Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?

I'm just curious to what you guys think. If they do will it be worth it? Or should they let MS make the first move again?

Don't know if they will on won't, but they need to. They never really challenged for the crown in North America.

I agree, if Sony wants to win in NA then they need to get to market first and make the console priced on par with MS not above it.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

I agree with both of you. I think the key is price though. Sony CANNOT pull the stunt they did this gen pricing it at $600. (I think thats what it was.) I know the tech will be expensive but if they want sales its gotta be around $400 or less.

It was. With tax it would have been close to around $700. They really can't do that. The main reason why MS won was because when the 360 first came out it was 399 I believe.

Then not only that, they jumped the gun on the price change so when Sony finally dropped it down to $399, the 360 was already at a $199-$299 price change.

Not only that, but the lack of quality games for the PS3 early in it's cycle pretty much killed it.

I still can't believe I forked over $710 on that cold November morning all for a PS3 and Madden 07 lol! Shame on me. That'll never happen again. I think $399 is the perfect price point for a new console. MS price their consoles perfectly at release. That is what made the difference. The PS2 was priced at $299 out of the gate and it was way ahead of its time. We all know what happened after that.

Don't care, whichever system has the most of my friends on and the better games is the one I will own. Was more of a PS2 gamer last gen and an Xbox 360 gamer this gen. If PS4 is the better system next game for me, that's what I'll have, otherwise it'll be the next Xbox.

Haha, I know what you mean.

                I bought a 360 because of this...

                <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/02ajPL3Kna4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Only to have two of them RROD after about a six months.

By that time the PS3 was just coming out, so I spent mad $$$ on that. I bought three games with it. Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter, and Resistance: Fall of Man. That was a pretty hefty purchase,

Monday I will be getting a new PS3 for $300. SMH.

I tell myself I won't get a new console during week one. But, I know I will be there somehow.

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?

Since going HD with all these shaders, etc... I think holding off on day one purchases next gen can be warranted. Due to HD and shaders giving these consoles longer legs than last gen.

The Show will be more polished for '12 and '13, etc... so I think I can wait a year before the next Xbox and PS4 gets purchased.

But then again, they will show some super awesome stuff, and I will be sweating to get one!

I know I was gonna hold off on the Vita for a bit, but after seeing the 10 minute Uncharted play through, I am getting it DAY ONE!!!

Price and whatever company gets out the gates first, will have a leg up. IMO. Doesn't matter what company it is, I will be buying it day 1. I'm a sucker for new tech.
I am the lesson after the fall.

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?

I prefer the MS ecosystem and controllers, but to answer the OP it really depends on what kind of punch it is. If Sony beats them to market with a jab and MS comes a season later with an uppercut it wont matter. They've got to be hesitant making a bleeding edge console after the debacle with the PS3s launch and how long it took for them to make money (I'm not sure the platform will ever be profitable?). This could lead to them making something underpowered for a next gen system but more cost effective, vs MS bringing something much more powerful, and continue to use an architecture that is more compatible to porting, PC games, etc, and from a company willing to eat a loss in the short term.

In the end, I am not sure what I prefer.

Re: Will Sony beat MS to the punch next gen?

I will wait to get a new console. I will get it once I feel there isnt any problems with the consoles. I got the PS3 because of free Online, always was a Sony guy, and Exclusive games.
I will get the console that offers the most features, exclusive games. Hopefully graphics are similar for consoles, and not great for one and jagged-fulled one. And Hopefully Controllers are durable and not more expensive than it is now.
I will wait until whatever system has a good amount amount of hardcore games. I wont get a console with only a few games out. Hopefully sports game dont completely start over. I would like them to take alot from their last game and expand on that. Mainly because the 1st game of the console isnt that great because they are just getting started. So, I would love to see Sports games basically take most of their features into the new game and expand on them and just focus on graphics and gameplay.

I cant wait they can expand on next-gen console games. With bigger RAM, disc space, and more memory, you can only imagine. Will all/most Sports games include Real-Time Physics and Presentation? Will Graphics look almost real-life like? Will they make games more interactive(more vitural)?
I cant wait to see how it all unfolds.

It all depends if Sony gets 3rd party support and their 3rd party games looks as good as their 1st party games. That was the biggest problem with Sony this generation.

Games made by Sony was GREAT, games they were multi-platformed didn't look as great.

I mean honestly, my friends that own a PS3 only have The Show and Unchartered series. They use it more as a blu-ray player then a gaming system. 99% of their games they play on the 360.

Also.......360 party chat killed PS3 as well.

Friends and I used our 360s for party chat while we played Red Dead Redemption on PS3, lol.

Really easy to overlook innovations like party chat, gamer cards, achievements.

I'll never forget spending almost $650 the week of release for the 60gb and then another $65 for Resistance. The messed up thing is that I didn't even really play the PS3 much in the first year and probably should have just waited it out. Next time, I plan to try and wait it out a little bit......not willing to spend more than $400 for a new console.

Sony was still ok launching a year later, it's the $499 and $599 price points that did them in. Now that the economy is in the toilet, if they decide in 2013 to release new hardware, hopefully these things are reasonably priced all around.

Another thing is that I kind of do not have faith in Sony to migrate our trophies, etc. over to the new system. They can't even update their own web site with the latest games we have played since last Fall. Oh well, we shall see how things turn out.
