Scouting/Contracts/Draft Picks

I know there has been a lot of talk about the scouting, player potential and late round sleepers. I personally love that you can find gems later in the draft and obviously it happens in the NFL all the time.

The issue I have is that while individually the ideas are good...it doesn't play out as it should.

Sleepers - I think the problem is you can find out how good a player is exactly. Sure you can only do this with 5 players but as an example i did a full scout on a 3rd round RB who ended up being 86 overall with A potential. I ended up drafting him in the 2nd round and signed him for 7 years at low money which wouldn't happen. I'm not sure yet if he'll hold out down the road, if he does, it would make this a little more realistic.

Trading Picks - I think current draft picks have good value associated with them. Unfortunately future picks have no value. If you have the #1 overall pick you would have the ability to trade down 1 spot continuously to the team drafting behind you and in the process acquire the ENTIRE 1st and 2nd round of next year's draft.

I love the direction madden is going with some of the franchise features but it seems a lot of work is still needed.

Being able to sign an 86 with an A pot in the second round for low money is just a reward for you doing proper or lucky scouting. It can easily work the other way. I scouted a HB fully and this guy was a beast in all respects. He was projected in the first and I figured I could get him after a 6-10 season that earned me the 8th overall pick. Well wouldn't you know it Denver grabs him in the 7th slot right before me. Now I am hung because I did not resign Benson nor Scott so all I had in my backfield was Noel Devine and Brandon Jacobs that I had signed as my 3rd down and goal line backs.

There is another HB that I had scouted that had fantastic stats across the board but I hadn't fully scouted him to get his overall and pot. I end up rolling the dice and taking him and so far while not a bust, because he is very good (avg approx 90 yards/game in a three back rotation) he cant stay on the field and is going to be a cap anchor for me since I went overboard trying to lock him up long term.

So instead of having a gorgeous backfield with two support guys signed for two years and a powerhouse signed for 5 I have an injury prone one injury away paperweight locked up for 5 years and heavy money, a second year that is undersized now that he is forced to carry a heavy load during injuries and an approaching over the hill thumper getting much more PT than I wanted.

Only part of your example that would not happen is a rookie 2nd round pick signing a rookie contract for 7 years. Teams fine guys in later rounds but in all cases they get deals of less than 4 years and lower money because they are drafted later.

I think my issue is that i knew the guy was 86 overall with A potential. There are sleepers in the NFL every year and some teams do a better job scouting them than others. The problem is there is still luck involved. In my case the luck was that i scouted the right guy (so maybe that's good enough) but before i drafted him i knew he was 86 overall with A potential so there was no downside to a long contract.

Scouting and the draft are a lot of fun and something I look forward too. You definitely need to do your homework on players.

I like getting those draft picks (RD 4-7) who are OVR 70-80 and potential C-D who end up panning out. You need to invest two or three years to develop them but their progression jumps from using them throughout the year.

I have had some of those players turn into OVR 90+

Really? Are you doing this without editing? Just through playing time?

The only thing you can really do to make offseason activities challenging is to to just not do things CPU teams don't. such as signing late round gem to 7years for real cheap and all.

the only way that madden will ever be able to make this aspect "more real" is if the actually implement variable scouting...

the problem isn't that you see and 86 with A potential, but rather, the problem is that you know he is an 86 with A potential.

with variable scouting, a player who your scout swears up and down will turn into the next Tom Brady, might actually turn into the next Josh Heupel (this would make hiring quality scouting important).

but even the best scouts are not always correct, of course. hopefully madden will get to this point some day... but this type of realism would probably tick off a lot of people. maybe madden could have the option to turn on/off variable scouting...
