The Fifth Down: 5 Wide - No Punt Offensive Attack of Kevin Kelley

Memphis Hires High School Offensive Mastermind Kevin Kelley of Pulaski Academy High School in Little Rock, AR

MEMPHIS - University of Memphis Athletic Director RC Johnson announced today that the school has hired Kevin Kelley to become the new offensive corodinator.

"It brings me great pride and pleasure to announce that Coach Kevin Kelley, the innovator of the No Punt "Fifth Down" ideology is going to become part
of the Memphis Tigers family serving as our new Offensive Coordinator," he said. "Coach Kelley's offensive prowess one him multiple state championships in the State of Arkansas at Pulaski Academy, and we are very excited to bring this exciting brand of football to our University."

38-year old Coach Kevin Kelley comes from Pulaski Academy a private high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, which is regarded one of the state's premier's high school powers, where he has served as the head coach for over 8 seasons. He is most famous for his philosophy of the "Fifth down" or No punt game plan. According to Coach Kelley's statistics, when a team punts from near its end zone, the opponent will take possession inside the 40-yard line and will then score a touchdown 77 percent of the time. If it recovers on downs inside the 10, it will score a touchdown 92 percent of the time. "So (forsaking) a punt, you give your offense a chance to stay on the field,"he said. "And if you miss, the odds of the other team scoring only increase 15 percent. It's like someone said, (Punting) is what you do on fourth down, and everyone did it without asking why."

In one game, he on sided kicked and never punted first four possessions and his team scored 29 points before the opposition ever touched the football.

"I believe in Coach Kelley's philosophy and it may frustrate some fans if he executes this philosophy in critical moments of the game and also the fact that he only has high school football coach experience, but I was amazed by Coach Kelley's statistics, research on the fourth down philosophy. He was head and shoulders above any other offensive minded coach. He made the decision easy."

Coach Kelley is also known for his open spread style. "We are going to mix up the offense and confuse the opposition, we will run out of 5 wide sets, and we will throw the ball deep and stretch the defense out and wear them down. I believe in the more points you can score, the less the defense has to work. Points is the name of the game, not time of possession.

"I believe in my system and I believe we can make it work at Memphis and I believe we can contend for a Conference USA Championship. We will work hard and we will be disciplined and fast. Our offense will be a monster to stop and defensive coordinators will have nightmares preparing for the thought of defending a fourth down."

The Tigers will open season against Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Memphis is no cupcake of a challenge. One of the hardest jobs in the business. Good luck sir. Recruiting will be quite difficult and hardly rewarding early on. Interested in seeing how things go.

Since I am just OC I won't be able to call an onside kick. I will implement that when I get a a HC gig. I will keep track on my no punt success as well and prove Coach Kelley theory correct. This dynasty will kickoff this weekend with mu first two games!
