MLB 13:The Show -- 720P vs 1080P .... Here we go again with this Conversation :)

I am going to be recording my game play with the El Gato this year. With that Capture Card Device, you can only set the display settings on the PS-3 to 720p or 1080i.

I know the game says it is displayed best in 720p.

Is that 100% true in your guys estimations and experiences?

    Thanks.

Yes, with all they have going on 1080p just isn't feasible on the hardware given. Expect 1080p native and 60fps on the PS4 though for sure as it is looking to be beast. This game is meant to be played at 720p.

I highly doubt it. Graphics sell games, therefore game devs will keep creating games that run at 30 fps even on next gen consoles.

So I got a 1080p TV a few months ago. What are the downfalls to playing this game on 1080p?

I believe it's actually 540p interlaced when you try to force it to play at 1080p.

This was meant for The Show which indeed will be 60fps. And 30fps is awful. You only realize how awful it is when you constantly play games in 60fps. I honestly believe that after a year or two 60fps is going to be the main target. Devs aren't stupid. COD sacrifices basically everything for 30fps already. I'm not saying all games will but a good brunt of them are going to be 60fps. We already have a decent amount that are just not the main ones and that is totally because it is not feasible.

The PS4 will indeed make it feasible but obviously still left to the dev. There are some games that don't look too bad with motion blur and 30fps I will say that. But in the end 60fps kicks the living crap out of 30 every time. This isn't film. It is a game you are in direct control of and 60fps creates a smooth and immersive experience.

It can also mess with the timing of your play and the graphics are not the best.
Each TV is different and may correct this, but its best to play with the setting suggested by the Devs.

What I never understood was... does that mean I have to manually change my PS3's display settings everytime I want to play The Show? Or does this happen automatically? When I do the automated setup on my PS3, all the checkboxes are checked, but it seems to default with 1080...

Its automatic. When you run the setup, it chooses your TV's native resolution.

When you play a game, it automatically outputs at the game's optimized resolution. Keep in mind this is the output resolution the ps3 is spitting the game out. Your TV still up scales the image to 1080p (hence why it takes up the entire screen, because its using all lines of resolution). You're just not adding information/detail to the picture when it up scales.

When the Show runs at 720, it uses better texture filtering and anti aliasing. Its not designed to output on 1080p anyway and if it did it would require more processing and struggle to n smoothly and lag free. It actually appears to run 1080i, which is interlaced (I.e. similar to 540p alternating one line up s fills out the entire 1080 lins on your screen). That's why it runs crisper in 1080i, its outpultlower resolution from the ps3 and doesn't use any of the filtering or anti aliasing.

PS4 could no doubt easily run Mlb13 at 1080p 60fps but the problem with keeping it at 60 fps is when Scea improves the graphics.

We all know that graphics always overrides Fps when it comes to consumers. So they will have to make the decision whether to keep on improving the graphics or keep a solid 60 fps.

I'm sure theres a nice middle ground where both happen

Another thing I never understood was when I tried to force the game into 1080p once I had a different stadium model for Wrigley Field. There were just some small things that were different like the eamus catuli and the numbers in right field as to how long it has been since the Cubs won the World Series, they had not been updated. I posted on here and everyone said that there were not different 720 and 1080 stadium models but for MLB 11 I believe it was in 1080 there were little things that had not been updated about Wrigley. I don't know if any of us ever figured it out as to why.

I was always under the impression that the game could not be forced to 1080p. If you unchecked 720p but checked 1080p it would just force the game to render out at an even lower resolution.

I never understood this. If I select 720, the game looks very fuzzy and straight up terrible. 1080 and it looks great and crisp, how it should be.
