“It’s more fun to be the big guy” we’ve got My Player details for NBA 2K14

While we were at NBA 2K14 developer Visual Concepts, spending hours with the game for our massively in-depth preview, we got the chance to sit down with several members of the team to chat all-things-basketball. We covered new features, LeBron’s involvement, motion-capturing real NBA players, the return of Crew and--oh yeah--the always popular My Player mode.
“We have telemetry data that tells us what the most-played mode is, and My Player always comes out way on top,” explains Wang. “From the gameplay side--we’ve spent a lot of time in 2K14 making sure that you feel as if you’re playing with real people. In the past it felt like you were on your own, and that your AI players were just getting in the way. You know--you’d create a great opportunity for one of your team mates, you’d kick it out to him for a shot, and he’d just pass it away or not really know what to do.
“Ha--yes, it’s much better when you’re playing as a big-guy too. You can rebound the ball and block-shots as a specialist defender--like a Serge Ibaka character--much more easily. You can have fun doing that, something we felt was really lacking until 2K14.”
“That philosophy has been applied to the whole game, so it isn’t just My Player that’ll get the benefit,” he continues. “We looked at everything you could do and tried to make it one-to-one between offense and defense. So for every attacking move, there’s a defensive counter. One example is that you can now block dunks. In 2K13 you just couldn’t, but now--if you see a guy coming down the lane--you can challenge that shot. Defense is half the game. We didn’t want My Player sessions to feel like you’re just waiting for offense. We want players to have fun all the time.”
if I’m jumping to block and the guy has pump-faked me, what happens in the past is that you’d land on him and push him back a little. There’d be no foul or collision. So what we did this year is add a feature where you can actually collide with that guy, and you might just fall on top of the ball handler.

Great find, great read, was thinking of making a PF; hopefully now they can fix the height caps of these MyPlayers to have a realistic experience and less 7-foot small forwards that tower over most PF's and C's, but have the speed and quickness of Derrick Rose and range of Ray Allen.

Jwill how do you feel about your people saying that you couldn't block dunks in 2k13? We both made comments about this last year, and I have seen a block dunk before. Although, it is very rare. Now that the devs are saying it was not in the game last year what is your take on that?

I feel as if its more to focus on that you can now for sure. Cause if it was avail. last year, then they can't tout it as new this year.

I know I've blocked dunks on 2K13, it was just that rare.

People have shown contact and stuff but I have never seen a clean blocked dunk. Sometimes it may have looked like it but it was just missed dunks, the defender's hand just happened to be there. Sometimes it was just layup animations or wierd glitched rebound animations.

not a single word about the most important thing and the game breaker for me last year.

Will we be able to set a simple screen without breaking the play??? that killed the mode for me, specially since I love playing as a pick and pop stretch 4

Reading the quote verbatim he says "in 2k13 you just couldn't" block dunks,

I interpret that to mean it was just exceedingly rare, not that it was literally impossible.

Lol I believe you. I just haven't seen them.

Anyway, when people have to show replays of blocked dunks to prove to daily 2K13's players that they exist 10 months after release, that shows how rare they are.

Btw.... I still was never dropped by a crossover. Never ever. Even though I should have many times. I never fall on the ground like the CPU randomly does. Never against the CPU never against a Human. I have never dropped another human either. Mind you I don't play mycareer or blacktop. Only hof sim humvhum games.

Shouldn't be too likely due to the fact that it's not very likely in real life either.

I agree but you can drop the CPU at will just by spamming random moves. And I have played 2K daily for 8 or so months.

I don't really care about MyPlayer, but I'm a huge Team Up fan. I like being a defensive big man anyway, so I'm definitely looking forward to the new system. And with all the quitters in this mode, I'm also looking forward to the CPU actually being useful.

big men in mycareer didnt need to be tweaked at all. It was easy to score in the post and grab rebounds, but not so easy that i would have to average 30pts a game. The only super easy thing about being a big man was rebounding. Averaging like 20rebs a game was a little unrealistic, but blocks weren't that hard to come by either as i averaged like 2 a game. Big man game just needs to be tweaked a little for quick match team up, because its a little hard to stay relevant in the game with every one spamming 3pters as a guard or small forward.
