Re: Black Shoes, Basic Blues, No Names, All Game: Penn State Football

The 2010 season for the Penn State Nittany Lions began in a way that hasn't happened since 1910. Robert Bolden became the first true freshman quarterback to start the opening game 100 years since the times of Shorty Miller. Bolden led the team to a 44-14 victory over the Penguins of Youngstown State. The second game of the season saw Penn State battle the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide. Turnovers and an inability to finish off drives led to a 24-3 loss. The Lions delivered the team's first shutout since the 2009 match-up against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The Nittany Lions edged out Temple behind the strong running of Evan Royster who gained 187 yards on 26 carries.
Against the Iowa Hawkeyes the redzone woes continued as they were only able to convert one field goal on three trips as Iowa defeated them 24-3. The Nittany Lions suffered their first defeat ever to Illinois at Beaver Stadium, they gave up 282 rushing yards while allowing the Illini to dominate the time of possession with over 38 minutes in a 33-13 loss. The first victory in Big Ten Conference play came against Minnesota. After Bolden was forced to leave the game with an apparent concussion. Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin took over at quarterback, with McGloin completing his first two career TD passes to Evan Royster.
Joe Paterno got his 399th win, while Matt McGloin got his first as a starting quarterback against conference foe Michigan. The same game Evan Royster surpassed Curt Warner as the all-time Penn State leading rusher by running for 150 yards and 2 TDs.
After speculation on who would be the starting quarterback, Rob Bolden, was given the nod after recovering from the concussion he sustained. However, after being hit hard in the first quarter was forced to leave the game with McGloin taking over. After trailing the Wildcats by 21 points late in the 2nd quarter, Penn State made a comeback and dominated the rest of the way. Royster and freshman Silas Redd both ran for over 130 yards while McGloin completed 4 TD passes. The win marked Joe Paterno's 400th victory as a head coach, a feat that will probably never be repeated.
After outplaying the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first half of the game and leading by 11 points, the Nittany Lions feel apart in the second half with 2 McGloin interceptions and a failure to stop the Ohio State rushing attack the Lions gave up 35 unanswered points in a 38-14 loss. Penn State scored two touchdowns on their first two drives of the game and led by 14 until the Hoosiers managed to tie the game at 24 in the third quarter. The Lions used an Andrew Dailey blocked punt and James Van Fleet's subsequent return to gain the momentum and carry them to a 17 unanswered point victory. Although Penn State outgained the Michigan State Spartans they still suffered a 6 point loss mostly because they only managed to score 3 points in the first three quarters.
The 2010 season culminated in a defeat in the 2011 Outback Bowl by the hands of the Florida Gators, during Urban Meyer's last game as the Gator's head coach. McGloin threw a school-record 5 interceptions in the game. The 37-24 loss ended the Nittany Lions season at a 7-6 mark, something they hope to improve upon this upcoming year.

Who Will Be the Starting Quarterback?

What to watch for on offense
: The battle over the starting quarterback position. Rob Bolden has the talent, with a bunch of upside, but he also played like the true freshman that he was. Matt McGloin is a former walk-on who became a national figure for starting for such a prestigious program. He did help to turn the Nittany Lion's season around but he did make a ton of mistakes throwing for a school record 5 interceptions in the bowl game loss to the Gators. If Bolden doesn't start this year it is almost a sure thing that he will transfer. Kevin Newsome is also on the bench, while proven that he can be a threat running the ball he's completed less than 50% of his passes. Paul Jones who was heavily recruited out of high school will have to sit out the season due to academic reasons.

                  Best Offesive Player
: Senior WR Derek Moye. If Moye had a star quarterback throwing him the ball, it would be very interesting to see what kind of production he would be able to have. Standing at 6'5" 202 pounds and running a sub 4.5 speed, he has all the tools to be special for the Lions. He will need to prove to be even more of a big play threat building on a 53 catch, 855 yards, and 8 touchdown season form last year.

                  Quarterback

                  Sophomore
Rob Bolden is the most talented of the quarterback's at Penn State. The 6'3" 211-pounder became the first true freshman to start a season under JoePa, and considering the pressure he was under he wasn't terrible. He does need to cut down on interceptions he threw 7 last season going with his 5 touchdowns. He was able to complete 58% of his passes for 1,360 yards. If he is given time to develop he could become a star. Matt McGloin, not nearly as talented, stepped in last year with sheer will and determination he finished the season with 1,548 yards for 14 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. The 6'1" 209 pound junior has a decent arm with some mobility, and while he as some spark and the right attitude, he doesn't have the pure talent of Bolden.

