We all know the defense needs help; there's already been a million threads on that. However, I'd like to get more specific on 3 separate issues.
1. Transition Defense: This needs an upgrade, badly. In particular, guys don't go up court on defense nearly quickly enough, especially after a basket. As soon as we score, guys need to be booking it to get back into half court defense, not slowly making their way up court as they do now.
2. Defense on long passes: The way defenders currently react to long passes down-court is abysmal. They usually make some sort of half-assed interception animation that almost never works, and it usually leaves the player they're supposed to be defending wide open for an easy dunk or 3 pointer.
3. Player contact in general: We've all seen it. Our defenders are in great position, but then the ball handler triggers an animation that makes the defender irrelevant. Unstoppable dunks are obviously the most blatant offense, but this issue crops up on nearly every possession. Pg's can run right through a center in the paint, up and under animations go right through a defender, and Shot contest often doesn't register. As it stands right now, the majority of online players strategies revolve around abusing this lack of player contact. All in all, I think that player contact, and in general, the lack of it, is the largest problem facing this game.
Personally, I actually enjoyed 2k12 more in that respect. That game obviously had it's own problems, but I could usually count on my defenders actually having an impact on shooters. You couldn't be nearly as sloppy with the ball handler either, a problem that plagues this game, again, because of how the contact works. Imo, that needs to be the focus for 2k14. Contact, contact, contact!
