          2012-13 Nebraska Football Preview

Bo Pelini has a good job as the Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach. Taking over a 5-7 team Pelini has won at least 9 games four straight years. What remains to be see is if the Husker fans will be happy with just being good.

It's an interesting time for Husker fans. The team is in a new conference and the southeast has dominated the landscape in recent years. Can the Nebraska faithful reconcile memories of recent elite play with the reality of the present.

The mid-1990s Nebraska Cornhuskers were efficient and brutal, predictable and unstoppable, dazzling you with the option and taking your head off with the Blackshirts.

The early-2010s Cornhuskers, meanwhile, are solid. Good, even. But good is not elite.
Aside from the devastating 2007 season that got the Bill Callahan era labeled as an undebatable, miserable failure even though he had delivered a Big 12 North title the year before. Nebraska has never felt further away from the game's true elite.

The Cornhuskers have won either nine or 10 games in each of the last four seasons, they have a strong, fun offensive backfield, and they should once again have a deep, interesting defensive backfield.

Nebraska will absolutely be good in 2012 … but in Lincoln, there is little difference between good and terrible. It appears that only greatness matters.

Nebraska CB Mohammed Seisay puts a big hit on Eagles QB Cole Weeks

Huskers put hurt on Southern Miss.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Cornhuskers defense made an early statement in the first half of Saturday's season opener. By halftime the Southern Miss. was down to their third string quarterback thanks to the Blackshirts.

The Eagles offense was clearly crippled and the Huskers took advantage, winning easily 34-10.

Taylor Martinez showed what many Nebraska fans had been waiting to see, accurate passing. Martinez hit 14 of 17 pass attempts for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also carried the ball 10 times for 35 yards. It appeared Martinez made a concerted effort to stay with play to the second or third read, and it payed dividends in the Huskers pass game.

The offense as a whole got off to a slow start and first quarter ended with the teams at 3-3.

Nebraska dominated the 2nd quarter from the start scoring an early touchdown when Martinez hit Kyler Reed running down the seam from 29 yards out.

On the Eagles next possession second string QB Cole Weeks scrambled to his left and gained around 10 yards before taking a big hit and coughing the ball up. The ball squirted free from the pile where it was scooped up by Andrew Green who shook off a tackler and steamed 35 yards for the score.

Martinez closed out the half by hitting Quincy Enunwa for a 21 yard TD giving Nebraska a 24-3 lead at the break.

Mauro Bondi scored the only points of the third quarter on a 33 yard FG to make the score 27-3 entering the final quarter.

Brion Carnes came into relieve Martinez late in the game and hooked up with Jamal Turner on a third down slant the Turner turned into a 75 yard touchdown.

Southern Miss. did get a touchdown late when 3rd string QB Chris Campbell found Dominque Sullivan wide open on a blown coverage by Huskers 2nd team defense for a 42 yard score making the final score 34-10.

Rex Burkhead led the Huskers in rushing with 91 yards on 22 carries. Ameer Abdullah had 9 carries for just 21 yards.

Turner led the receivers with 4 catches for 97 yards and the one score. Tight end Ben Cotton caught 3 passes for 69 yards.

Next up for the Huskers is a trip to Los Angeles to face UCLA. The Bruins defeated the Rice Owls 30-10 in their opener.

                    Game Notes
Nebraska has faced the Bruins on 10 previous occasions, with the Huskers owning a 6-4 edge in the series between the two schools. UCLA captured the first three meetings, picking up victories in 1946, 1948 and 1972. The UCLA win in 1972 ended Nebraska’s 32-game unbeaten streak.

Since opening the series with three losses, Nebraska has won six of the past seven meetings between the two schools. Coach Tom Osborne picked up his first career victory against UCLA in 1973 in Lincoln, then added his 100th win against the Bruins in the next meeting in 1983.

Nebraska also won at UCLA in 1984, and in Lincoln in 1987, before the Bruins won at the Rose Bowl in 1988. The Huskers won the two most recent games in the series, a 14-13 road win in 1993 and a 49-21 win at Memorial Stadium in 1994.

Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez breaks free for a long gain against the Bruins

Nebraska narrowly escapes UCLA to move to 2-0

Los Angeles, CA. -- UCLA made things tough for Nebraska in their second game of the season, but the Huskers came through late in the game to escape with a 35-28 win.

Taylor Martinez was the biggest difference maker for Nebraska, passing for 175 yards, rushing for 215 yards and scoring 3 total touchdowns.

Rex Burkhead scored his first touchdown of the season to open the scoring Saturday. The Bruins answered quickly with Johnathan Franklin's 4 yard TD run that tied the score at 7-7.

Franklin would add another touchdown on a one yard run to give UCLA a 14-7 lead and put the Huskers behind for the first time this season. The Huskers drew even when Martinez found Tim Marlowe for an 11 yard score.

Bruins quarterback Kevin Prince would put his team back on top with a 46 yard touchdown pass to Ricky Marvray. Not to be out done Martinez hooked up with speedy receiver Kenny Bell for a 54 yard TD pass. The teams entered the locker rooms with the score knotted at 21-21.

Martinez continued to carry the load for the Huskers in the second half, his 44 yard TD run put Nebraska ahead 28-21 early in the third quarter. UCLA would answer once again with a 26 yard touchdown on a screen pass from Prince to Malcolm Jones.

As the fourth quarter started the score was tied at 28-28, it would remain that way until the final minutes when Burkhead notched his 2nd TD of the game from 3 yards out with 1:19 left to play.

Huskers safety P.J. Smith would put the final nail in the Bruins coffin with an interception in the final minute to secure the win 35-28.

Burkhead rushed for 103 yards to go with his 2 scores, he also led the team in receptions with 5 for 39 yards. Bell caught 4 passes for 69 yards, Quincy Enunwa also had 4 catches gaining 29 yards.

Daimion Stafford led the defense with 10 tackles, Smith added 7 tackles to his game ending pick. Linebacker Sean Fisher recorded 2 sacks and 5 total tackles, Chase Rome, Ciante Evans and Braylon Heard all had one sack each.

The Huskers return home next week and expect to have an easier time with the Arkansas State Red Wolves who are 1-1 after beating Memphis 34-19 Saturday.

I hope they don't keep it too close for comfort lol.

Taylor Martinez 25 rushes for 215 yards is impressive... I hope he can do that this fall!
