    Just Win Baby!

    Raiders Finally Fire Kiffin
    ESPN.com

The inevitable became reality Tuesday when Lane Kiffin was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. In a one-paragraph release, the team said, "Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of the Oakland Raiders for cause. "

"I reached a point where I felt that the whole staff were fractionalized, that the best thing to do to get this thing back was to make a change," Davis said during a lengthy news conference. "It hurts because I picked the guy. I picked the wrong guy."

Al Davis has not named Kiffin’s replacement yet, although he has let it be known that whoever takes over will inherit the existing coaching staff.

Offensive Line Coach Tom Cobble had this to say, "This is in many ways a strange day. I have a friend who lost a job. That's difficult in this business but, as we know, this is a business. It is time for us to move forward and to put the past behind us. ... We have a good coaching staff here and a good football team here."

The Raiders may have improved under Lane Kiffin -- but they were still among the dregs of the NFL.

The news did not blindside Kiffin, who was informed by a team executive that he would be fired at the end of the 2007 season. Even though Davis didn't act at the end of the 2007 season, as Kiffin was told, the firing came as no surprise.

"I know that I left this team a lot better than when we got here," Kiffin told ESPN's Chris Mortenson. "It was very painful for myself and my family," he said. "A lot of accusations were being made there. A lot of information was put up. A number of lies were very hurtful. It was tough to stomach for myself and my family. But it is what it is. We'll deal with it from here."

Davis hired Kiffin, who was USC's offensive coordinator at the time, as the NFL's youngest coach (at 31 years old) in February 2007. Even though many observers questioned the hiring, Kiffin ultimately gained respect around the league for fielding a significantly more competitive team than the Raiders had displayed before he was hired.

While Oakland was competitive in most of its games, Kiffin and Davis had a falling out on several fronts, starting when Davis believed Kiffin expressed private interest in the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas during the 2007 season.

However, it was well-documented that their relationship disintegrated when Kiffin attempted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. A source said Kiffin suggested to Davis that the owner had reneged on an agreement that the coach would have control over his own staff. Shortly thereafter, Davis sent a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, sources said. Kiffin declined.

Davis denied a report that Kiffin was sent a resignation letter in the past but refused to sign it. The owner said that Kiffin was responsible for getting that false claim into the media. On Tuesday, Davis was asked if Kiffin was trying to get fired so that he would receive the remainder of his salary.

"I don't know what he was doing, but he got me to fire him," Davis said.
Kiffin denied any attempt to get fired and said that he has lawyers looking into the Raiders' attempt to avoid paying the coach.

Kiffin had opposed some of Davis' big free-agent signings and draft choices. Kiffin also expressed public frustration that the team was not more aggressive in claiming other teams' released players via the waiver process to strengthen the bottom of the roster.

Breaking News: Unknown to Coach the Oakland Raiders

After a tumultuous off season, GM Al Davis has fired Head Coach Lane Kiffin. Owner and GM Al Davis shocked the NFL world by announcing the firing of Kiffin and his intention to hire a coaching unknown for the 7-9 Oakland Raiders.

A source inside the Raiders organization had this to say, “Al Davis is crazy!"

Coach Joslin comes from Oklahoma State University where he was an offensive assistant. When reached for comment, OSU Head Coach, Mike Gundy had this to say, "Really? This isn't some kind of joke?"

When pressed about his unorthodox decision, Davis had this to say, "As GM of the Raiders, I've built one of the most talented teams in the league. Talent isn't the problem, coaching is the problem!" "Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin all of those guys were idiots! They didn't know what to do with all the talent I brought in, they always wanted to fight me, they wanted their guys...but they didn't have any idea about what makes a good football player. I know! Mark my words JaMarcus Russell will be a Pro Bowl QB! This time around, I'm doing things right. I'll handle the GM side of things. I'll draft the players, I'll tell the coach who to re-sign, and who to trade for. I know talent, and I'll make sure we have the talent to win. Coach Joslin will focus on winning ball games." "I told him that, I told him, just win, baby...just win!"

It remains to be seen exactly how this will work out, but sources around the league speculate that Owner/GM Davis will have exclusive control on who to sign and who to cut. Coach Joslin will be responsible for putting together a Draft Board, but GM Davis will be the one picking the players. GM Davis will handle all the Training Camp Invites. Although some personnel people around the league believe that Davis will allow Coach Joslin some leeway when it comes to bringing in Free Agents and Camp Invites. A source within the Raiders organization, said Davis is planning on allowing Joslin $7M to sign free agents.

