Often times sports stars transcend to a plane of popularity in their own countries higher than those more deserving. But Demitra meant more to Slovakia, and its national hockey team than most. Demitra was the kind of guy who helped his country out fiscally, before himself. He was a hero to many and a friend to all. And what a gesture by Kopecky.
