Re: Next Gen Tennis Title?
I want a much-expanded roster more than anything. Put some more legends, some recent legends, and just more players in general. I think at least the top 10-15 of both ATP and WTA should be included, as well as other significant players (like Venus, who's outside the top 20...but come on, it's freakin' Venus Williams).
Make doubles more...existent. I'd like to see some doubles specialists like the Bryan Brothers, Daniel Nestor, Lisa Raymond, and such in the game. Doubles play should be more existent in career mode too.Currently focusing on: NCAA Football 12, NFL Head Coach 09Comment

In fact, I think Career Mode could be even better. Look at Smash Court Tennis 3, a game that I think has a wonderful career mode (called Pro Tour mode). You can rise to the rankings in singles, doubles, and/or mixed doubles. I want to be able to do that.Currently focusing on: NCAA Football 12, NFL Head Coach 09Comment

Re: Next Gen Tennis Title?
In all honesty there are a lot of gameplay elements that needed to be added.
I think that the animation system is getting kinda tired and is frustrating. Players should run off a natural physics system with foot planting, allowing for more movement on the court and the ability to use your footwork to open up shots for yourself instead of hoping you get a good animation.
Weight and speed don't really play into the game enough, as well as height. Top Spin would greatly benefit if certain heights and weights impacted the ability to achieve certain ratings.. So a 6,5 guy weighing 15 stone would not be able to manouvre around the court as well as a 5,11 10 stone guy, but would have a bigger margin for powerful shots.
Differentiating players' abilities through natural physics would really help the game and should stop cheese, especially if ball physics were improved.
The timing and shot system is great but it really needs a LOT more animations.
I find that currently you can get stuck in an animation instead of allowing your player to branch from it and adjust.
Trying to really rush and attack a ball in the air is almost fruitless as players cannot approach a ball unless already in an animation, meaning if the wrong animation triggers your shot is completely ruined and the point may last unnecessarily long. The opposite can happen too where people can get miraculous shots with ridiculous power from terrible angles that they shouldn't be able to make which is a fundamental flaw of the animation system.
The fact that there are only a handful of signature animations for professionals and few stock animations for created players really makes the game feel a little bit stale after a while.
I'd also love some more natural ball physics to be implemented and a more noticeable stamina system.
I think that the game needs to have sliders to allow for more unforced errors and bad serves should we want them.
Graphically the game could do with a touch up just for next gen and the inclusion of a boat load of new products to buy with your player during career mode.
Customisations should be deepened and there should be way more outfits for current players that will get triggered depending on what their opponent is playing (to stop clashes) Likewise created players should have 3 slots to create pre sets in that can be switched through before games, and they should have court entrance attire too (such as a coat, jacket, towel, etc.)
The roster is pretty good but could do with some smaller name people just to populate the career mode, or some slots to insert created players into the career mode a bit like Fight Night had a couple years back.
These are some of my ideas for a possible Top Spin 5... but I'm slightly concerned at the lack of mention of a next gen tennis title, especially considering how Virtua Tennis is almost always a next gen release title?Comment

The problem with tennis video games is that each player has to be licensed individually.I want a much-expanded roster more than anything. Tennis has no collective entity like the NBAPA, NFLPA, NHLPA, etc. that can singlehandedly approve the licensing of all its members.
So that's why most tennis video games only have 10-20 licensed players. It would be way too expensive and time consuming for a game publisher to license more than that.Comment

Re: Next Gen Tennis Title?
I agree with this, but, then I see a game (app) like Stick Tennis, who seem to have the Top 16 men's and women's seeds for each Grand Slam Tournament. Here's some players in Stick Tennis, Nicolas Almagro, Lucie Safarova, Richard Gasquet, Maria Kirilenko. I don't know how they do it. Maybe they have the license for WTA and ATP? I don't know. They don't have the Wimbledon or real names of any of the Grand Slams' license though. The problem with tennis video games is that each player has to be licensed individually.

I'd buy a Top Spin 5 or even a Smash Court Tennis 4 with much improved gameplay.Comment

I think excuses such as cost or effort are unacceptable when it comes to signing players.I agree with this, but, then I see a game (app) like Stick Tennis, who seem to have the Top 16 men's and women's seeds for each Grand Slam Tournament. Game developers seem to think that all we want are the stars... If we can get the top 5, most of the people that fill out the respective top 10s and then up and coming players with some more legends, the roster will be improved dramatically.
Just because there isn't a name recognition, filling a roster with people like John Isner or even for Brits Laura Robson will really help. The two Polish guys that did well at Wimbledon, despite low seeding and rank would be good in the game...
In general, we need more players that can be signed cheaper. There are hundreds of players on the tour and it shouldn't be expenpsive or much effort to sign some young players that aren't heralded, have potential and need some name recognition...
Likewise for legends... Getting people like Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and Tim Henman would do wonders for respective markets and wouldn't command the price of a Federer, Nadal, Djokovic or Murray who they can seem to include easily.
If they released DLCs with some additional courts, or official/licensed clothes you can buy in career mode, as well as updates for ability, the longevity and sales will only increase.Comment
