It's only my 2nd season but to big name coaches get axed a lot or do they have more leeway then a young coach?

Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
...in my dynasty. He's got a 31% approval rating which is the worst in the NCAA.

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
I would say no to the second part.. Its a computer.. they just go by the numbers.
And Joe Pa made it out of the first season? In every dynasty I have played he has retired after year one.Comment

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
Yeah...he's there. Actually...I just went and checked and he's up to a 37% ranking now. He's the 4th worst.
So, I thought, he must have won his last game to make his percentage go up. I checked that, and the worst part is...get this...THEY ARE 8-0!
This was probably discussed in that long thread about coaching carousel that I didn't read. Whatever...Comment

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
We're actually in our third season and he had a terrible approval rating last year (I was kind of hoping to jump into the OC job). After all was said and done, he didn't leave. This was after a year that they finished last in the B1G and got demoted to the Big East because of it (running a personalized promotion relegation setup). Seems like that would have been the year to go

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
In my third season JoPa had the lowest HC rating and I was sure he'd get fired. But, in the off-season, when I see the Penn State job open, it says he "retired".
They gave him an honorable out!

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
I just finished up my fourth year and Joe Pa got canned. So did the offensive coordinator at Penn State. I have seen a lot of high profile coaches being fired in the first four seasons. Mac Brown got fired this off season. Jimbo Fisher, Les Miles, Will Muschamp and many others that I can't think of at this moment.
But what I don't get is how the heck do I get a offer? I played out my initial contract at SMU 3 years and met all my categories. I got 0 offers for any other position and it showed two positions open. SMU and TCU. I looked at both and neither was interested in my as HC. So I accept my offer of 2 years and some insane categories to reach. Somehow I reach all of them in the first year of the deal win our second national championship(back to back). I go into the off season and once again not a single offer made to me. We have won two national championships won the big 12 a few times and I think only lost 5 games in that span. No bigger program wants to offer me a job? what's up with that.

Is your playbook the Run N' Shoot? If so then that is why, schools want to hire a coach that has a similar playbook to them or is an alma mater.I just finished up my fourth year and Joe Pa got canned. Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
Yeah I have SMU under my coaching philosophy but I always self edit it to South Carolina before I got into the game. So the other teams really wouldn't offer me a job because I had it set as SMU offense when I wasn't using it? I saved it before I went to the off season. If I go back and edit my offense before going into the off season I could get a job offer?
Oh well for that idea. Stupid auto save got me stuck in the pre season. I guess I have to play out this year then hope for a HC offer once my contract is up.Last edited by InspectahDeck; 08-02-2011, 10:59 PM.

I think it matters which you have on your coaching philosophy. I mean.. problem with the Run n Shoot is only SMU and Hawaii are looking for it. Air Raid/Option are similar. Your best bet is to have your philosophy as Pro/Spread/Multiple. That should help you get offers.Yeah I have SMU under my coaching philosophy but I always self edit it to South Carolina before I got into the game. Edit: I mean, I have heard of people on this forum getting fired from their coordinator job from Maryland after winning a BCS bowl game but it was because they had a vastly different philosophy then what they run which is the spread I believe.Last edited by MagicMan1315; 08-02-2011, 11:01 PM.Comment

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
4 years in with a new system of 5 16 team conferences(the five majors, rest have 8 or 6), he's still the head coach at psu in the B1G, but he's at like 21% approval, so's his oc.
As for the person trying to get a head coach job, you actually have to go through the carosel. You'd be surprised how many teams will offer you a job. Just remember that you started at smu though so your prestige wont be that high(prolly a b or so I dont know). Without presitge, better schools dont look at you at ALL. Over acheive and get all your goals done over the first 3 years and you should have a mid tier school hc offer or big time school oc/dc contract.
I dont know if the playbook has anything to do with it though. They'd like to stay with a similar playbook but if they can get a better coach to fill the spot they dont care if you have the same playbook they had the year before. Most teams only stick with the same style if they're extending the contract of who was there, otherwise they go a different direction...
Personally though, there is no better Offensive playbook than multiple. Wishbone, flexbone, several shotguns including the florida gators heavy formation, a wildcat formation(with a deadly over tackle formation sub), wildcat formations subs in other shotgun forms, several 4 and 5 wide/empty formations, limited but useful ace and I forms. Maryland I plays in goal line formation.
Its everything I could ever want in a playbook... until I create my own based on it!Comment

Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
But if that was true, why am I seeing option coaches getting hired at Hawai'i? Teams don't have a philosophy; coaches do. Now maybe at coordinator it matters a bit more, but as a HC, you run the team. Why would a school care what your philosophy is? The players you recruit will, yes, but the school ain't going to care if you are meeting your goals.I think it matters which you have on your coaching philosophy. Re: Jo Pa's Head is on The Chopping Block...
From the sounds of this and other comments here, the game must have an "old" clause or something that makes old coaches' approval rating go down. There is no other explanation for one of the greatest coaches ever getting the worst approval ratings...even when he's 8-0.
I think we have a case for an ageism lawsuit.Comment