When reached for comment, Coach Joslin had this to say, "I'm excited by the opportunity to coach in the NFL. I feel confident that I will be able to work with Owner/GM Davis."

Sources close to Coach Joslin speculated off the record, that Joslin jumped at the chance to coach the Raiders. It's an NFL team, what coach doesn't want to coach at that level...even if it is for Al Davis.

Coaches around the league are skeptical that Coach Joslin is ready.

      House Rules

I'm hoping for a challenge, so I've put together some house rules. In tests, this has shown that every game is pretty hard fought. In sims, my team gets destroyed consistently...so there is an incentive to play the games.

*No Custom Plays, New offensive playbook, I've never used.

*Must call 15 different plays on offense and defense in a game.

*$7M cap on Free Agents, I'll try to stay away from the typical guys as well

*Coach sets Draft Board, GM makes selections, once again I'll try to stay away from the usual guys especially in 2008 Draft

*Limited scouting, basically I don’t want to reveal potentials or player comparisons to make drafting more challenging.

*No new Special Skills for HC, GM, or other coaches

*Performance Skill cap of 3 for HC

      Playbooks

Offense: Joslin Attack (based off Shottenheimer Attack, with some wishbone plays added)

Team Building: FA/Role- I'm going to be trying to build the team with select budget Free Agents and trades.
Playcall: Blitz Hvy, Man, HC, 46 (4-2-5 really), Aggressive, Hvy, HC, Vertical Passing
Depth Chart: Bench, Bench, Balanced, Balanced, Balanced
      Injury: Aggressive

(I basically kept the GM choices as Al likes them)

          Oakland Raiders

Owner/GM Al Davis has laid down the law, letting Coach Joslin know that he expects him to bring in a top flight on the Offensive Line (OVR 85 or better) LT, LG, and RG. Davis let Coach Joslin know that he doesn't care how he does it, trade for them, get them in free agency or draft them, just get them baby!

Offensive Line is definitely a good place to start, when rebuilding the Raiders as there isn't much talent there:

LT Mario Henderson 72/79 poor impact blocking, poor run blocking, poor pass blocking

LG Robert Gallery 75/75 good impact blocking, poor run blocking, avg pass blocking...big time bust, drafted to play tackle, but never could

C Jake Grove 73/74 good impact blocking, poor run blocking, poor pass blocking

RG Cooper Carlisle 73/73 good impact blocking, poor run blocking, poor pass blocking

RT Mark Wilson 86/89 good impact blocking, good run blocking, average pass blocking- the one bright spot on the OLine

Coach Joslin looked at the options in free agency, and found them to be unavailable or likely too expensive. So that leaves trading for them or drafting them.

Some guys they will check out are:

          LG Stacy Andrews

LG Ruben Brown (he's old, but he's got some skills if he's willing to play cheap)

C Jeff Faine (probably stay away just because he's a free agent I usually get.)

          C Dan Koppen

          RG Jake Scott

          RB Ben Noll

RG Jeb Terry (could be a bargain solution, won't be the star Al Davis wants, but a solid player.)

LT Torrin Tucker (I love this guy, but no one else seems to so if he's there, I'll get him)

          RT Max Starks

RT Damien Woody (move him back to C, the position he played in college)

          Other guys worth a look:

          OLB Karlos Dansby

          OLB Kawika Mitchell

          OLB Michael Boley

(would love a guy to pair with Thomas Howard)

FS Ken Hamlin (I usually go for Eugene Wilson, so if the price is right, I might take a flier on Hamlin.)

QB Daunte Culpepper or QB Byron Leftwich (odds are these guys are out of my price range...or will eat up my entire budget at one go.)

WR DJ Hackett (we need a #1 WR badly, and with me trying to stay away from my favorites in the draft...they could be hard to come by...but I have a feeling he's going to want more than I want to pay.)

            2008 Free Agency Part 1

Raiders make a deal with Dallas for MLB Akin Ayodele, sending the Cowboys their 4th round pick (101) and a 5th in 2009

DT Albert Haynesworth goes to the Tennessee Titans for $10M a year for 5 years.

CB Asante Samuael signs a 5yr deal worth approximately $40M with the Dolphins

OLB Lance Briggs agrees to a deal with the New Orlean Saints for $9.2M a year for 5 years

FS Eugene Wilson will be playing in San Francisco next year, making $4.0M a year for 5 years

LG Alan Faneca signs a 5yr deal with the Broncos for around $39M

Oakland sends one of their 7th round picks (198) to the Browns for backup QB Ken Dorsey

RT Jordan Gross agrees to a deal with the Broncos for $6.6M a year for 5 years.

Oakland Raiders sign FS Ken Hamlin to a 4yr $17M deal with a $2.5M signing bonus ($3.7M cap hit- so $3.3M left in the Free Agent Budget) Analysts predict that Hamlin may be moved to Strong Safety.

HB Shaun Alexander signs a $21M/4yr deal with Buccaneers.

LE Antwan Odom also goes the the Buccaneers for an estimated $30M over 4 years.

The Buffalo Bills sign CB Randall Gay to a $17.2M deal for 4yrs

The Falcons sign HB Michael Turner to a 4yr deal worth almost $18M

OLB Karlos Dansby signs a 4yr $21M deal with the Bengals

OLB Kawika Mitchell goes to the Eagles for $4.1M a year for 4yrs

The aged WR Isaac Bruce shows he can still command a decent salary going to the 49ers for $5.2M for 1 year

LG Stacy Andrews wants more than we have left in the budget to start with, he ends up going to the Carolina Panthers for a 5yr deal worth $26M and a $10M signing bonus

              Free Agency Part 2

CB Ty Law can't get any team to return his agents calls. When the Raiders inquired, Law was looking for a deal around $3.5M meaning he's out of our budget.

K Jason Elam signs a 2yr deal with the Giants for a reported $5M

K Rob Bironas goes to the Chiefs for $4.8M over 2 years

RG Jake Scott signs with the Broncos for $5M a year for 4 years...would of loved to get him, but too pricey.

RG Ben Noll while cheaper than Scott is still out of our range, he goes to the Texans for $4.3M a year for 4years

LG Ruben Brown is another budget buster, he ends up signing a 1yr deal with the Giants for $4.2M

WR Donte Stallworth goes to the Patriots rival Dolphins for $20M over 4yrs. He's the second former Patriot the Dolphins have signed this year.

39 year old DT Ted Washington gets a $4.8M deal from the Chiefs to play for one more year, but wait the Chiefs can't make the deal and Washington goes back into the Free Agent market and gets his 1yr $4.8M deal with a $1.5M signing bonus from the Bengals.

FS Gibril Wilson goes to the Patriots for $2.3M a year for 4 years

HB Travis Henry gets a $23M/5yr deal from the Texans

K Josh Brown signs with the Falcons for $1.9M a year for 2 years

The Broncos make TE Alge Crumpler a little richer with a 5yr deal worth around $22M

The Raiders almost make a trade for SF WR Arnaz Battle, but in the end SF decided to go for an offer from the Browns.

MLB Jeremiah Trotter signs a 5yr deal with the Bills reportedly worth $19.5M

MLB Odell Thurman gets a 5yr deal worth $15M from the Titans

32yr old RB Warrick Dunn signs a 1yr deal with the Lions for a whopping $6.6M!

C Jeff Faine is looking for and gets a 3yr deal worth $13.5M from the Buccaneers

OLB Rob Morris gets a 1yr $3.2M deal from the Saints

WR DJ Hackett is going to cost too much for the Raiders. He ends up signing a 5yr deal worth $28M with the 49ers

SS Donovin Darius agrees to play for the Denver Broncos next year for $4.8M

QB Trent Green signs a 1yr deal with the Falcons for a reported $7.5M

HB Kevin Jones signs with the Titans for $6.5M over 2 years

The Dolphins overpay for another DT signing Grady Jackson to a 1yr $4.4M deal

HB Michael Pittman can't get any offers, you'd think that someone would pony up a little dough, especially if Matt Millen was willing to shell out $6.6M for Warrick Dunn

WR Darrell Jackson signs with the Vikings for $6.5M over 2yrs

SF signs K Olido Mare to a 1yr deal worth $1.6M

OLB Takeo Spikes has 13 teams interested in him, but in the end agrees to a 2yr deal worth $6.8M with the Giants

Oakland Kicker Janikowski Arrested After Getting Into a Bar Fight

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. --Oakland Raider kicker Sebastian Janikowski was jailed during the weekend after getting into a fight in a restaurant, police said.

Janikowski was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of misdemeanor assault, misdemeanor vandalism and public drunkenness, Walnut Creek Lt. Loren Cattolico said Monday. Janikowski was also suspected of breaking the mirrors off some cars parked near the restaurant.

Police said they were called when a fight broke out at Slates Supper Club in Walnut Creek. Several people told officers they had been assaulted by Janikowski, who was "very intoxicated," police said.

The football player wasn't very cooperative with officers but didn't resist arrest, Cattolico said. No one had serious injuries.

A team spokesman did not return a call seeking comment. Although, NFL commentator Peter King comments, “This could be it for Janikowski in Oakland. New Head Coach Joslin doesn’t like his guys acting stupid like this.”

This is not Janikowski’s only run in with the law. Janikowski pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving and was placed on three years' probation last year. In 2001, Janikowski was acquitted on charges of possessing the "date-rape" drug GHB. And in 2000, he was acquitted on a charge of attempting to bribe a police officer.

Janikowski’s continued trouble with the law could spell an end to his time in Oakland, where he has played since being drafted with the #17 pick in the 2000 draft.

                  Free Agency Part 3

The Rams sign K John Carney to a 1yr deal worth $1.7M

The Raiders make a bid for OLB Roy Manning, but in the end have to let the Bills take him when the price tag gets too costly. 5yr deal worth $15.5M with a $2.5M bonus

The Raiders take a look at WR Javon Walker, but he wants more money than Coach Joslin has in the budget. Walker ends up signing with the Titans for $6.5M over 2yrs

OLB Roosevelt Colvin signs with the Jaguars, 2yr deal worth $5.8M

QB Daunte Culpepper walks away the only winner in a bidding war between the Packers and the Bills. The Bills end up with the price tag of $16M over 2yrs.

The Chiefs sign veteran RT Fred Miller, 1yr $2.8M

The Eagles win the bidding war for the services of DE Jevon Kearse, 1yr $5.6M

The Panthers sign aging WR Marty Booker 1yr $3.2M

K John Hall, K Morten Anderson, and K Lawrence Tynes go to the Broncos, Titans and Seahawks respectively each getting more than $1.5M for a year. Still, no interest in Raider K Sebastian Janikowski from the league.

With the number of teams in need of a kicker dwindling rapidly, Coach Joslin makes a deal with the New Orleans Saints. The Raiders send K Sebastian Janikowski to New Orleans and the Saints send OLB Scott Fujita to Oakland.

The Saints round out their special teams unit by signing P Matt Turk to a 1yr $1M deal

The Panthers sign run blocking RT Max Starks 5yr $11.5M deal

The Raiders sign former practice squad member LT Torrin Tucker to a 2yr deal worth $1.3M with no bonus. GM Al Davis isn't too happy about this as Tucker isn't the bonafide star he was looking for. Tucker is a bargain though and he will improve the OLine. (with a cap # of $630K, my Free Agent budget is now down to $2.67M)

C Dan Koppen goes to the Panthers for $17M over 5yrs. Coach Joslin really wanted Koppen, but the price tag was too high.

C Justin Hartwig also gets bid out of the Raiders reach by the Seahawks who nab him with a 5yr deal worth $16M

Coach Joslin is tempted by OLB Dallas Sartz, but the trade for Scott Fujita takes OLB off the priority list so Sartz ends up in NE with a 5yr $10M deal

WR Jerry Porter won't be coming back to Oakland, Porter signs with the Texans for $6.5M over 2yrs

OLB Boss Bailey goes to the Texans for $3.4M over 2yrs

Raiders consider a trade for QB J.P. Losman, but with QBs JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter and Ken Dorsey already on the roster it doesn't make sense to give up a couple of draft picks for him. In the end, Losman goes to the Titans for their 7th rounder (214) and their 5th round pick in 2009.

FS Madieu Williams signs a 2yr deal with the Dolphins for an estimated $3.1M

QB Joey Harrington looks to get a new start in GB signing a 1yr deal worth $2.4M

LG Toniu Fonoti goes to the Cardinals for $4.6M over 2yrs

LG Kili Lefotu goes to the Dolphins with a 5yr deal worth $9M

Needing a WR with decent hands, the Raiders trade for Giants WR David Tyree. The Raiders gave up their 6th round pick (163) for the veteran reciever from Syracuse

The Titans put QB Kerry Collins on the trade block, figuring with the recent acquisition of QB JP Losman they don't need him. The Raiders consider bringing in QB Kerry Collins via trade, but with 3 QBs on the roster and not much to trade, it just isn't feasible. Collins ends up going to the Broncos for a 5th round pick in 2009

Raiders add RT Damien Woody to the roster by giving him a 2yr $2.6M deal with no bonus. Woody is likely to be moved to Center, the position he played in college. (a cap hit of $1.3M leaves me with $1.37M to get more Free Agents)

The Raiders try to sign RT George Foster but can't get him to agree to a deal in the time limit. Foster was demanding a signing bonus of $500K and Coach Joslin wasn't willing to budge. It is just as well, as after reevaluating Foster, he was deemed a poor fit. "We got lucky on that one," commented HC Joslin on the failed signing.

