Ricky Stanzi
I don't watch much Big 10 football at all so i haven't seen Ricky Stanzi play much during his career at Iowa. Chiefs nabbed him in the 5th round and I wanted to get some thoughts on him from those of you who've seen some substantial film on him. Is he merely a developmental backup project or do you guys feel he can be solid (or better) NFL starter. Is he merely a game manager or will he will his team to victory? How does he deal with adversity....when the team is behind?Tags: None -

Re: Ricky Stanzi
Being from Iowa and a Hawkeye fan (even though I go to KU), I have watched him a lot. He started playing considerable time splitting starts with another QB sophomore year and he's just improved every year after. Finished his senior year at 64% comp. 25 TD's and only 6 picks. He's got the typical pro size and a little mobility, but more so a classic pocket passer and some real potential. He can get flustered at times tho and force passes, but when he's on... idk, its like he just picks his spots.
Personally, I think he could be a starter in a few years after learning from Cassel. Guy is a film nut and works hard from what I've read and heard. The summer prior to our Orange Bowl win, his daily routine was something like 4 hours of film a day, and then workouts.
Also, Mel Kiper on NFL Live said that he believes Ricky will have the best pro career out of all the QB's drafted. I about siht myself when he said it (I think Mallet will personally). Anyway, I'm excited he's a Chief though, and have been waiting for a big skill guy (QB) to get drafted from Iowa.
I also think he'll be a fan favorite by the end of the the season... maybe Cassel gets hurt and Stanzi the Manzi can show his stuff. Hopefully he doesn't completely suck.Last edited by sportzbro; 05-04-2011, 12:15 AM.Comment

Re: Ricky Stanzi
Rickey is my cousin believe it or not. I have never met him though. We figured out he is my 4th or 5th cousin. His aunt lives 3 houses down from my parents.
Im not trying to say hey look at me, What I really wanted to say is he is a class act. He made sure to take time off during school to come and see his other aunt when she was dying. Very classy kid from all accounts.Comment

Re: Ricky Stanzi
He has good athleticism and size, throws a decent deep ball (with the potential to improve), has run a pro-style offense for 3 years and has shown the willingness to put the time into the film room. Ricky Stanzi has the measurables - 6'4", 230, and is reasonably athletic. He's got a very high efficiency rating as well. He is a genuinely wonderful person (gives of his time to University Hospital and to those less fortunate than he). He is bright and very adept at giving the right answer in interviews.
But, as a fan, I am frequently driven to distraction by some of his inexplicably inaccurate throws. He has thrown beautiful long passes. But at times, he misses throws that would have been touchdowns. It is not just long throws, but also intermediate and short throws. Sometimes beautiful timing and touch and sometimes just misses open receivers.GT: Herkyalert

So you're saying he's the perfect replacement for Brodie Croyle then! But, as a fan, I am frequently driven to distraction by some of his inexplicably inaccurate throws. Re: Ricky Stanzi
If he continues to work hard he will develop into an nfl starter. There's a reason he drew so many comparisons to tom brady. I doubt its a coincidence that scott pioli drafted him with said comparisons being made by many experts. It was widely rumored that new england was very interested in him as well, although you can never put too much stock in rumors out of them. Personally I believe the chiefs got a steal in the fifth round.Comment

Re: Ricky Stanzi
I liked him in college watched a lot of him due to my mom and grandma being Iowa fans as well as LSU fans
I feel in a good pro style system with a bit of time to develop he can be a solid starter, I always liked his toughness. Especially in his Junior season he'd get roughed up or be terrible for 3 quarters then he comes out completely focused in the 4thSaints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: Ricky Stanzi
I remember reading a article on one of the Iowa message boards about how that really affected him and shook him up that season. He said his head wasn't in football that year and he didn't develop like he should have then.Rickey is my cousin believe it or not. I have never met him though. Re: Ricky Stanzi
I watched him some, playing against Ohio State, and some other BigTen opponents and always thought he was a quality quaterback. I would not be surprised to see him be a successful starter in a few years. I think he will have a better overall NFL career then some of the higher picks such as Cam Newton or Jake Locker. He has the athleticism, played in a good system at Iowa, has the size and the arm strength. The only flaw I see in his game at times is poor accuracy. He reminds me a lot of Tom Brady.Last edited by Buckeyes_Doc; 05-06-2011, 12:08 PM.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment
