Rex Ryan: Stephen Hill not 'my pick'.

Jets’ draft recap:

1st Round: DE Quinton Coples, UNC
2nd Round: WR Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech
3rd Round: OLB Demario Davis, Arkansas St.
4th Round: Traded (Den - Tebow)
5th Round: Traded (Sea – 2nd Round pick)
6th Round: RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor & G Robert T. Griffin, Baylor
7th Round: SS Antonio Allen, South Carolina & WR Jordan White, Western Michigan

With the start of the 2012-2013 season just around the corner, the ever-vocal Head Coach of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan, has stirred up more controversy in the big apple, laying bare his surmounting disagreements with the front office. Ryan’s latest tirade began when asked how much he believed the newly drafted WR, Stephen Hill would contribute this season.

"Well, nothing told me he would (contribute)," Ryan told Don Banks of Sports Illustrated. "Nothing. When I saw the tape I was concerned. But Mike Tannenbaum (Jets’ GM) and all our scouts were adamant about this guy. They were adamant that this guy can do it. He can run all these routes, he had good hands and he's got 4.2 speed at 6-foot-5. He was the guy they all wanted, but honestly, when it came down to it, a wideout? Not my dream pick.”

Ryan went on to question the earlier decision making in the draft as well, claiming that he wanted the OLB/DE from Syracuse, Chandler Jones, who was selected five spots later by division rivals New England, rather than DE Quinton Coples out of UNC.

Combining the Coaches latest comments with the furore that continues to surround the Tim Tebow trade and the locker room issues that plagued the end of the 2011-2012 season, is it time to begin considering a major overhaul in New York? Despite their cross city rivals, the Giants, winning the Superbowl, the Jets are the team that continues to be prominently featured on the back page of the Times.

“That’s fine by us, they can keep selling papers and we’ll keep collecting rings.” A sentiment voiced by emerging superstar WR Victor Cruz and one surely shared by the rest of his World Champion team mates. With the contrast so stark between the two teams from the Big Apple, it might be time for Jets owner, Woody Johnson, to consider the long term direction of his football team.

Rex requested at Jets HQ for ‘Emergency’ Meeting.

Currently very little is known about the sudden ‘emergency’ meeting being called by Jets’ Owner Woody Johnson, other than both Head Coach, Rex Ryan, and GM, Mike Tannenbaum, have been taken by private plane to meet with Johnson at an undisclosed location. Remaining Jets executives have described the abrupt meeting as an open discourse concerning the immediate future and direction of the franchise.

Some were calling for removal of Ryan and Tannenbaum following the disastrous end to te 2011-2012 season with major locker room upheaval and division, however, until now they have both received unwavering support of Johnson. Recent comments released from Ryan concerning personnel movements, namely certain draft picks and the Tim Tebow trade, seemed to have spread the infectious locker room dissent into the front office, which is something that might have warranted this immediate attention from Johnson. Is this the shakeup New York fans have been clamouring for, or just another sign of a once proud franchise struggling to remain relevant?

Jets Cleaning House.

Just one day after Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum were whisked away for what was termed an ‘emergency’ meeting for the immediate future of the franchise, it has been announced by press release that owner, Woody Johnson, has terminated both the outspoken Rex Ryan and the ubiquitous Mike Tannenbaum. Neither Rex nor Mike were available for comment, though the statement released by the Jets explained that there was a widening gap in projected directions for the team. The question now remains; who will be chosen to right the sinking ship that is the Gang Green?

Jets Taking a Gamble

The New York Jets have announced the hiring of Tom Gamble, formerly the Director of Player Personnel for the San Francisco 49ers, as the new GM. With his 24 years of league experience, Gamble brings a wealth of knowledge and insight into the Jets organization. Some avid New York fans may remember that Gamble was the Defensive Assistant coach for the Jets during the ‘95-’96 season. A front office journeyman for many years, Gamble has worked for numerous teams, such as the Colts, Eagles, Panthers, and Ravens, before settling into the personnel department in San Francisco, where he was lauded for his insight into both the college and pro ranks. Previously considered to replace Al Davis in Oakland and a finalist for the Rams GM job this past offseason, Gamble seems to be the perfect fit coming from a 49ers team that has managed to completely reverse its fortunes in very little time. Gamble’s first key decision will be deciding on who to fill the large and loud shoes vacated by Rex Ryan.

There’s a New Sheriff in Town.

Fans of the Gang Green did not have to wait long for their new GM, Tom Gamble, to begin making his mark on the wayward Jets franchise. Today he has announced the hiring of Luke Mitchell as the new Head Coach of the Jets. Despite being a complete unknown to the everyday fan several league executives have applauded this move, labelling the 38 year-old as an ‘X’s and O’s whiz kid’.

Mitchell has spent time in both the college and pro ranks, most recently working with Coach Harbaugh and Coach Shaw at Stanford and prior to that as an assistant in Sean Payton’s in New Orleans. When reached for comment Sean Payton was not hesitant in airing his thought about the move; “I’m just glad I’m not in the league this year, ‘cause that young man is going to give his opposition some headaches.”

In his first press conference as the Jets’ Head Coach, Mitchell was not getting ahead of himself like his predecessor was inclined to, with no Super bowl promises or outbursts, Mitchell’s main message was; patience, which is not exactly what New York fans are known for. “If you give me time, I’ll give you a team that the city of New York can be proud of.” With his time in camp reduced and pre-season right around the corner, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this new coaching staff can have.