SS Sammy Knight signs with the Chargers for $1.7M for 1yr

Raiders pass on LT Chris Colmer due to injury concerns

Troubled WR Chris Henry goes to the Cardinals for $3M a year for 2yrs

Raiders sign RT Chris Terry to a 1yr $700K deal. Terry is likely to be tried at RG (his $700k salary reduces me to a budget of $670K for FA)

QB Byron Leftwich was released by the Jaguars and has signed a 1 year deal with the Colts for $2.3M

                      Re: Just Win Baby!

                      NFL Draft 2008

The Raiders only have two picks in this draft, #4 overall and a 7th rounder (#211). It is unlikely that GM Al Davis will trade down, so he's going to need to make two really good picks.

                      1. MIA LT Jake Long, Michigan -Dolphins add the anchor to the Offensive Line. Huge, tough, and surprisingly agile, Long's a mammoth all-around blocker who does almost everything at a high level. Tremendously strong and with an attitude that punishes defenders, he's a sure-thing NFL run blocker who can step in on day one and produce.

                      2. STL OLB Vernon Gholston, Ohio State- the Rams want to generate more pass rush and think that Gholston can be that guy...still a bit of shocker here, DE is a need and DE C. Long is right there waiting to be picked. Everyone is always going to wonder why the Rams didn't go with Chris Long. It's all about the motor. If Gholston has the fire lit under him and goes full-tilt all the time, he's the best defensive player in the draft and he could be the best overall talent available. The question will be his game-in-game-out consistency

                      3. ATL QB Matt Ryan- the Falcons draft their QB of the future. Ryan is tough as nails, a great leader, and a winner who'll make a Pro Bowl or three, but he's not a once-in-a-generation type. While he's considered head-and-shoulders ahead of everyone else in the race to be the top NFL quarterback prospect in this year's draft,

                      4. OAK OG Brandon Albert, Virginia-The Raiders have lots of holes to fill, HB, WR, OT, OG, and C. GM Al Davis decided to go OL and felt that Albert was the best option out there. For once he made a good choice. While he's not D'Brickashaw Ferguson as far as a prospect, he has a lot in common with the former Virginia star. Albert is a great athlete who only cemented himself further as the top guard prospect in the draft with some nice off-season workouts. Even though he has the range and the moves to be a tackle, even on the left side, he could be a superstar if he stays inside. A killer run blocker who started from day one, he can be plugged into any NFL line and be a starter somewhere

                      5. KC DE Chris Long- Chiefs love that he fell to them at 5. Motor, motor, motor, motor, motor. A natural pass rusher, Long is a tremendous all-around end who can get into the backfield any time he wants to and is a playmaker against the run. Even when nothing seems to be happening, he finds a way to make a play on sheer drive and desire.

                      6. NYJ OLB Keith Rivers- Jets get a tackling machine in Rivers. Is he really good, or does he stand out because this is such a miserable year for linebackers? It's a little of both. He has the body, the quickness, and the pop to be an impact playmaker on the outside and he plays faster than he actually is. Tough enough to play on the inside and quick enough to wreak havoc on the outside, he could end up being a better pro than a college player if he's turned loose more often into the backfield

                      7. NWE HB Darren McFadden- Patriots grab the most talented player in the draft when they pick the HB from Arkansas. Not really a need, but the Patriots can afford to pick by talent over need. While it might be easy to blow off the off-the-field issues and the character questions, they do merit attention. Is he Rashaan Salaam/Curtis Enis once he hits the big time? The speed is jaw-dropping, the burst and quickness are phenomenal, and the college résumé is unquestioned. Physically, at the next level, his issues could be with ball security and getting into the open to make the long runs he'll need to make a big impact

                      8. BAL DT Glenn Dorsey- The Ravens look to keep their defense strong by adding the premier DT in the draft. Everyone's trying to poke holes in a near-perfect prospect, but there aren't any. An ultimate warrior who'll play through injury, pain, triple teams, and everything you throw at him, he played over the second half last year when most players who project to be a top five pick would've sat out and not risked his future

                      9. CIN DT Sedrick Ellis- Bengals look to solidify their DL. A phenomenal interior pass rusher who took his game up another level in his senior season, Ellis anchored the USC line and showed the strength and toughness to handle double team after double team and still produce. He's a more creative pass rusher than most ends and it a brick wall against the run

                      10. NO trades the pick to Denver for the 12th overall pick and a 4th round pick this year (116) and a 4th next year. DEN OLB Jerod Mayo- Solid all around player, but I'm not sold on him as a top 10 pick. One of the high risers among scouting circles, everyone came late to the party; this guy was one of the SEC's best players for a few years even with his knee problems. While he looks more like a pumped up safety and a thick, blow-'em-up linebacker, he's a great tackler who can play inside and out in any system. He does make a lot of mental mistakes.

