Detroit went into the 2012 Entry Draft armed with 3 1st rd picks they acquired prior to the season.
Recap of the how the extra picks were acquired plus 1 other trade:
Jiri Hudler traded to Colorado for 1st rd pick
Brad Stuart traded to Anaheim for 1st rd pick
Todd Bertuzzi traded to Minnesota for 3rd pick and Matt Kassian

At the draft Detroit would package all 3 picks in an offer to Colorado for the 1st overall pick. Colorado would accept that offer and Detroit would get the 1st pick while Colorado would get the 22nd, 25th and 29th picks.

With the 1st overall pick Detroit would take Mikhail Grigorenko to give them a top end prospect at the center position. "We felt we had good depth on the outside with Tatar, Nyquist currently with the Wings and Jurco, Pulkkinen and Tvrdon coming up." Gm Ken Holland said about the pick.

Detroit has plenty of centers but only one is seen as a top 6 forward, Calle Jarnkrok, after that they have centers who look to be more suited for the bottom end of the lineup.

            DETROIT FREE AGENT PERIOD
Detroit, MI- NHL entry draft completed and the Wings were able to add some important pecies to their team. Now they move onto free agency. The Wings had a few very important players that needed new contracts.

The 1st puzzle to fall was that Nicklas Lidstrom will return for at least 1 more season as a Red Wing. He signed a 1 yr contract to contuine playing. Once Lidstrom signed everything else started.

After Detroit took care of their own free agents they went into the market looking to add a couple players. They put out offers to a couple RFA’s from other teams but those offers were matched. They did bring in 2 UFA in Lee Stempniak and Michal Handzus.

Justin Adbelkader and Ty Conklin were both released/allowed to hit the free agent market. Conklin was the Wings backup but didn’t have a great season. With the addition of Kassian who impressed the team staff, Abdelkader found himself on the outside.

            Re-Signed:
Nicklas Lidstrom, Nicklas Kronwall, Darren Helm, Chris Conner, Tomas Tatar, Matt Kassian, Kyle Quincey

            Released:
            Justin Abdelkader, Ty Conklin

            Signed Entry Level Contract:
            Calle Jarnkrok(A-/B/B), Mikhal Grigorenko(A-/B/A-), Riley Sheahan(C/C/B-), Teemu Pulkkinen(B/C/B-), Alexi Marchenko(C/B-/C), Petr Mrazek(C/A-/A)

            Additions:
            Lee Stempnaik, Michal Handzus

Zetterberg is having an amazing season, props to him. Love the red wings, play with skill. Why can't it be The Canucks V Red Wings this winter classic?

Well i was planning on doing updates every 10 games until end of the season. But i was watching playoff hockey and i wanted to get into the playoffs in my chise LOL. So i simmed to the playoffs. Next couple post will be the end of season stats and then playoff match ups.

So lets begin with and update on the team from my last update. The Wings signed a couple players to play for Grand Rapids to give them depth.

Dmen J. Tinordi, J. Lehtivouri and J. Hendry would sign and play in GR.

Detroit would also lose important players leading up to the trade deadline.
1st was Gustav Nyquist who was hurt on Feb. 17th and would be out for 10 weeks. Next was Nicklas Lidstrom hurt on march 5th and was schedule to return early May.

Detroit also made a trade prior to the trade deadline. Sending Logan Pyett and 2013 1st rd pick to Edmonton for their 2013 1st rd pick.
