Jan. 9, Riverside CA - UC Riverside bounced back after an opening loss to Cal Poly with a 97-76 dumping of UC Irvine, 96-76. It took the Big West champions a whole first half before its defense could sort out a tough Anteaters inside presence. The Anteaters succumbed to a total of 21 turnovers while the Highlanders unleashed a balanced offensive attack.

Bryan Bradley led four other Highlanders in double-figures with a game high 20 points. Brad Davis was effective against prized rookie Butch Sherman at the post finishing a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. John-Michael Gross came from the bench to add 14 markers while Lance Worley and backup forward Adrian Beeler had 12 and 11 respectively. Sherman led the Anteaters with 19 points while Steven Finley and Anthony Jordan had 17 each.

On January 11, the Highlanders gun for its second straight victory against the winless Pacific Tigers (0-3) at the Student Recreation Center. The jampacked playdate will commence with the conference leading Cal Poly Mustangs (3-0) taking on the UC Irvine Anteaters (2-1) at the Thunderdome. The Cal State Fullerton Titans (2-1) will host the Long Beach State 49ers (1-1) at the Mott Gymnasium while the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (0-2) aim for a survival match on the road against the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-1) at the Matadome.

UC RIVERSIDE WINS ANEW AS PACIFIC SINKS DEEPER
Highlanders buck Azubuike’s 30 point performance

Jan. 11, Riverside CA - UC Riverside won its second straight after an opening conference loss to Cal Poly with an easy 76-64 victory at the expense of Pacific. The Highlanders led 24 points during the halftime break, 50-26, before Coach Raymond Rose rested his starters and allowed his second stringers to take over.

The loss, the Tigers’ fourth straight setback, put to naught the 30-point performance of Smush Azubuike. Azubuike was an impeccable 7 of 8 from the field, including 4 treys, and 12 of 14 from the line. The Highlanders were paced by Bryan Bradley, who only needed 14 minutes to score his 20 points while Adrian Beeler came out of the bench and picked up a game high 10 rebounds.

CAL POLY DOWNS LONG BEACH STATE, 94-87, FOR WIN NO. 5
Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside stay close

Jan. 16 Irvine CA – Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State, 94-87, to remain the only unbeaten team in Big West after 5 games. The Mustangs used their firepower to overcome a tough 49er squad, which kept coming back preventing a lead that never went double-digits.

Cal Poly had 10 three-pointers in the game led by the 4 treys of senior Dwight Dupre, who top scored with 23 points. Akida Shimokawa, in his best Big West game, and Emanuel Paschel came from the bench to chip in 20 and 13 points respectively. Quincy Lawson paced four other 49ers in double-figures with 15 points.

In an earlier game, Cal State Fullerton nipped a listless UC Davis team, 81-68, to keep abreast with Cal Poly. The Titans employed their usual tough defense to keep the Aggies away from mounting any challenge. Diondre Wood led a balanced offensive attack which saw five Titans in double-figures with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Todd Benjamin came off the bench to likewise score 14 markers while Big West scoring leader Miles Marsh chipped in 11. Christian Barnard was the high-point man in the game with 17 points for the underachieving Aggies.

Brad Davis had a game high 16 rebounds but it was Mark Montalvo, who went toe-to-toe against bull-strong Jefferson Li with a double-double 12 points and 11 rebounds, that was the big difference. Point guard Christian Powe led the Highlanders with 13 points with Bryan Bradley contributing 11. Greg Armstrong had a game high 15 points for the Gauchos with 10 apiece coming from Deantoine Bishop and Li, who also picked up 10 caroms for his own double-double.

It was the Tigers 5th straight setback while the Anteaters went over .500 thanks to the inspired performance by backup center Lloyd O’Connell. O’Connell shot a career best 22 points and grabbed a team high 9 rebounds. Derek Fleming contributed 13 while Butch Sherman and Anthony Jordan added 12 apiece. Walter Detrick was the only Tiger in double figures with 13 points while Kyle Wiggins had a game high 12 rebounds.

In the second game, UC Riverside racked up its fourth straight after an opening conference loss to Cal Poly with a comfortable 81-68 win against Long Beach State. The pressing Highlanders defense paved the way for 23 times turnovers despite being outrebounded 26-30. Christian Powe led the Highlanders scoring for the second straight game with 16 points. Brad Davis and Bryan Bradley, who was a miserable 5 of 16, contributed 12 apiece while Lance Worley added 11. Shawn Madera led the 49ers with 13 points while Goran Vojinovic and Quincy Lawson had 12 and 11 respectively.

Meanwhile UCR Coach Raymond Rose happily announced that Ramon Meyers will resume practice in two days time and should be ready to play when the Highlanders meet arch-rival the UC Davis Aggies on January 25. Meyers broke an ankle in a game against the Loyola-Marymount Lions last December 16 and has missed action since.

Josh Dean hit a go-ahead trey with 20 seconds left. Pedro Ruffin gave the lead back to the Matadors on two free throws and after Oscar Enzweiler stole the inbound pass Chris Farley turned from goat to hero with a defensive block setting the Aggies up with 42 seconds remaining. Enzweiler would eventually throw the game away with a wayward pass with no time running on the shot clock after the Aggies mounted one last defensive stand.

The Aggies had 28 turnovers allowing the Matadors to come back from ten points down going to the final five minutes. Dean paced the Aggies with 16 points. Ron Ramelli contributed 13 while Buster Mathis grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. Alexis Hernandez was the game high scorer with 25 points, including 5 treys, while Alfonse Malone had 15 for the Matadors. Tarick Hoskin came out of injury and added 12 markers, 7 of them at the height of the Matadors rally.

It was win no. 6 for Cal Poly this time at the expense of winless UC Santa Barbara, 97-80. The Gauchos for the most part of the first half matched the Mustangs’ firepower losing 45-51 at halftime. But the Mustangs went relentless at the resumption of play while the Gauchos shot blanks. Only eight players scored for the Mustangs but the bench points were very revealing, 35-15. Chad Neverett came from the bench and scored 24 points. Tony Vasquez was the high point man though with 28 for the Mustangs while Dwight Dupre contributed a double-double 10 markers and 10 assists. Greg Armstrong led the Gauchos with 24 points while Jefferson Li finished with a double-double 10 points and a game high 13 rebounds.

CAL POLY ESCAPES UPSET AXE, SHADES UC DAVIS IN OT
Dwight Dupre stands tallest with 29 points for the Mustangs

Jan. 22, Irvine CA - Cal Poly escaped a close call against revitalized UC Aggies winning 88-82 in overtime. The Aggies, who last week stopped Cal State Northridge’s 3-game win run, engaged the Mustangs in a intense defensive match that had all but one Cal Poly gunslingers shoot blanks. The lone shooter was Dwight Dupre. Dupre shot 6 points early in extra time that gave the Mustangs a 10-3 run and a 7-point cushion. The Mustangs began missing and so did the Aggies.

UC Davis were ahead by 2 going into the final minute of regulation but Chris Farley missed twice, first was a hurried three-pointer and another a side jumper from a up close. Tony Vasquez, who was invisible from the field, then cooly sank 2 free shots with 2 seconds left to force the extension. Five minutes later, Vasquez sealed the game with four straight free throws.

Dupre shot a game high 29 points to pace the Mustangs, who now won 7 straight and 12 overall. Dwight Smalls had a double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds while Chad Neverett added 10 markers. Josh Dean led five other Aggies in double-figures with 16 points. Buster Mathis had his double-double 13 points and a prodigious 16 rebounds while Farley and backup center Omar Mbah a Moute contributed 13 apiece.