                      11. BUF RT Jeff Otah- The Bills were hoping Long would fall a few more spots, but are happy to add Otah to their OL. A massive run blocker who will plow over everyone at the next level, he's ideal for anyone with a power running game and has the attitude to punish and destroy anyone who gets in his path. While he's not all that athletic and isn't going to be great on the move, he should be able to get by on his strength and his 6-6, 325-pound size

                      12. NO CB Leodis McKelvin- Smart choice by the Saints to add a quality DB here He wasn't even the best defensive back on his own team last year; Elbert Mack had the better season. McKelvin has the speed, clocking in a 4.39 40, and he's big and strong enough to make plenty of big hits and not be pushed around by the bigger receivers. Not afraid to step up against the run, he's hardly a prima donna when it comes time to get dirty

                      13. CAR RT Gosder Cherilus- the Panthers look to solidify their OL. One of the high risers after a good off-season, he's a 6-7, 315-pound athlete who destroys defenders when he gets the chance. He'll bust his tail to get better and will be coachable

                      14. CHI QB Joe Flacco- the Bears think this strong armed QB from Delaware could be the solution at QB The hot prospect coming out of the off-season workouts, the 6-6, 232-pound bomber has the best arm of anyone in the draft and it's not even a debate. While he might not have JaMarcus Russell's cannon, he can fit the ball into any space, anywhere on the field. The biggest question will be his consistency which was a big problem in his workouts and will be an even bigger issue under pressure. He can't move, doesn't have a quick release, and will be a sitting duck at times unless he can make quicker reads and can get the ball out of his hands

                      15. DET trades down one spot and picks up the Cardinals 5th round pick (144) and a 5th round pick in 2009 ARI LE Derrick Harvy- Talented pass rusher, should help the Cardinals keep pressure on opposing QBs. While he looks like a pass rusher and has the athleticism and ability to become a top end, he still has to tap into his talent. Very strong and good against the run, he's not going to get moved around by the stronger tackles

                      16. DET CB Dominique Cromartie- I'm not sold on this guy, but the Lions need someone to pair with CB Leigh Bodden. The high riser of the corners after the Combine, Rodgers-Cromartie blazed off a 4.34 40. At 6-1 and 184 pounds he has great sized to go along with that phenomenal speed and athleticism, and he's great at going after the ball and making something happen when he gets his hands on it. While he didn't see a high level of competition at Tennessee State, he looked like he could've been from LSU or Ohio State with the way he matched up against top receivers at the Senior Bowl.

                      17. KC LT, Ryan Clady- the Chiefs go OL. A little thought about recruit, Clady turned into pure gold for Boise State as he was a dominant all-around blocker from the start. He proved in the Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma that he could produce at the highest level with a fantastic performance, and he was consistently fantastic his entire career. Arguably the best pass blocker in the draft, he's quick on his feet and can pound away when needed

                      18. HOU HB Rashard Mendenhall- The Texans weren't sold on their FA acquisitions, and thought Mendenhall might solve the problem long term. Back in 1999, Ricky Williams was the sure-thing, must-have running back who appeared to be the obvious choice as the first back taken. The Colts made a big call by taking Edgerrin James fourth, with Williams going fifth, and they turned out to be right. This might be the same dynamic between Darren McFadden and Rashard Mendenhall. Late on the draft scene with only one big year at Illinois, Mendenhall has some questions about his long-term ability

                      19. PHI LT Chris Williams - lots of teams looking to improve their OLine. The range of opinion on what Williams is, and what he could become, runs the gamut. One of the most athletic linemen in the draft in a 6-6, 315-pound body, he looks the part and should grow into an elite pass blocker. He can eventually be plugged in on the left side and let roll for a decade. However, he had a mediocre workout on his pro day and he's not necessarily a killer. If he can grow into more of a powerful run blocker, he should be terrific

                      20. TB CB Mike Jenkins- Buccaneers looking for an eventual replacement for R. Barber, great pick who should contribute early A tremendous three-year starter on a good USF defense, Jenkins is a true shut-down corner who isn't afraid to get physical and can all but erase the top receivers when he has his game on. The question is his motor. If it's going full-tilt and he wants it, he looks like an all-star. When he suffers lapses or doesn't get up for the competition, he can be beaten by average receivers.

