    Odd Framerate Issue?

I've had the game for a couple of days now, and I've loved it so far, but I'm having strange (what I think are) framerate issues. I have a pretty good rig (quad core i7 920, 12gb ram, ATI 6950) and thought the game would run fine (as it should because my computer exceeds the recommend specs by a bit), but I've noticed that at certain times in the game the framerate seems to slow down. I thought I'd be able to chalk that up to my specs not being high enough for whatever reason, so I ran fraps, and it's reporting that the fps is consistently over 100 (usually around the 105 to 110 range) without vsync and with vsync at a consistent 60 (as usual). I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I'm not even sure if it's a framerate issue - My computer doesn't slow down or anything, it just as though the player animations are choppy. I haven't heard about anyone else having the same issues so I guess I'm just taking a stab in the dark to see if anyone else has the same issue or has had the issue in a past nba 2k game and might have a remedy for it.

I notice that on some of the closeup "cutscenes" like after made baskets the players sometimes look like they are "shaking" back and forth a bit...that's the main thing I see...

Before my copy stopped working altogether I was running into the same issue. FRAPS was telling me that it was running at a rock steady 60fps but the game would become choppy a few times per quarter. Lowering settings did nothing to alleviate this.

I think it just might not be optimised that well to be honest.

Same here, I've maxed the settings and get 80fps on the benchmark but during transitions it sometimes gets choppy. There are some games where I have no issues so there could be some sort of variable.

(Sigh) I hope someone comes up with a solution for this. 2k is notorious for not releasing patches quickly... especially for pc. I'm really tempted to buy the 360 and wait it out for the pc patch just so I can play without getting annoyed about the choppiness (the game is that good). If anyone else runs into this issue, please post it in this thread - I have a hard time believing there's only a few of us having this issue.

Guys on the steam forums are saying that disabling AA fixes this. But then you get screen tear. Pick your poison I suppose.

Maybe you can deactivate AA ingame and force it via the driver

Yeah, I've got the problem too. As soon as my little one goes to sleep I'm going to try to do it within the CP of the videocard. I'm tired of the jumpiness. I've got it too, and I've got the rig to run it easily as well.

                  Re: Odd Framerate Issue?

Yeah, the in-game VSync doesn't seem to work that well, making the game choppy if it's turned on. And the alternative might be worse, with Vsync off the screen tearing is brutal, as with most games. Even trying to enable VSync through your drivers doesn't work either, because that usually only relates to OpenGL (you can tell because the in-game benchmark will still show your full FPS instead of 60)

I don't have time to write up a detailed explanation for it, but google something called D3DOverrider - it's a utility included with a tweaking program called RivaTuner. It basically forces 60 FPS in Direct3D games (like 2k12), smoothing out the game, at least on my system.

Two things about it though - I haven't seen a way to close it aside from the task manager (ctrl-alt-del), and don't bother with it if you're benchmarking under 60 FPS normally - it won't make anything faster.

I can confirm that with my 5770 it is MUCH smoother enabling AA in the CP and turning it off in-game...

I just went and downloaded some new drivers and a new version of Catalyst Control Center... set the anti-aliasing to 8x in the CCC dashboard, and Triple Buffering. Started the game, removed the in game AA... and man... I thought the game looked better before. The way the videocard detects edges and smooths... just absolutely beautiful. No more stuttering, no tearing, no jaggies at all.

Nice! I'm going to try doing Anti-Aliasing through CCC and using that tool bcruise mentioned. I'm glad we shed more light on the issue. As always, it'd be awesome if people kept posting if they have anymore issues or solutions for the micro-stuttering animations.

Just tried a combination of using D3Doverrider and AA 8x using CCC, and that seems to have minimized the stuttering issue . Whatever crazy voodoo that tool does seems to have done the trick, as I can play the game (mostly) without any issues. I notice every once in a while that the the game still stutters, but it's much less noticeable and doesn't happened nearly as often. It's not a perfect solution, but I'll take it. Hopefully 2k addresses this if/when they patch the game. Anyway, Thanks bcruise!!! You just saved me from hours/weeks/months of frustration.

I forced V-Sync and anti aliasing through my Nvidia GT555m and the stuttering is mostly gone. It's only choppy on replays now, no big deal.

Now I just need a decent shadow mod and this game will be complete!

Man, I tried so many options by Googling and I finally got my game to play decently by putting NBA 2K12 on the lowest in-game resolution setting and then lowering the resolution of my monitor to compensate. I also use Game Booster 3 as well. It's been a long three days and I finally played my first full 12-minute quarter game today. Lost to Boston with L.A., 94-90, in an awesome game.

For those of you still having lag issues or issues where the game runs fine and then lags (which is what happened to me), a lower resolution both in-game and on your monitor might be a possible solution. I know that isn't the popular option but it was what solved my problem.
