Let's talk about the Prestige Ratings in NCAA 12

Some of these are a bit absurd. Last time I checked:

6 stars: The elite programs that have years of tradition and a bunch of national championships.

5 stars: Some of the top schools in the past decade. May have even won a title or two in that span. Great schools, but not THE TOP.

4 stars: Respected teams that tend to be in the top 25 often but have had enough down years and inconsistencies in the past 10 years to keep them from being higher.

3 stars: Teams that find success once and awhile but struggle with consistency as they usually play second fiddle to larger in-state schools.

2 stars: Teams that traditionally dwell near the bottom of their division. Every couple of years they'll get a landmark win against an unsuspecting top 25 foe.

1 star: Bottom of the barrel. Very little has gone right for these teams.

Here's the list, by the way.

I have gripes with the following:

Auburn- Should be 5 stars. Yes, they just won the national championship but they do not have the history of winning the other 6-star schools have. Don't let my allegiance to the Tide fool you. I don't mind AU like most Bama fans. When you live up north it just doesn't bother you as much.

Oregon- Oregon has been great the past few seasons but they don't have the history or tradition of a 6-star program.

Iowa- 5 stars? WHAT? That is absurd. They're not on the same level as Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan, Miami, etc.

Wisconsin- Wisconsin always seems to quietly do well in the Big Ten as U of M and OSU get all the attention, but I don't consider them one of the premier programs in the country. This one, however, I have a weaker feeling about than the others.

Michigan- 5 stars. Hmm, I live in Michigan and have always hated the Wolverines but I have to say that they're still a 6-star program in my book. Yes, they've struggled a lot as of late but they're still Michigan. The same could be argued for Notre Dame. Again, this is another one that doesn't bother me too much.

FIU- These guys are moving up in the college football world. Last year they gave Texas A&M and Rutgers quite the battle. They even won a bowl game last year. Giving them that 2nd star would be justified.

Re: Let's talk about the Prestige Ratings in NCAA 12

Having looked over the list and then going back and studying what the prestige levels were last year, I'm suprised I haven't heard more of a gripe about this particular team.

UCLA: A traditional rival of USC and a team that is still able to bring in strong recruits (MJD, two kids selected in the 2nd round this year).
They dropped from a 4to a 2 star program in one year!!

I've never seen something like that before. Can anyone on here say that Air Force historically is a more prestigious program than UCLA? UCF, more prestigious? This is pretty much a joke.

Yea I know UCLA has fallen on hard times but they're still a 3-star school IMO. Hopefully USC has a downfall and UCLA gets some of their potential recruits. Also, I originally had Air Force on here as being too high.

I always thought Nebraska being a 5 star is kind of dumb. Should be a 6 star imo.

Wisconsin is usually a good team, the 5 star rating is actually alright.

scUM being dropped a star makes sense. They've got a lot of tradition, but recently they've sucked and they just went through a coaching change, etc.

I can see why you might not like the Iowa pick, they're kind of a tweener with 4 and 5. I mean, they're definitely bottom of the barrel of the 5s, but they're probably better than any of the 4s.

I agree about Auburn and Oregon, but I think they try to keep a certain number of 6 stars each year (10), and Auburn + Oregon are probably the most worthy of taking the spots of ND and scUM.

I actually think that the prestige ratings are mostly fair this year. Granted, a couple teams might be one out of place, but when you look at who is above / below it makes some sense - they have to draw the line somewhere I suppose.

The team ratings, on the other hand, I take issue with.

If Notre Dame and Michigan are 5*'s, then how are Oregon, Auburn and LSU a 6*? I know both they fallen on hard times but come on.

              Georgia a 5*?

              BYU and North Carolina 4*?

Everyone has their own idea what prestige means. Let people customize prestige ratings (and customize a school's different recruiting ratings).

Only way to resolve things outside of changing how they handle prestige overall.

Joe Pa alone makes them a 7*, the team itself drops them to a 6* lol.

The prestige ratings have been off for a while. Most of the 6 star teams are correct, but I agree, Auburn and Oregon should NOT be up there.

                      This is very true.

I think of it as how an offer from program A compares to program B. Recent performance is obviously a big part of that, and being a consistent powerhouse through the years (or sucking in the past) is the other half.

The past 5 years Iowa is 40-24. Certainly not 5-star worthy. Nor is their tradition.

Prestige is directly related to the quality of recruits that have interest in a program. IMO ND and UM should be still 6star programs. ND year in and year out is a top 10 to top 15 recruiting class and have a VERY rich history and the same with UM. Placing Oregon above both those programs is ridiculous.

I think prestige should be based off 3 factors.

                            1. History of Program (Championships/etc.)
                            2. Recent Team Record (5 or so Years)
                            3. Pro-Factory

                            In that order.

                            NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins

But what has that top 10 recruiting class gotten them? I think recruiting class ranks are blown so out of proportion. These guys haven't played college ball yet. Sure, you think they will, but it's not always the case. If prestige is directly related to recruiting [results] then I'd say what Miami has done over the years with recruiting should make them a 6*. How many draft picks did they create in the first part of the the 2000's? That's more than some produce in a decade or more. But I still think Miami is a 5* given the mediocrity since leaving the Big East. Same reasons why Michigan and ND are 5*'s. Notre Dame had that good BCS run in 2005-2006 with bad losses in the Fiesta and Sugar, but they have been up and then down up and then down otherwise. 6* programs have to be consistently good. 8, 9, 10+ wins yearly. 5 seasons of .500 or below football in 10 years doesn't cut it in my opinion.