                  Kevin Newsome
is in line to be third string with Paul Jones having to sit out the season due to academic reasons. Newsome is a smart, athletic 6'2" 231 pound passer who might be able to become the next Michael Robinson in a few years if he work on his passing.

                  Running Backs

Sophomore Silas Redd was able to turn heads in spring ball last year, but didn't get too many chances to prove his worth. He carried the ball 77 times for 437 yards and two scores. He finished second on the team in rushing and averaged an impressive 5.7 yards per carry, but he didn't get the ball in his hands enough to become a star.

                  Senior
Stephfon Green was supposed to be a number 2 option lst year but only ran for 188 yards and one touchdown while averaging just 3.9 yards per carry. Hopefully he will be able to show his speed after struggling to come back from a broken leg he suffered in the Rose Bowl loss to USC a few years ago. Brandon Beachum, the 6'0" 230 pound redshirt-junior should supply the power.

                  6'1" 239 pound senior
Joe Suhey is a veteran fullback who started throughout the first half of the season was used almost exclusively as a blocker. While he only ran 8 times for 15 yards, he did caught 15 passes for 154 yards with a score. Michael Zordich, the former linebacker prospect, is a 6'1" 242 pound junior who has a defined role as a short yardage runner and a blaster of a blocker. He got 18 carries for 40 yards with three touchdowns and caught two passes for seven yards.

                  Receivers

                  Derek Moye
was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten performer last year and looks to be First-team All-Big Ten this season. A former Pennsylvania state champion sprinter, he is great in the open field, can track the deep ball well, and stretch the field. At 6'5" 202 pounds with great hands and sub 4.4 speed he provides a sizable target for whoever starts at quarterback. Brandon Moseby-Felder, is a 6'2" 185 pound receiver who will back up Moye and should be able to help out on the field.

                  Junior
Justin Brown stands at 6'3" 214 pounds had a nice season last year finishing third on the team with 33 catches for 452 yards and a score. He has the size and speed to be a perfect compliment for Moye. Sophomore Shawney Kersey has only caught one pass for 2 yards needs to become a factor. At 6'1" 203 pounds he has the size and deep speed to become a breakout play-maker.

Small, speedy 5'7" 157 pound junior
Devon Smith is ready to step up and become a big time player in the slot he made 27 catches for 363 yards and a touchdown. he should also be returning punts.

The offense needs way more production from the tight ends. This starts with 6'4" 250 pound sophomore
Kevin Haplea who started three times last year averaging a catch a game for 39 yards. He was a top recruit who has the receiving skills to become a go-to target, while 6'6" 266 pound senior Andrew Szczerba looks to become a player again after missing last year with a back injury.

                  Offensive Line

Looking to be an anchor of the team is
Quinn Barham, a 6'3" 302 pound senior who started every game at left tackle who had a terrific year as a pass protector. Helping Barham on the left side is 6'4" 323 pound senior guard Johnnie Troutman, is very big and ridiculously strong, he's built for the inside but has the tools and athleticism to work at tackle if needed. Matt Stankiewitch, will get the start at center, he is very smart and very quick, the 6'3" 296 pounder could grow into the role as the leader of the line with a little bit of time. John Urschel the projected starter at right guard is a 6'3" 284 pound sophomore who will need to be blasting run blocker from the start. DeOn'tae Pannell, 6'5" 316 pound senior, is a versatile, promising blocker who can see time at right tackle. 6'4" 301 pound senior, Chima Okoli started out his career as a defensive tackle but is a decent pass blocker and while he still needs to work on his technique, he's not quite polished, he's a big, physical blocker who should be better after the time he has logged in.

What to watch for on defense
: Linebacker U's return. Last season saw the team lose three major contributors in Navarro Bowman, Sean Lee, and Josh Hull. Last season was rough for the Lion's D but with the return of Michael Mauti, who will be a star if he can remain healthy, along with Nate Stupar who will put up big numbers playing on the outside. Khairi Fortt is fast and should see some time as well. Gerald Hodges is destined to finish among the team's top three in tackles, and Mike Hull while undersized should be a good backup on the outside. Penn State once again has a plethora of options and deserves the nickname of "Linebacker U"

                  Best defensive player
: Junior LB Michael Mauti. As stated earlier if he can stay healthy he will be the leader of the defense. Able to play any of the linebacker positions, the 6'2" 234-pounder is a big hitter, who should have over 100 tackles.

