Gamers Who Refuse to Play Madden Embrace Older Games

Are you a gamer that refuses to play Madden and embrace older games? Check out the article from Patrick Hruby, of The Washington Times.

I know we have quite a few of these guys here at OS. What's your story?

For the legion of control-pad jockeys who have made “Madden NFL” both an annual best-seller and a pop-culture phenomenon, Tuesday’s arrival of the franchise’s newest iteration had the makings of an unofficial national holiday: late-Monday-night purchasing lines outside electronics stores, a surge in online excitement and competitive trash talk, and a rash of dubious sick-day call-ins to work.

Now in its 23rd year, the “Madden” football video game has become nearly as much of a national obsession as the sport it simulates, with cumulative sales exceeding 70 million copies, a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a branded ESPN television series and numerous NFL players among the title’s devoted followers. Nevertheless, within the gaming community, there are hundreds - maybe thousands - of dissidents, united by a rejection of all things “Madden NFL.”

As much as I love 2K5 and hate Madden, i'm gonna give in and give it a try this weekend. 2K5 is just to old for me, IMO...

I got my first Madden game in High School back in 1992 (Sega Genesis).

But now, I refuse to play it because of failed promises, blatant lies, perpetual mediocrity, and institutionalized underachievement. I have been lied to since 2007 and in 2010 I said enough is enough.

Right now I play Backbreaker and APF 2K8, because I have to. Both games have their glaring faults as well, but at least they are doing well with what they have been given. I grade their efforts with a curve.

If Madden implements a new physics engine, I might think about buying again.

Interesting article, but I feel like I wasted 20 minutes of my free time being interviewed for nothing. I recognize most of the names in that article and some of them aren't really even active in the online community anymore (not just OS). Sour grapes. I guess I won't be telling my friends and family to look it up.

Just wanted to point this out, lest people thought I was poking fun of the 2K5ers - I believe (strongly) that NFL 2K5 was, and is, the pinnacle of football gaming. It's just long in the tooth now and shows it's age.

Obviously, the relationship between feature writer and editor is a complicated one, and I suspect that Mr. Hruby had a wider perspective in mind here that may have been altered somewhat. It's normal for a lot of any published article (especially in print, like the Washington Times) to lose at lot to the cutting floor - it's just the nature of the beast.

Nevertheless, it's definitely an interesting read, and one that carries a lot of weight on the date of Madden 12's launch.

My story is that every single current gen Madden has been an absolutely awful representation of football. Period. (yes that includes 12)

Not a bad article I would have expected it to be a bit more in depth but he made the point in a positive way,I don't know about those guys who refuse to play Madden all most of us ever really wanted was an option and not be steered towards a one and only choice this is still America and as such I feel the deal was totally unfair but its all about the buisness/bucks and that company didn't think of the real fans who lose that option.

Oh by the way I did purchase Madden as I do every year and still enjoy 2k Football and editing rosters as I have a real passion for the game and plan on having fun with both.

Same story. It's weird to see the NCAA franchise flourish but their next door neighbors make some basic mistakes.

I'm trying to complete my 2k5 100%. all milestones, career stats, etc. I think Madden is playable, but I just don't like the fundamentals of the game, I feel they are too frustrating. So, I'll be focusing on 2k5 again this year.

Also, just started a Carolina franchise and got rookie Stephen Jackson and rookie Roy Williams. It will be a fun season

I used to love Madden but really enjoyed 2k when it became available for PS1. I just enjoyed the feel. I dumped Madden before when NFL Gameday came out but came back a yr later. I played 2k5 until last yr when I bought APF8. I rent Madden but just can't get into it. I don't like the feel. Depending on what I hear I may rent this yrs version. I haven't bought Madden since 2002 I think.

I must admit that I have a bit of sour grapes because of only one developer making an NFL game. This is the first year that I have not gotten madden, mostly because the price is a tad bit high for very little changes.

Nice to see an FSU Alumn in the story. I took a stand this year and decided not to buy Madden.