                      21. WAS CB Antoine Cason- The Seahawks look to improve their secondary with this pick Arguably the best defensive back in the Pac 10 for the last four years, Cason was a consistently great playmaker doing a little of everything well from making 253 career tackles to picking off 15 throws to breaking up 37 passes, including 19 in his senior year alone. Not a blazer, but with good size, he could end up moving to free safety

                      22. DAL HB Felix Jones- The Cowboys think this guy could be as talented as the other Arkansas RB and are happy to get him here He'll be the back for someone trying to get a speed runner on the cheap. Don't want to pay the high price to get a McFadden, Mendenhall or Stewart? Then wait for Jones and roll the dice on a jack-of-all-trades back with a ton of tread on the tires and devastating breakaway speed. The big question is whether or not he's a workhorse No. 1 back

                      23. PIT CB Aqib Talib- The Steelers look to improve their secondary At 6-1 and 197 pounds with 4.49 speed, Talib has the measurables. He had few problems against any receiver with size and could stay with most speed receivers, but he had a few problems in some big games. Kansas State's Jordy Nelson ate Talib alive. A superior athlete, he was used as a receiver before finally settling into the defensive backfield full-time last year. There's an attitude, for good and bad, and he's been used to being a special player on a team full of overachievers

                      24. TEN DT Kentwan Balmer- With the departure of Albert Haynesworth the Titans needed a big body in the middle Easily the toughest call among the tackles, Balmer went from being a nice inside presence for the Tar Heels to a major producer in his senior season. With his 6-4, 308-pound size and shocking quickness, he has the power to be an anchor who occupies a few blockers at a time, and he has the athleticism to dominate as an end in a 3-4 scheme. Now the question is whether or not he wants it badly enough

                      25. Sea TE Dustin Keller- Mike Holmgren like using a TE and feel that Keller could be his guy. Make no mistake, Keller's performance in the Motor City Bowl earned him this selection. Considered around the third or fourth best tight end prospect after the season, Keller blew everyone away at the Combine running a 4.57 and proving to be the most athletic of the bunch. While he's not going to block anyone and he doesn't have prototypical size, coming in at 6-2 and around 245 pounds, he has the potential to be a dangerous receiver with the potential to grow into a plus for r the ground game

                      26. JAX LT Duane Brown - going with the theme of the day the Jaguars look to improve their OLine. The former tight end beefed up to well over 300 pounds without losing much of his athleticism. However, he's not a pure pass protector and had big problems with the better defensive ends. He had a nice off-season and was good on the workout circuit, and he has great upside, but he needs the time and the work to develop. He could be a guard now, or a starting tackle in a few years.

                      27. SD LT Sam Baker- San Diego wanted a guy to help protect their franchise QB and provide excellent blocking for HB LaDanian Tomlinson, they think they found that guy in Baker. The son of the Arena Football League's commissioner is an athletic big man who was tremendously productive for four years playing at the highest level each and every week. While he's good in pass protection and is great on the move, he's not necessarily a rock against speed rushers and isn't quite as dominant a run blocker as many would like. He's a technician; not a mauler.

                      28. DAL LE Lawrence Jackson- Dallas adds depth and insurance at DE with this pick In this draft, Jackson is a poor man's Vernon Gholston. A little bit bigger than the former Ohio State star but not quite as fast, he's a versatile defender who could project as an outside linebacker in the right system. Unlike Gholston, there's room to beef up with another ten pounds of muscle. A decent pass rusher, but not an elite one quite yet, he needs a fire lit under him to become a top-shelf closer

                      29. SF RE Philip Merling- the 49ers didn't have much of a pass rush last year and they hope that Merling will help them fix that problem The upside is limitless if a coaching staff is willing to be patient and will work with him on becoming a more refined pass rusher. He's great at getting to the quarterback and creating pressure, but he needs to become a better closer, which likely would've happened if he had stayed for his senior season. With excellent size, he can be a near-perfect end in a 4-3 and has the quickness to grow into a top pass rusher in a 3-4. Always working and always on, he never dogs a play and is always going full-tilt

                      30. GB HB Chris Johnson- I'm not sure why the Packers felt the need to go HB here, especially with Ryan Grant already in their backfield. Johnson could be used as a change of pace back. 4.29. For some reason, while everyone was oohing and ahhing over Darren McFadden's workout, along with the size/speed dynamic of Rashard Mendenhall and Jonathan Stewart, and rightly so, Johnson ripped off a 4.29 in 40 at the Combine. One of the best all-around backs in America last year rushing for 1,423 yards and 17 touchdowns, catching 37 passes for 528 yards and six touchdowns, and returning 1,009 yards worth of kicks, he can do it all.