                  Defensive Line

The Nittany Lion line wasn't bad against the run but wasn't the solid rock that it usually is. The biggest issue was the non-existent pass rush that generated a pathetic 17 sacks, and losing
Pete Massaro this off-season to a torn ACL doesn't help. Senior Jack Crawford was supposed to be the next great Penn State pass rusher, after showing promise two years ago with 5.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. After being slowed by a foot injury last year, he only had 2 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. At 6'5" 265 pound he has the athleticism to blow up and he could be terrific this year. Also joining the rotation is 6'6" 278 pound senior Eric Latimore who could either start or be the back-up at both end positions. Junior Sean Stanley a 6'1" 245 pound end, who is a pure pass rusher with tremendous quickness needs to make an impact after coming up short last season. Kyle Baublitz, a 6'5" 261 pound red-shirt freshman could also be in the mix with his great athleticism.

The veteran anchor of the line is 6'5" 305 pound senior
Devon Still, who is one of the team's best all-around defenders. He could emerge as a Big Ten superstar after earning Honorable Mention last year. 6'1" 303 pound redshirt freshman Evan Hailes will be the backup but could become a starter given some playing time. 6'1" 316 pound junior Jordan Hill was the spot starter who is working his way into the starting lineup. He'll rotate with 6'3" 316 pound junior DaQuan Jones is still a work in progress, but he's very big and is just versatile enough to work at end in an emergency.

                  Linebackers

The key to the defensive improvement that the Lions need this year is the health of
Michael Mauti, a 6'2" 234 pound junior who missed all of 2009 with a torn ACL and was never quite right suffering from an ankle injury last season. He's expected to bloom into the team's next great linebacker. If he struggles with injuries again, 6'3" 240 pound redshirt freshman Glenn Carson will stepp in bringing good athleticism and size.

After working in a rotation with Mauti on the outside, 6'1" 239 pound senior
Nate Stupar, the State College native, will have a job all on his own after finishing third on the team with 73 tackles last year. He has the talent and ability to be a great all-around linebacker with great range and burst. While Stupar is good 6'2" 227 pound sophomore Khairi Fortt had a great off-season and might be even better. He is a great athlete and has the pass rushing ability to be a disruptive force on the outside.

                  6'2" 234 pound junior,
Gerald Hodges, a former safety who had an outstanding offseason is ready to become an impact player on D, he is a terrific hitter for his size, and is a great size. He'll be backed up by Mike Hull who is a smallish 6'0" 219 pound hitter with the smarts and bloodlines with his father a linebacker in the early 1970s.

                  Defensive Backs

Senior D'Anton Lynn earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors last season after finishing second on the team with 75 tackles and a team-leading three picks. The 6'1" 210 pound corner could become an NFL prospect if given the chance. Backing him up is 6'0" 178 pound sophomore Derrick Thomas, who shows promise but is inconsistent at times.

Starting opposite him is 5'8" 189 pound junior
Stephon Morris, a good corner who is sometimes too short when the ball is in the air. He is tremendously quick and isn't afraid to step up in run support. 6'1" 198 pound senior Chaz Powell stepped up when Morris struggled and will be a key back-up as a nickel and dime corner.

                  Ball-hawk senior
Nick Sukay is back at free safety, at 6'1" 207 pounds he always has a knack for being around the play. 5'11" 212 pound sophomore Malcolm Willis will still see time after he stepped into the starting role when Sukay was hurt. 5'10" 202 pound senior Drew Astorino if able to stay healthy is a big time producer, last season he had 70 stops a pick and five broken up passes. Playing the hero/strong safety position he earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors he returns as a leader in the secondary. Sophomore Stephen Obeng-Agyapong saw time in every game if only for a short while he is a valuable special teams player that can fill in for small amounts of time.

                  Special Teams

                  True freshman
Sam Ficken will get a long look to replace Collin Wagner as the starting kicker, he has a big leg and great range but sophomore Anthony Fera might be doing double duty. Fera averaged 41.4 yards per kick last season and had 13 kicks inside the 20 with just one touchback.

Key player to a successful season
: The starting quarterback. Whether it is Rob Bolden or Matt McGloin. Any time Penn State has been successful in recent years it is because they have an established player under center. Michael Robinson was phenomenal in 2005 and it was a special season. Daryll Clark led the team to a Rose Bowl berth and a win over LSU in the Capital One Bowl the following year. McGloin and Bolden aren't there yet but one of them needs to step up so that the Lions know who their guy is.

The season will be a success if
: Penn State is able to win ten games. The schedule is brutal, but the three toughest games - Alabama, Iowa, and Nebraska are at home. The Nittany Lions should be good enough to win at least one and maybe steal another. There is no way to know how good or bad Ohio State will be this season, and Wisconsin still has to prove itself even with their dynamic duo at running back returning. Winning the Leaders division will be a stretch, but by winning nine regular season games and pulling off a bowl win, ten is reachable.

