2K Deserves Props For Their Next-Gen Marketing

Now it has been revealed that 2K will release new information at least once a day until release (sometimes two times). Ronnie2K actually has handled this marketing transition to Next-Gen beautifully in my opinion.

They deserve credit, because traditionally I think they actually under-market their own games if that makes sense.

If anything, this marketing, their amazing attention to detail has me clamoring for that NFL license in March. Take note EA/NFL.

How do you guys feel about their approach to Next-Gen marketing?

I like it! I know some people are expecting everything at once, but that's not how it works. Now that we'll actually be getting news every day now, I think the amount of complaints will go down.

Of course we'll still have those gameplay or die people, but I'm loving this approach. News everyday will get me more hyped and anticipating than I already am.

They deserve credit because they're releasing a next gen version of a game 6 weeks after a current gen version, and have clearly put some effort into distinguishing it from that version. If you look at other companies (such as EA), you'll see that they're cashing in by just re-releasing a higher-def version of what is essentially the same game. So yeah, props to 2K for that.

I'm curious as to see what they have in store for MYGM and the accommodating features coinciding with that particular game mode. for an association guy, it's very uplifting to hear that association was totally re-tooled. but how much of an
enhancement has it undergone, is the real question? is there a GM mode AS WELL as an owners box? because to me, mygm seems reminiscent of nab 2k5, which i'm fine with.

Re: 2K Deserves Props For Their Next-Gen Marketing

As a consumer, I'm personally not a fan of their marketing this year. Perhaps for fans of marketing (or those who specialize in it), maybe they're doing the right thing. But for 2K basketball video game fans, I still feel as though we know very little about the upcoming next generation offering.

I personally prefer knowing as much about an upcoming game as possible, and well in advance of its release. 2K's actually been pretty thorough in that regard in years past with their developer insight write-ups (though they've floundered a bit in recent years with brief video interviews taking the place of the detailed insights).

This year, in particular with the next generation release, I feel as though we know only the broadest facts about 2K14 to this point. There's a few modes, mostly all now starting with "My", and the graphics look superb up close. Beyond that, there's been a lot of generalizations and even more questions.

There really was a time when 2K was much more transparent and forthcoming with information (for better or for worse). In this case, it now feels more similar to a classic big company marketing scheme: hype the bejesus out of something, blow up the positives of your game, hold out on the details until the last second, and avoid the difficult questions unless you have an answer for them that will make everyone happy.

Who cares about their marketing if their ratings and tendencies are still going to be all messed up? Are they marketing that? Didn't think they were...

Totally agree. I haven't been this hyped about a game since NFL 2K which was released on the Dreamcast.

The term "marketing" is one if the misused words around these forums...probably next to "sim"....I rarely comment on the subject because I work and directly in marketing and kind of get annoyed when people act like they do such a horrible job...

2k's NBA 2k14 trailer being on virtually commercial break during NBA opening night is great marketing...

Them having a booth on the ITNBA set is great marketing...

Them not showing what you want to see in particular is not bad marketing....it's marketing that doesn't appeal to YOU....

Not necessarily a fan of their marketing this year.

This game played a huge part into my decision as to wether I would purchase a next gen console on release day.

It was annoying to start with. Vague/exaggerated hints and no time frame from the marketing team, but I'm glad the dust has settled.

Loving the dedication and hardwork the 2K Team has. Microsoft/Sony owe you. You sold on me buying their console.

Right, which is why I maintained that perhaps for marketing junkies, 2K's going by the book. However, such an approach doesn't do much for folks who truly want to know the in's and out's of a product in hopes of making an informed decision.

Has 2K done a great job of making it sound as if their new game is the second coming? I mean, I guess. But I can't say, as a consumer looking for information, I'd want to give 2K props for mastering an approach whose point is merely to build a groundswell of hype without revealing the substance behind the product in question.

I'm not a marketing junkie. I'm a Computer Science grad so I understand the difficulties of transitioning from one device to another. 2K is clearly proud and willing to show their product off, which is refreshing in comparison to other sport's companies who seem reluctant to even show much of anything.

I give 2K credit for actually making a conceited effort to improving their product with new technology, unlike some companies who just learned how to develop for a system while playing it safe and completely ripping people off in the process.

There's a reason the camel in the GEICO commercial is walking around the office saying "Guess what day it is!" and not "Here is a compete list of our rates, and how they stack up with competitors, at the end of the commercial, there will be a list of pros and cons about our product"...there's marketing, then there's wanting to know some of the in's and outs of the product to make an informed decision...

I get that, and again, your speaking for everyone...I and many others certainly have enough/ have seen enough information about the game to know I am going to purchase it, doesn't mean we're swept up in some hype or "marketing junkies",..and if you don't, I completely respect that...not sure what kind if detail you are looking for, but hopefully you get your questions answered in the upcoming weeks...

I'm definitely not asking anyone to give them props or anything like that, just wish we could stop with this "bad marketing" thing...I consult with company's on the regular that actually do have "bad marketing"

                            One screenshot at a time!?!

Personally I can't believe the autroxious (aside from 4minutes of produced trailers) "marketing." I sincerely am floored by the ambiguos game details and the lack of true gameplay footage. This goes for both nextgen 2k and Madden. So, it's not like 2k is the only company doing this. CG been out for months...2 weeks from release, game surely final...this is a little bizarre to me. But, it is what it is...Can't change it.

im kinda confused about this because we dont really have much information on ng 2k under the hood. they showed us the graphics which we knew were gonna be good, and announced a few modes, but nothing about how the game will play and feel different than cg. thats no different than what some companies are doing.
