How do you shut down outside runs?

    hey guys
i use the baltimore ravens D usually and I haven't really found some good defensive plays that stop the run, specifically outside runs.

anyone know good plays to stop the outside runs?

i always try to overload one side of the ball if i think there gonna try running outside on me works pretty good had a guy quit on me yesterday because thats all he was trying to do with redskins and i was stuffing him everytime for like 2-3 yard loses.

I like to spread the DL and maybe the LBs too. I might blitz one OLB (usually the weak side LB, so for the Ravens, that's usually Suggs).

OLBs have to hold the edge so Ray and McClain can get there, though sometimes you'll get the OLB free into the backfield, depends on how your DL does and what run/formation the offense is using. If that happens, at least slow down the back so your safety and ILB help can get there.

Speaking of safeties, they have a lot to do with it also. Consider bringing them down towards the box so they, too, can be in better position to react if the HB does get free or can come in faster in support. Safety blitzes can help as well. Pollard is the obvious choice for his hard hitting, but don't disregard Reed. Reed's got better awareness and if you've helped is PUR, he can be a mini-linebacker on those outside runs to his side. I usually don't as I'm a LB-is-supposed-to-stop-the-run type person, but he gets himself involved anyway, so it doesn't hurt to make him better at it if you're so inclined.

If you're also worried about the pass, plays where the OLBs are in flats zones can help. They'll flow outside towards their coverage assignments, but also be in potentially good shape to stop the run. If you have physical corners (I believe Smith is decent in run support - Webb...not so much), using flats zones (like the Cloud coverages - flip it so your best run supporter is in the flat zone - or Cover 2's where the CBs stay up, not the Sink varieties where the CB fall back to hook zones) can help.

i can say what i think should be important but it may not work in madden. prc/spd/bsh/tak/agi/acc.

for example my starting point is 2 man under from 3-4 even, (NT and LE shade strong side, MLBers over C and LG iirc), one of the MLBers is a spy. only dl are rushing. from there i can blitz one or more or change to hook etc. depends on your oline but with 49ers the 4 lbers are all good at following the rb. wish 3-4 odd had the same but that has MLB 2 in a hook and i prefer spy to hook especially with all these mobile qbs. i prefer 3-4 even because it helps the LE get pressure, spose i could shift left with odd. anyhoo thats what i do

Usually a base 4-3 cover 3 works well.. Umm 3-4 spread the linebackers and reblitz olbs

If you are getting beat to one side consistently you could playmaker prior to the snap to defend Run right or run left. Of course that can leave you vulnerable if you have guessed wrong.

Playmaker is a joke and most online leagues don't allow it.. Ur best bet is to use free or strong safety play zone and have guys in the box. Watch for the run and get him with ur safety if no one else catches him which they usually do..

Spread your LB, pinch your DL when you feel it's coming. User the MLB. If it does come, then use the MLB to contain the play back into your CPU OLB and DE. More effective doing this from a 3-4. a good user would look to cutback if you do this often and you'd be susceptible up the middle in a 4-3.

Re: How do you shut down outside runs?

Why wouldn't leagues allow the defensive commit? Makes no sense. I run to one side of the field a lot the first half of the football game and let them destroy my run. It's easy to counter. Use counter plays and run out of different formations the second half and if they keep doing it they get burned every single time. Especially by the counter runs. It's so awesome. And if you can mix in some play action, oh man are they screwed.