                  Key game
: November 19th Ohio State. Penn State won't be playing for a national title so losing to Alabama early in the season won't be that big of a deal. If Penn State isn't the favorite in their first five Big Ten games against Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern, and Illinois. The Nebraska game is an inter-division match-up that might not matter in the Big Ten Championship race, but by beating Ohio State the game at Madison against Wisconsin could decide who represents the Leaders.

                  Schedule:

                  Sept. 3 Indiana State
                  Sept. 10

                  Sept. 17 @

                    Big Ten Predictions

                    Leaders Division:

First Place: The Badgers are coming back from a 2010 season in which they split the conference title with Michigan State and Ohio State. Out of the three co-champions they lose the least and made the biggest addition with quarterback Russell Wilson. With Wilson, Wisconsin has legitimate shot at the National Title.

Second Place: If JoePa is able to figure out who his starting quarterback is before the Big Ten season kicks off, the Nittany Lions have a great chance finishing in one of the top two positions of the Leaders division. Penn State has the toughest non-conference game of any of their Big Ten foes when it hosts Alabama, but with a win there could be National Title aspirations.

Third Place: With the departure of Jim Tressell and Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State has a rough road to travel with a difficult away game at Miami. Everyone on the schedule will smell blood in the water and will be gunning for them. With games against Michigan State, Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin there is a chance they could start conference play at 0-4.

Fourth Place: Losing Mikel Leshoure to the NFL will hurt, but with Nathan Scheelhaase the Illini have the one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the Big Ten. The Illini offense should be able to move the ball, but the D has lost too many players to make a run at the division.

Fifth Place: Purdue was injured all year last season but even with everyone healthy more than 5 wins would be considered a successful season for the Boilermakers. They should be able to beat Indiana and Minnesota but any other conference win is hard to see.

Sixth Place: The first season under Kevin Wilson the Hoosiers are hoping for nothing more than a bowl appearance. If they plan to do so they need to win all their non-conference games, the toughest is against Virginia. They will also need to beat two out of these three opponents Illinois, Northwestern, and/or Purdue.

                    Legends Division

First Place: The Spartans aren't the best team in the division but they do have an easier schedule than the team who is the best, Nebraska. They do have a star quarterback in Kirk Cousins who may have a shot at the NFL with a spectacular season. With the Spartans having a game against Indiana instead of Nebraska's game against Penn State.

Second Place: The first season in the Big Ten for the Cornhuskers is also one of the toughest schedules in the conference. They miss Indiana and Purdue on the schedule, which would be two easy wins. They do have an easy road game versus Minnesota, but their other three away games are against Michigan, Wisconsin, and Penn State. Their season finishes with a newly formed rivalry against Iowa. The team might even be able to beat Michigan State but they will probably have two losses in conference.

Third Place: Denard Robinson has a host of play-makers around him, he could lead the Big Ten's most explosive offense, but with a defense that needs to improve drastically and breaking in new head coach Brady Hoke anything better than a third place finish would be a success story for this storied progam.

Fourth Place: Dan Persa might be one of the most underrated players in the NCAA. Any time they get a star QB they seem to be able to make a run at the Big Ten crown. They might not be able to do that but expect them to play tough all season and be a solid bowl team.

Fifth Place: With Ricky Stanzi gone the Hawkeyes need to find a replacement they do play two BCS teams in non-conference who if they are not able to beat the may miss out on a bowl game. They are helped by Indiana and Purdue being their cross-over division opponents.

Sixth Place: Jerry Kill is a new coach who should be able to help build the Gophers into a legitimate Big Ten team in a few years, but now is not that time. Opening the season at USC doesn't help them. The team has even struggled with division 1-AA opponents and a home game against North Dakota State isn't a given.

                    Champion: Wisconsin

Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year: Either Wisconsin's James White/Montee Ball or Michigan's Denard Robinson.

Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year: Nebraska's Jared Crick or Lavonte David.

                    Coach of the Year:
Bret Bielema, Bo Pelini, Mark Dantonio, or Joe Paterno

I'm obviously not completely done with updating all of the previous posts however I wanted to take the time to say you can start posting now as well as the fact that I am making a Create-a-Recruit thread that will have the link below. Also I plan on doing an interview with JoePa so if you could post questions on here for him to answer I'd appreciate it greatly.

I think you made a wise choice in going with Penn State. Looking forward to watching it take off.
