8%

ill give you the non-traditional market point. along with nashville and san jose, they have some of the best fans among southern, non-traditional teams. they do not compare to teams with real fan bases like minnesota, toronto, and calgary, who have bad teams but still consistently sell out games.will not change this until a buffalo team wins a championship.

I do like their alternate jerseys, so that's a plus. Carolina is a good call b/c I can rock the Whalers' jersey.Currently Playing:

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
Honestly I consider that pretty decent. There are a lot of teams who do way worse. Also that's pretty good attendance for a team who wasn't really all that great until the last 1/4 of the season. I still give those fans a lot of credit. They love their hockey regardless.it may appear full, but Carolina averaged only 87.5% attendance for home games. in fact, in 2006-2007, the year after they won the stanley cup, they averaged just 92.8%

It's really too bad the Sharks don't have a little bit higher seating capacity. They could fill at least a little over 18,000 almost every night, and even more for the playoffs. Thanks for the source. Pretty shocking to see St. Louis so high up in attendance with such a lacluster last half of the season. Pretty cool to see.NHL-Minnesota Wild

I vote for the Leafs.
No particular reason I guess. But gotta love the tradition, the fans sticking with them through all the lean years, their in a great division...and their unies are just plain cool.

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
He is probably just another bitter Buffalo fan. There are so many Buffalo fans that totally dislike the Carolina Hurricanes and everything about them, but that's okay.
It is true, though, that we have a very loyal fan base.
The people here that watch hockey are absolutely obsessed with it; almost as if no other sport exists in the state.

Yeah, Vikes, the Leafs do have some cool unis and the tradition is big.
It's either going to be Toronto, Carolina or Buffalo. I played a few games with the Bolts and they are fun to use, but I could see it being pretty easy to contend right out of the gate with them.Currently Playing:

Re: Looking for an Eastern Conference team
Are you playing every game or simming?
Of the three you mentioned, here's my opinions...
Toronto: Really like this. In NHL 10, I had a franchise with them where I played only the playoff games and had a blast. Great market...great, great fans...and haven't won a Cup in forever so when you win it, you feel like it's a huge deal. They also have some decent prospects in Kadri and Schenn. They also have two first rounders (Philadelphia and Boston), so you could definitely trade up or get a couple decent youngsters to add to the farm. Guys like Kessel, Grabo, and Phaneuf should be good to either build around or trade for youth/picks.
Carolina: I'm not sure why I've never really liked Carolina. Maybe, it's just jealousy that my Flyers haven't won the Cup in my lifetime and they won it so quickly after being formed. I respect their fans. Winning a Cup should usually create a hotbed even in non-traditional markets (but not always...ask Tampa). Some really excellent players who are in their primes or early 20's: Staal, Skinner, Pitkanen, Ward. They also have Ron Francis as their Director of Player Personnel and he's the man.
Buffalo: Honestly, I think this would be the easiest team to choose out of the three. You have arguably the best goalie in the game, along with a good prospect in Enroth to either groom or trade. You have the best young Defenseman and reigning Calder trophy winner in Tyler Myers (you'll have to definitely upgrade the Defense other than him, though). Then, you look at their offense...Vanek, Pominville and Roy are great top-6 forwards. Ennis and Gerbe are going to be really exciting players. Add to that the fact that Buffalo is one of the most passionate fanbases in the sport and they haven't won a Cup ever...not a bad team to pick.
Honestly, all three are teams that could easily be contenders for the top of the conference with some tweaking and some prospect growth. The most difficult teams in the East to turn around with the updated rosters are the Panthers and the Senators...both are brutal; either devoid of talent or their talent is aging and overpaid. If you want a significant challenge, go with one of them (especially Florida...seriously, just brutal). If we're only talking your three, then I like Buffalo or Toronto because of their history and tradition.
Hope this helps and HAVE FUN!Comment
