    2K11...Refreshing

Been playing 2K13 for a few months now, and really like the in game presentation. However, the game play (and numerous issues) has really killed the overall quality of the product in my opinion. I was trying to stay away from putting 2K11 back in the tray, but finally decided to fire it up to see how the game play compared to 2K13.<O</O
    <O</O

My God, 2K11 with minimal tweaks in settings and sliders plays an unbelievably good game of basketball compared to 2K13. I can actually defend the paint, and don't have to worry about the likes of Lebron or <ST1Kobe</ST1 slashing (warping) through the entire defense for dunk after dunk. I can actually defend the hoop, and block layups, dunks, you name it. The foul system actually works which leads to several free throw opportunities and players getting in foul trouble. Imagine this, a basketball game actually playing like a basketball game should!<O</O
    <O</O

Hell, I played a game last night where I was <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<ST1Phoenix</ST1</st1:City> on the road against Philly. God dangit if they didn't feed Bynum the ball over and over again to pwn Gortat! He used move after move, and truly showed some "Big Man" skill. They played to exploit a mismatch, and Bynum dominated the paint, both on offense and defense. If I tried to drive, he was there and would block my shot and wreak havoc like a big man should.
    <O</O
    <O</O
There were no "magical runs" by the cpu to make the game feel scripted. When the runs occurred, it was because either I or the cpu was turning the ball over or missing well defended shots. I was also having trouble timing my free throw shots, and trading 1's for 2's and 3's was a quick recipe to get behind. Once again, Bynum owned the paint, and made it hell for me to score. He did end up with 5 fouls, but also had 27 points and was the player of the game.<O</O
    <O</O

My point in this semi-rant is that 2K can "pretty" up a game all they want, or even bring in a headliner like Jay-Z to make the soundtrack (sorry - didn't do it for me - 2K11 soundtrack dominates), BUT IT'S THE GAME PLAY THAT MATTERS MOST! You heard me right, game play is still king! Get back on track 2K, and give us players the game play we deserve as your well paying customers. To steal a line from Snoop, "2K11 best game ever made"! OUT!<O</O

It was my Word Program not being compatible with this site. It put a bunch of smiley faces in my post, and I was like, what? Anyway, I think I edited the post now so they should be gone.

I agree! They say that each new game is a continuation of the last iteration but i dont see that when comparing 2k11 and 2k12. its completely different! Gameplay, game modes, glitches, etc etc. 2k12 and 13 dont have anything in common with 2k11. I hope they get back to their roots with 2k14 and get the series back on track because i have not liked the past 2 games compared to 2k11

And I am just the opposite. I think 2k13 is the most realistic game yet.

2k11 was a great game, though.

Glad you made a thread about this, I wanted to do something similar.

2K13 is better than 2K12 in some ways but in other it's flawed. 2K11 still is the best.

            • 1. Foul trouble - Sliders I know but still, there are so many phantom calls or ridiculous fouls called.
            • 2. Put back dunks, players warping from the 3 point line. I was playing with OKC and saw Ibaka do this. He was (ice) skating over the court at 100 mph. Plays like this happen in the NBA, not that often though and definitely not in this way.
            • 3. When I'm playing proper defense other players I'm not controlling decide to jump in the air and the CPU goes to the line. Why is this? Does the CPU cheat to win the game?
            • 4.When you get boxed out by the CPU again you slide over the court. I was standing at the right side of the painted area and all a sudden I'm on the other side. Unrealistic/not possible IRL.
            • 5. Low post game is horrible. It's an animation, it's no skill CPU or player wise. Playing the post was actually fun in 2K11 and 2K12 now it's boring. Howard going in the low post, it's auto-score. Takes no skill and you can't defend it.
            • 6. Warping through players/Animation dunk is horrible and ugly.
            • 7. CPU cheeses when the shot clock is running down. All of a sudden Nash or some other horrible PG is doing all the ISO moves available. Totally unrealistic. When this doesn't work something happens like the ball going through a player so he gets his shot off.
            • 8. Rebounding. There is something that decides that you or the CPU get the ball. AI is also stupid. Both players have the hands on the ball and the CPU wins. etc.

