Magic Makeover: where to even start

I have decided to challenge myself and try to take over the Orlando Magic and rebuild them over 2-5 years (it may take that long unfortunately).

The question is where do I even start to improve this team?

    Current Orlando Magic Roster

    PG: Nelson, Udrih
    SG: Afflalo, Harkless, Doron Lamb,
    SF: Harris, Turkoglu, DeQuan Jones
    PF: Nicholson, Harrington, Glen Davis
    C: Vucevic, O'Quinn

Here is a link to the team salaries which I do not think make this any easier:

The Magic have the second pick in the upcoming 2013 draft and I will make sure they get that pick when I get there in my association. I will also be uploading a real draft class so I can draft real players.

    2013 Orlando Draft Picks:
    Round 1, Pick 2 (2 overall)
    Round 2, Pick 21 (51 overall)

With not many draft picks the number 2 pick becomes very important even though it is in a weaker draft class.

Building through the draft is usually the way I go, but what would you do?

I would draft Ben Mclemlore or Otto porter truly you need any player who has the potential to be good lol you can't favor a position with that second pick. The most important thing in the off season is to get rid of Jameer Nelsom and Hedo Tur. They're both a waste of cap and can't be on a rebuilding roster pick up a young guard in FA and maybe some young role players and u might actually have a decent season lol

First a couple of questions, are you on PS3? If yes what rosters will you be using? And are you going to sim the 2012/2013 season? What guarantees that you get the #2 pick?

If i were you, i would draft Oladipo/McLemore, play him at the 2, Harkless at the 3 and Tobias at the 4. Slide Nicholson to the bench then trade Nelson+Davis for a PG. Trade Hedo for Cap relief if possible and you're in a pretty good situation.

Trade Afflalo as well, for a future pick or a young player you can develop off the bench

You should just suck for a couple years to get good draft picks then when players like Vucevic and Harris improve their ratings the team will be able to get a lower seed in the eastern conference.

I am just coming to the end of my first season with Orlando, battling for the 8th seed. I shipped Turkoglu and Harrington out, I have Lamar Odom as a 6th man off the bench.

          Starting five is:
          Nelson
          Afflalo
          Harkless
          Nicholson
          Vucevic

Harkless somehow made the all star team averaging 8 points/5 rebs (6 minute quarters) but then got injured just after the break so I moved Afflalo to the 3 and inserted Doron Lamb and he is just instant offense.

Will wait and see whether I make the playoffs or not before I make plans for free agency/draft.

C'mon where is Harris at? He's an integral part of the future awesome frontcourt the Magic are building.

              First, you're missing E'Twaun Moore.
Harkless is better suited for SF and Harris has been playin PF.
Anyway, draft McLemore/Oladipo. Suck in 13/14, go for Wiggins/Parker/Smart. Keep Nelson.
Try and move Harrington, waive Turk.
Put Harkless through 3PT and defense camps, Harris and Nicholson through Post D camps.
              Line-up post 2014 Draft: Smart-McLemore-Harkless-Harris-Vucevic(Afflalo(6th Man)/PG-McLemore-Wiggins/Parker-Harris-Vucevic(Harkless 6th Man), also keep Nicholson and O'Quinn.
If you get Wiggins/Parker try and get a PG through FA or trade.

                Sorry I just missed Moore.

and I just listed them at the positions they were listed at on the Magic Depth Chart on ESPN or whatever site I found it on. I was not near an xbox when I made the initial post.

I agree with keeping Harris Harkless and drafting McLemore and going from there. I think Big Baby and Turk definitely have to go.

Re: Magic Makeover: where to even start

Magic started their rebuilding process as late as last year, so they are a few years away from being in playoff contention again. Take a few years off, have the 2014 off-season as your goal. You will be having a chance at Wiggins in the draft, if you're using a draft roster. And the 2014 free agency is stacked with talents. The two first years will be rough, but I believe it's the way to go.

I only say to move Al(trade) and Turk(waive) not Davis 'cause we're actually looking at that and at the moment, Davis is the only guy that can play D in the post.

Keep the comments coming! I would love to hear more about what players moves you would make, like draft picks and trades or signings. Yes, I will be using real draft classes so McLemore and 2014 prospects can be drafted.

I stacked first round picks. One year I had 3 and traded for John Wall! It was Wall-McLemore-Harkless-Greg Monroe-Vucevic.. Still this was only enough to get my favorite team the 7th seed. Only for Monroe and McLemore to dip out in FA and get me back into rebuild yet again.. ):

I liked what you had there in Wall and Monroe until they left you high and dry! Just the Magic's luck.

Everyone knows how messed up the 2K trading system is, and how they offer some ridiculous and unrealistic deals. I always try to make sure the trade is realistic and fair for both sides. Makes it more fun.

Any real trades that the Magic could potentially make over the next year or two to help the rebuilding process in Orlando?

Just make sure to keep Harris and Vucevic. Harkless is a quality starter as well, but Harris and Vucevic have the brightest future of the bunch.

The Magic have a solid young core. I think you're best of picking up a McLemore this draft, then hoping to suck again to draft Marcus Smart the following year.

A starting lineup of Smart-McLemore-Harkless-Harris-Vucevic with Lamb, Nicholson, DeQuan Jones, and E'Twuan Moore coming off the bench is a real nice start. If the players pan out decently, you should be able to reach the playoffs by year 3, then hopefully contend by year 5.
