Considering Switching from 360 to PS3

The XBox died, and it's going to cost me $100-$150 to get it fixed. I'm seriously considering switching to the PS3, primarily for the chance to play MLB The Show.

So a few questions for you PS3 owners...
    • What should I know about it? Does it have rechargeable controllers like the ones available for the 360? I know that WiFi is built in and the Blu Ray is in there. But what else?
    • Does it come with a HDMI or component cable?
    • Is the PSN still free?
    • Is it backwards compatible? Can I play my old PS2 games on it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Neither

Yes, although they have launched a pay service that gives access to certain discounts and offers though I couldn't tell you any more..

PS2 backward compatibility has been phased out unless you get an older model. PS1 games still play I believe.
I tried to give the best info I could from memory. FWIW, I sold my PS3 yesterday and went 360 only. Nothing wrong with the system itself but all I play are games that are common to both and I found I was pretty much only using my 360 anyway. I will say though that as far as exclusives go, I'd give the PS3 the nod.

      To answer your questions:

      - The controllers are rechargeable out of the box.

      - It does not come with an HDMI or component cable.

      - The PSN is still free, but there is a PlayStation Plus service that gives you some discounts on downloads and some other bonus stuff like cloud saving.

      - You can't play your PS2 games on anything but the launch consoles; they removed that feature early on.

      Some other things to consider:

      - The PS3 doesn't upscale 720P games to 1080P like the 360 does.

      - Trophies were added after the PS3 launched, so every game doesn't have them like every game has Achievements on the 360.

      - The PS3 doesn't have cross game chat like the 360 does.

      - Downloads seem to go much slower on the PS3.

      - As a sports gamer, I find that everything EA makes is better on 360... smoother framerates being the big one.

Unless you're playing a really old game, then it will have trophies.

I enjoy sports games more on my PS3 + the PS3 exclusives are unbeatable.

Uncharted Series, LBP, The Show, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance 1-3 , Killzone 2-3, inFamous 1-2, Heavy Rain, God of War3, and Twisted Metal (coming this month) are all solid games.

I have both so here goes:
Online edge IMO still goes to 360. LIVE is simply better overall package than PSN. Although being a PS Plus member has some great game deals.
Everyone else already answered the other stuff.
Both systems have thier own good exclusives so really in the end you should just see what system has the games you like the most. For sports its 360 EXCEPT for baseball as MLB The Show is second to none and the reason I own a PS3.
If you owning an XBOX still has you asking about switching to PS3 Id say the 360 doesnt have anything you'd miss so no harm in going the PS3 route this go round. You'll love The Show

Trophies were implemented July 2008, all games before that didn't have them unless a developer went back to patch them in. I think in fall 2008 is when they became mandatory for all games.

I prefer the 360 over the PS3, but... The Show is an excellent game and the main reason I got a PS3. Is the game worth the price of a system, I don't think so, but if you are fed up with the 360 the PS3 is a fine machine to own.

Yep, so you're looking at almost 4 years of games being released with trophies + the ones they went back and patched..

If you're a big enough baseball fan, It may be worth it just for The Show.

I like both my 360 and PS3, but I always seem to buy all my games for PS3.

I just made the switch from a 360 Slim to the PS3 myself--mainly for The Show but also because of the upcoming PS Vita launch.

The Vita will revolutionize console for those of us whose jobs require travel. Being able to play your franchise/career modes on the Vita and swap via cloud to the PS3 is an AMAZING feature.

That's what I just did. I bought MW3 to pass the time until March 6th gets here. I can honestly say that I haven't even booted up my 360 in a good month. I've been having a blast on PS3. Plus, a lot of my friends have the PS3, so that works out in my favor.

It really is and although I already get pretty far into my franchises.....I have a feeling I'm going to double the amount of years I usually reach into a particular franchise in The Show.
I'm sure it will translate to a similar plus in other games....

I made the switch from the 360 to the PS3 on January 20th and couldnt be happier!
I did it for too reasons. The main reason was i am a huge baseball fan and wanted to be able to play the Show. And 2 was my future step son was always borrowing my 360 so I let him have it and i purchased a PS3.
Not that it matters to most but I can tell you my 4 year old daughter loves the PS3. We have already downloaded a bunch of games of the PS Network. She loves Joe Danger and Angry Birds and we cant wait to get the Simpsons Arcade game. I never once downloaded a game onto my 360.
Again I couldnt be happier with the swtich!

I switched to PS3 because I was also tired of my 360 breaking down every year. In the three years I had one, it broke down each year with red rings. XBOX Live and the 360 controllers are awesome, but reliability is better for me and since I'm not really an online gamer the PS3 is a perfect fit. Plus I wanted Blu Rays and the PS3 controllers charge faster.

Re: Considering Switching from 360 to PS3

I recently purchased a PS3 (and the Uncharted Series) for 150 dollars flat from a guy who won one at work and would rather buy a second X-Box than to have one of each (his loss).

I bought it because the price was right, but also because I have been planning on buying the Vita since before it was the Vita and like the idea of playing a sports game on the TV, then picking it up on the go (I travel a lot).

I think PS3 has better exclusives; but it's really about preference. I don't like 1st person shooters (Halo) and can't stand baseball (The Show), so take that for what it's worth.

As far as user interface goes, ease of navigation, layout, social features, etc. Live has PSN beat by a mile and continues to improve.

I LOVE how easy it is to download media on the PS3 (no ripping CD's, you can copy .mp3 files directly to the system, and watch .avi movies... you can do the latter on a 360, but need to watch off a flash drive).

Anyway, as the immortal Big Tymers once said...

"If your ho, needs an operation, and you need to get your car painted, f- the ho, paint the car! Paint the ho with the car!"

LOL. If I wasn't lucky enough to paint the ho with the car (i.e. have both), I'd go 360. By the way, the new 360 has never broken down on me once.

This. Not only because of travel hours either. I'm a compulsive multi-tasker, so I can definitely see me doing speed drills during Raw Divas matches and whatnot (#pleasemake2KfortheVita).
