NHL 12 "Be A GM" Mode Discussion Thread

Just looking to see if the following issues from NHL 11 (and 10 and 09 ) Have been addressed like claimed by EA before I decide to buy the game.

Thanks to any of you who choose to help me make this choice through your opinions and experience with the GM mode this year.

Are the FA and RFA issues with the CPU AI been addressed ( ex High rated players being unsigned for whole seasons, non tendering of highly touted RFA and let become UFA)

Scheduling Issues post year one. (ex crazy schedules like 15 straight road games or back to back home games with the same team)

Players being sent to minors that have no business being there because of the CPU's inability to handle salary cap.

Does player progression "work" out of the box this year?

I really respect and appreciate the many views of the veteran BeaGM mode vets here and would really love to get some feedback before I make the choice to purchase/not purchase this year.

    Thanks much in advance.

Havent seen too many guys in the minors that shouldnt be. Ruslan Fedatenko and Derek Stephan with the Rangers were the best AHL players I saw in my first year of OTW Senators franchise, but in real life Stephan could struggle in year #2 like Josh Bailey did and Fedetenko is a 20 game scoreless slump away from the AHL anyway.

      Not totally unrealistic.

The minor league systems are handled much better. Guys like Adam Larsson and Sean Couturier arent released into free agency as after year one both seem to get signed to entry level 3 year deals. As for player progression and great free agents sitting out a year havent simmed enough of it yet to really find out.

Does the game force you to have an 82 game season or do you have a choice this time on season length?

1st Question - yes, the issues have been addressed. The FA is better this year - by late august, all the 85+ rating free agents were signed and the highest player left was 83 overall - boynton or someone.
2nd Question - unfortunately no, during the 2nd season, you still ridiculous schedules were you play 4 games in a row, etc.

            hope that helps

My wishes from the NHL12 wishlist thread:

1: Be a GM needs better record-keeping. I'm seeing guys with only 4 years of stats. I can't easily go back and see what my past teams have done. It seems like Be a GM just forgets the past and moves on to the future.

2: In the off-season, the retirement page needs some filtering. I don't get why my players who retire from the AHL are listed in the enormous free agents list. I also want to see HOW my players have advanced. I love that in Madden, I can see precisely how my players have advanced or declined. In NHL11, the fact appears to be an after-thought. Yes, it does a good job of showing me during the season, but the off-season is another matter.

3: Goalies need to fatigue, bottom line. There's no purpose for a back up goalie, right now, aside from insurance in case of injury (which I've only ever had due to simming). It's just silly for a goalie to play every single game.
Could anyone answer these questions/requests? Have they been met at all, or not so much?

                Thanks!

For your first and third no. Goalie fatigue needs to be in the game. It was in 07 and I'm not sure why it went away. However CPU DOES play backup goalies as well.

Goalie fatigue is slightly overrated, look at the handful of guys who play 70+ in a year, and bonafide starters will play every game in the playoffs, including occasional back to backs.

As long as the CPU gets the backup in I don't think its a big deal.

Re: NHL 12 "Be A GM" Mode Discussion Thread

First season I saw some weird standings mainly Edmonton making the playoffs and Vancouver. Before being annoyed I decided to look into goals for and goals against to see if they were actually good and bad that year.

Edmonton actually scored the 243 goals, 3rd in the West...but they gave up 258 also 3rd in the league. So they should have been worse, but they won a weak division with 91 pts...that kind of thing can happen.

With Vancouver it was pretty much the opposite. They gave up the 3rd fewest goals in the Westwith 216...but scored the 4th fewest with 214. They finished with 86 pts.

Now I can rationalize those standings and say Edmonton caught some breaks in close games while Vancouver didn't. But I want to know why Edmonton's offense exploded from the 193 they scored last year and Vancouver's collapsed from their 262.

Well Eberle developed and scored 11 more goals than last season. A full season from Hemsky added 10 to his total. Gagner added 7. Horcoff added 10. Omark added 10. So that's 48 extra goals and pretty much all from young improving players or players finally being healthy.

In Vancouver, Kessler lost 9 goals, Daniel Sedin lost 13, Burrows missed 17 games and lost 12 goals, Marco Sturm played 76 games and scored just 7.

Now in the offseason the Canucks lost 14 goals from Erhoff.

Looking at the Canucks defense...it didn't do anything to replace that offense as it scored a total of 22 goals. And two of their top 6 defensemen scored 0 goals, including a Andrew Alberts managing to play 78 games without scoring a single point.

Great analysis jrp, lets hope thats a true to life precognition...

Overall standings dont bother me the way they do for some, except in extreme circumstances. If two or even three teams surprise per conference I'm cool with that. Its when Boston, Philly, Pitt and Washington finish out the playoffs in the same year that I'm annoyed.

Just posted this in the questions thread, but figured it would apply here too..

First off, Let me qualify this post by pointing out that I'm not a huge hockey guru. I do have a basic understanding of UFAs and RFAs and how that whole process works, but I really only keep up with my team, Tampa Bay. So I don't necessarily know a glaring roster issue when I see it.

But by all means, if someone can point out any red flags that I should be looking for, I'll be more than happy to check into it.

Also, I really haven't given BEAGM the time of day the last couple of year(mostly because of the terrible simmed stats..), so I'm not exactly up to date on what the big issues have been with the off seasons and the cpu's handling of its roster and free agents.

That being said, after completing a test off-season with a GM mode on the hardest difficulty, things look pretty good on the surface. Mostly older guys with a few younger guys with no AHL or NHL service time(undrafted FAs?) left in the pool toward of the start of the season. And it seems like most teams are offering a reasonable number of contracts/qualifying offers to their respective RFAs.

As far as the Game Informer review that started all of this BEAGM discussion goes, I'm not sure I'm seeing what they were. They mentioned top prospects like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rotting away in the AHL, but he isn't even in the roster yet... but maybe they were just using him as an example. Either way, I don't know other teams' prospects well enough to say definitively, but it sure doesn't look like there are many higher overall(80+) player in the AHL.

Unless someone brings something to my attention that I haven't yet noticed, I don't think I'm going to have much of an issue with the BEAGM mode this year. With much improved standings, stats, and injuries, it would appear to be passable for my not so lofty standards.

Attributes could definitely use a little diversity, but for now that seems to be a fairly minor issue.
