    Dust 514 (PS3)

CCP revealed its MMO shooter Dust 514 at Sony's press conference yesterday, bringing ground combat to the EVE Online universe. What they didn't tell us is that it's a free-to-play game.

Idk why, but I am looking forward to this

PS3's Exclusive Dust 514 Is a Game Changer

After being introduced at E3 2011 and further explained and shown at Gamescom 2011, CCP's Dust 514 is still one of the greatest mysteries in gaming. A PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter that's intimately tied in with the PC-centric MMO EVE Online, Dust 514 is attempting to do something that's never been done before: tie together an existing game with an entirely different game on an alternate platform, and have the events of one become consequential to the other.

Recently, the PlayStation Blog sat down with Brandon Laurino, Dust 514's Executive Producer, and a lot of interesting information came out about what CCP is trying to do with its new, ambitious title. As Laurino explained to the PS Blog, the power of the PlayStation 3 made it an alluring destination for its new game, but that it was "Sony's willingness" to work with CCP on "bringing an MMO to the platform" that sold the company on the possibilities of Dust 514.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rKtYqWBR7h0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

"We're breaking so much ground with Dust 514," Laurino said. "We're not only building a full console MMO; we're bringing one that feeds into another MMO on a completely different platform. We're breaking more ground by bringing the microtransaction business model to a console shooter for the first time." But will Dust 514 be too deep for console gamers, especially as a complement to something as involved as EVE Online? "The common joke" with Dust 514 "is that you have to overcome a 'learning cliff' to get involved. Part of the thinking behind Dust 514," Laurino continued, "is to address those preconceptions; we accept that there is a barrier to entry with something as deep as EVE Online and we wanted to make it more accessible, providing another portal and dimension into the EVE universe."

Laurino concluded, "what's more accessible to a gamer in this day and age than a shooter?"

Unlike EVE Online, however, Dust 514 isn't a ship-to-ship space-borne MMO. All of those planets in the EVE universe are the ones where the action in Dust 514 will take place on the surface. According to Laurino, "[Dust 514] is a vehicular combat game on an extremely large scale, and then when you move into installations and outposts, it's more infantry based." Players will have plenty of customization through the Fitting System that EVE Online gamers are already familiar with, which will allow for an incredible number of character class and equipment permutations. And the scope of where the game takes place is intense. "We're not just talking a dozen maps," Laurino quipped, but rather thousands of separate planets.

The beginnings of a fierce firefight.
In EVE Online, you play as a "Capsuleer," the pilot of a spaceship, while you're a gun-toting mercenary in Dust 514. So how do the games fit more intimately together? Laurino explained the situation in-depth. "The EVE universe is comprised of three experiences: one is the classic EVE Online play, 'flying in space' or what we call FIS. There's WIS or 'walking in stations,' where you can now get out of your ship and explore the interiors of space stations. And the final piece is Dust 514 and we've nicknamed that SIF, or 'shooting in face.' None of those three are spin-offs, they're experiences of equal value that can be played independently or fully connected. If you're connected then you're going to get the rich emergent gameplay that runs through all three."

Dust 514 won't be out until well into 2012, and betas called Private Trials will preempt the game's release. But what should we take away from Dust 514 in the meantime, until we finally get to see more and get more hands-on time with it? Its scope and scale seems to be what's more important. "In terms of scale, depth and volume of content, Dust 514 will easily be the biggest multiplayer FPS on the market – also by virtue of being an MMOFPS, not just an FPS… it is the deepest shooter with the richest universe ever conceived and, on top of that, by bringing to market an MMO with microtransactions, we could be changing the face of console gaming forever."
This is ambitious if they can pull it off.

Dust 514 goes free-to-play, Vita version a 'companion app'

Dust 514, the upcoming PSN exclusive MMOFPS connected both figuratively and literally to the EVE Online universe, will launch with a $0.00 price tag, according to Eurogamer. Originally, the game was to launch at $20.00, and the player would be pseudo-reimbursed with $20.00 worth of in-game currency. "We wanted to make it unambiguously that this is a free-to-play game," CCP's Brandon Laurino told Eurogamer. "We probably will still have some kind of pack like that."

The game will still be supported through microtransactions, as was always the plan, although Laurino remains adamant that Dust 514 is "not a pay to win game," and that nothing available for purchase will provide an unfair advantage.

Dust 514's Vita iteration won't be exactly the same as the newly free-to-play PS3 version. Laurino told Eurogamer that the Vita game will be a "companion app," with functionality including character customization, shopping, and setting up "strategies" with other players, all interfacing with the PS3 game.

The Vita may get other exciting functions like "playing a video game" later, as the app will be progressively upgraded. "As we continue to explore what the possibilities are, between Vita and PS3, of which there are many, we'll keep updating the app with stuff like that over time," Laurino said. As for a launch simultaneous with the PS3 game, "We haven't decided that yet."

problem is I think it's real difficult to learn. Not sure if a lot of console gamers have the patience for it.

I played for a few hours last night, it's not bad at all, especially for free, I just need to learn how to do all the non-game play stuff. The worst part about the whole experience is the PS3 controllers, they suck big time, especially for FPS, the frickin thumb stick are too high/too far from the surface and it they don't have much resistance making them feel too loose and it's harder to aim because of it, and the controller is just too small in size. But the game ain't bad at all, once I learn how to play it, it should be really fun.

Bumping this old thread, not too many responses in it and I think the reason why has been suggested already in Eton Rifles post.

Either way, anyone have any suggestions before I start playing?

I really don't plan on spending any money on it so any pointers would be much appreciated.