              Re: 2K11...Refreshing

Presentation wise, 2K13 is way ahead of the game. The commentary team, actual lines, info and chemistry is awesome. In my opinion, it is the best out there in a sports game. The crowd is amazing too. They have volume and react appropiately to the game on the court. The pre-game videos and arena pics adds a great touch as well. But I still have to put 2K11 at the top because game play to me is more balanced, and plays more like "real" basketball. If 2K could combine 2K11 balanced game play, and 2K13 type presentation (but with a better soundtrack or custom soundtrack), I might sell all my other games and play basketball all year round. And that is saying a lot when I have games like Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 3 and Forza Horizon in my arsenal.

                I dont' know..

When I popped in 2K11 (I usually do it at least once a year to compare) after the 2K13 release I really wasn't impressed. The gameplay felt very limited. Plays, escape dribbles, post game all felt very simplistic compared to 2K13. Jumpshots also looked wierd, like they where missing some frames.

I would probably need to play 2K11 at least for a full week to be able to say wether 2K13 is better or not but just like that after a few games I put 2K13 and all its flaws back in my xbox in a hurry.

                  Re: 2K11...Refreshing

Vni, you make some valid points for sure. The shot mechanics, and variety of shots in 13 are smooth and realistic moreso than 11. Also will concede that 13 has many more dribble/move combinations. I will also confess that I have not mastered all the skills in 13, so may inhibit my enjoyment.

If I could sum up my thoughts on the two games, I would say the overall feel of 11, and the linear, consistent play is something I desire. I can play 10 games of 2K11 and feel that the outcome of each game was directly related to my skill and how well each team executed. More of a "flat line" experience if I was to draw it up on a chart. When playing 13, my games are all over the place, game to game and quarter to quarter. The experience of each game just does not feel consitent or linear or like I'm necesarily in control of the experience. Whether I execute or not does not necesarily deterine how the game goes. It's a bumpy ride to say the least, and can lead to much frustration when it seems like nothing I can do will stem the tide and stop the cpu control over the game.

With all that said, I still think 2K13 is an outstanding game. I just prefer the solid, linear gameplay that 2K11 provides. And still have high hopes that 2K14 can and will top them all.

2k11 is way better in terms of defense and skill required to play. 2k13 definitely impoved offensively what you can do, bu honestly, besides righ stick dribbling, a few different shot animations and myteam mode, this game stinks in comparison to 2k11..

                      There's a reason that I haven't purchased a basketball game since 2K11.

Why buy a new game if the one that I was already playing is almost already, IMO, perfect?

Wow...it's a shame when people are still comparing NBA 2K11 to the newer games. Keeping it real, the defense was 100% better in NBA 2K11 than NBA 2K12 and NBA 2K13. Man, I felt like I could shut down anybody with good on-the-ball defense.

Im not anywhere near great on defense but rebounding and stopping Howard in the post is easy

That's the problem though, you shouldn't feel that you can shut anybody down, because that's not how defense works in the the real life NBA. 2K13 does a better job of simulating real life than 2K11. In real life, you can't just bump the offensive player any time you want. That's a foul.

No...I was just that good with my defense. If I timed my block right, I got the block. If I timed my steal attempt right, I got the steal. If was able to prevent from your driving by cutting off your path, you picked up your dribble. If I timed my attempt to jump into the passing the lane, because I KNOW you're about to make an ill-advised pass to your big, I got the steal. When I attempted to take a charge because you're wildly attacking the paint, I got the offensive foul. When I made SMALL movements on the LS, my player made SMALL movements (i.e. didn't slide out of defensive position). Hell, when I press the buttons, the player RESPONDED in NBA 2K11!

NBA 2K12 and NBA 2K13 is a complete joke for defensive-minded players who want to play their own defense, instead of hiding in a zone defense and letting the AI guard the ballhandler.

As a side note, the offensive player can't just keep ramming and bumping me backwards 2-3 feet. That's a foul too.
