I would like to know too but for completely different reasons, last year me and a friend had a online CCM and pretty much every game we played against each other in it we would get the booted for excessive grieving message, normally when the score was 7-0 or something, id understand if someone was exploiting the game but this would happen after things like a 70 yard drive on 8 throws and 5 runs for example.

This was EA's response when people asked about Madden 12:

      - Excessive Grieving

In order to maintain a fun, competitive environment, we must monitor users for behavior that alters an opponent’s ability to play Madden NFL 12. As such we have a number of metrics that are monitored in-game which we consider potentially “grievous”. Thresholds for these metrics are maintained on our servers, and when players repeatedly perform actions enough times to break that set threshold, they are kicked for “Excessive grieving”. Some of these are obvious, such as the user drawing too many offsides, encroachments, and false starts penalties. NOTE: These are USER behaviors. You are not at risk if the CPU happens to draw these penalties without user input.

The more obscure kicks, however, come in the form of being removed for “Network Timeouts”. Without going into too many details, these occur because we have determined that something on your end is degrading the gameplay experience for your opponent. This type of kick is only used in more extreme situations, because we do not want to kick users who are not acting maliciously. However, the bottom line is, if you are kicked for “Network Timeouts” it is because something on your end of the connection is degrading your opponent’s play experience (i.e inducing lag, hitching, etc).

In the past, many of these issues were simply communicated to the user in the form of a “Peer has Disconnected” popup. Based on community feedback, we decided to communicate why the peer was kicked instead of identifying it as a general problem. In short, nothing has changed on the functionality side, we’re simply now accurately communicating to users why games are ending.

I believe running the same play over and over again can get you kicked for excessive grieving. Which is funny, because it makes no sense to go away from a play that continues to work because your opponent is too dense to defend against it.

In Madden 13, I liked to open up all my games with the Lions by throwing a play action Go route to Calvin Johnson. If the opponent was caught unaware, it was almost always like an instant 80-yard TD.

Against one opponent, I did that on 6 consecutive drives because he continuously failed to change his defensive formation to prevent it from being open. Then I got kicked for excessive grieving.

I got kicked against my best friend once for the same thing.

          It's a bit silly.

A guy in my CCM gets kicked for excessive grieving vs other users. It's a huge problem because he always makes it to the Super Bowl and we've had to replay it several times. Our last Super Bowl of Madden 13 ended with him being kicked for grieving and then giving up because he was down 21-0 in the 3rd quarter. The 5th (and last) season of our CCM is stuck on Super Bowl week.

He also lost Super Bowl 3 but was kicked in the 4th quarter down 20+ points. We had to restart the game and run out the clock to crown the winner.