                      31. STL- CB Brandon Flowers- The Rams look to improve their secondary and make a great selection in this Virgina Tech DB. Flowers grew into a big-time ball-hawker over his last two years at Virginia Tech breaking up 35 passes and picking off eight throws. A great tackler who seems to crave the assignment of facing a top-flight receiver, he has a safety hitting mentality in the body of a brash corner. His problem is his speed; he doesn't have much

                      32. MIA SS Kenny Phillips- Solid player, excellent coverage skills and a definite upgrade. Good pick by the Dolphins While he was considered a bit of a disappointment last year thanks to some ridiculously high standards, he still came up with 82 tackles and two interceptions. No, he's not Ed Reed or Sean Taylor, and he's a bit lanky and thin at 6-2, 212 pounds, but he's a nice athlete who doesn't miss many tackles. The biggest problem isn't raw speed or his inability to live up to the tremendous hype, but it's his lack of big plays. He's a steady player, not a spectacular one.

                          Raiders Trade Update/ Rookie Signings

The Raiders send their 4th and 5th round picks in 2010 to New England for HB Kevin Faulk. Word is that Coach Joslin is intrigued by Faulk's pass catching skills and may use him as a 3rd down back or even as a WR in some sets.

Raiders add depth at WR and KR by sending their 6th round pick in 2010 to the Browns for WR Josh Cribbs

                          Rookie Signings:

LG Brandon Albert walks out of negotiations after GM Al Davis counters his original request of $30.25M over 5yrs with a $13M bonus and incentives for starting 16 games and making the pro-bowl of $1M each. He did comeback to the negotiating table and a deal was worked out for $28.25 over 5years with $13M bonus, no incentives.

K Brandon Koutu signs a 2yr deal worth $850k, no bonus

                            Oakland LT Mario Henderson Arrested

Oakland Raiders OT Mario Henderson was arrested after a traffic stop in downtown Napa Valley early Thursday, August, 1, for carrying a concealed firearm, according to police reports, reports NBC-2.com.

Henderson was pulled over by the police for playing music too loud in his vehicle. Police then asked Henderson if he had a gun in the car. Henderson did not correctly say where exactly the gun was, and is not licensed to carry a concealed firearms permit. Henderson was charged with carrying a concealed firearm and cited for failure to wear a seat belt and city ordinance violation for the loud car stereo.

This doesn't bode well for LT Henderson, as new Head Coach Ken Joslin holds his players to a strict code of conduct...and getting arrested pretty much means you are **** out of luck.

When asked about the arrest, Coach Joslin had this to say, "Just plain stupid and unacceptable. Mario will be released this week. We have no room on this team for guys that make stupid choices and can't conduct themselves like professionals."

NFL analysts predicted that Henderson was unlikely to last through training camp anyways, as Coach Joslin has shown a clear preference to LT Torrin Tuckerwho was signed n Free Agency.

Two once proud franchises hoping to get back to their winning ways meet today. While many think preseason games don't matter, they matter plenty to many members of both of these squads. These are the games where they prove they deserve a roster spot.

                              1st Quarter

SF QB Alex Smith has a TD called back on a holding penalty, so the 49ers have to settle for a FG by K Olindo Mare

                              SF 3 OAK 0

                              2nd Quarter

SF Adds another Mare FG to take a 6 pt lead

                              SF 6 OAK 0

OAK QB Ken Dorsey moves the team down the field efficiently and HB Justin Fargas seals the deal with a 3yd TD run

SF 6 OAK 7 at the half

                              3rd Qaurter

OAK FS Michael Huff forces a fumble, recoveries it and scrambles into the endzone for a TD

                              SF 6 OAK 14

                              4th Quarter

OAK rookie K Brandon Koutu adds a FG

                              SF 6 OAK 17

SF 3rd string QB Chris Weinke finds WR J. Hill for a 7yd TD, they go for the 2pt conversion but fail

                              SF 12 OAK 17

OAK runs the clock down and then QB Andrew Walter takes a knee to end it.
