First time buying an NHL game
I've never bought an NHL game before so I'm really pumped about NHL 13, it looks awesome. I don't really know any players aside from the Sharks, maybe like 5, but I'll get to know players through the game.Last edited by CaliDude916; 07-03-2012, 10:24 PM.Tags: None -
Re: First time buying an NHL game
Playing the video game is a great way to become a fan of the sport. Like me with FIFA a few years ago. I played the video game, started learning players and teams, and now I consider myself a soccer fan.
You will have a blast with NHL 13

That's cool.
Yeah, I think you picked a good year to start, NHL '13 should be good.Comment

I'm buying FIFA this year too. It's the same with Hockey, I only know a handful of players, but will learn names through the game.Comment

Re: First time buying an NHL game
Welcome! My first ever NHL game was 10. Currently I have 11. Will probably move on to 13.
Like you I'm only familiar with the big name players. So my drafts and FA moves probably suck, lol. But I don't care so long as my CAT makes the playoffs! ( which they've done twice thus far)Comment

Re: First time buying an NHL game
I'm hopping on this train also! I don't think I've played an NHL game since 2003 or so...
Looking forward to it! I'm a huge fan of the online league style play, so I'll definitely be looking to join up with one... I'm still fairly new to these forums, so hopefully I can find a spot!Comment

Re: First time buying an NHL game
As a sports fan, but not one that follows hockey, ive been hearing alot of good things about this franchise over the years.
my question is does the game in some form or fashion teach people who dont really know anything intricate about the sport how to actually understand the sport? how to play the sport the right way, instead of just skating around and flinging the puck everywhere?
lasty 4 someone such as myself is it be better to play the superstar mode (or whatever its called) or play in the franchise mode controlling everything. I doubt id would be going online anytime soon.
this game intrigues me so your response are very valuable to me. and thanks.Through Holy Union God Lives Inside For Everyone

Re: First time buying an NHL game
Man I totally agree! For ages I wanted to learn the rules of American Football so I could watch it (I'm English) and I bought Madden 07 didn't get hardcore until Madden 10 but now I'm a diehard Patriots fan. Same with NBA, I started out playing Live and then heard 2K was better and more of a sim game. So I switched and now I love the Celtics. Same with NHL and I'm a Bruins fan. Gotta love my Boston sports teams!
But I wondered what is the better game? EA's NHL series or 2K's NHL series?
I've always played EA's NHL game since 06 didn't know whether I'm missing out. I mean, looking at NBA 2K the graphics and gameplay are unreal! Thoughts?Three Time Super Bowl Champions.

Re: First time buying an NHL game
NHL 2K10 was the last 2K hockey game. Many believe NHL 2K8 was the best hockey game on this generation (I'm not one of them), but the game definitely had its strengths. It has a very complicated and robust control scheme (one of the reasons it's loved by hardcores yet did poorly in reviews), great physics and momentum, pretty terrible graphics and player models, and shaky online play (if you even can get online anymore, IDK). The game also apparently played a lot better once you install custom sliders and wasn't as great out of the box.Man I totally agree! For someone who is new to hockey games, you want to go w/ EA NHL. It's a lot more user friendly out of the gate, the control scheme is intuitive and easy to master, and while the online community can at times be suspect, there are a ton of people playing and you will be able to find your niche, so to speak. Plus there are a lot more modes and features to try out in NHL 13 than there is left in NHL 2K8.
1. The game rewards legitimate play as long as you are playing someone who isn't resorting to cheese tactics or exploits. It's jut like any sports game, whether you have a money play in Madden that works too well or a dunk in NBA 2K that can't be stopped for some reason. If you're not going online, you don't have to worry about this though, and you will be rewarded against the CPU for playing smart, legitimate hockey.my question is does the game in some form or fashion teach people who dont really know anything intricate about the sport how to actually understand the sport? how to play the sport the right way, instead of just skating around and flinging the puck everywhere?

2. It's really up to your personal preference. Personally, I find position locking as one guy and playing with the CPU boring. I want to control everybody or be online playing team play where every skater (and goalie) is human controlled. There's really no reason you can't start both a Be A GM and Be a Pro and see which one you like better, then run with whichever career / playstyle you prefer.
You can also jump into practice mode when you get the game and run 5 on 0s if you want, just to familiarize yourself with the controls and timing, how to skate, shoot, etc.EA SPORTS Game Changer
