          Jags Don't Re-Sign Anyone
          Place Franchise Tag on MJD

Does MJD's Franchise Tag make him trade bait?

          February 9, 2014
          Jacksonville, FL

          (AP)
In the midst of their rebuilding campaign, GM David Caldwell elect to not re-sign any Jaguars players making them all free agents. However, reports indicate that Caldwell reached out to several players in hopes of re-signing them - namely HB Jordan Todman, WR Mike Brown, and DT Sen'Derrick Marks - both the parties were too far apart in contract negotiations. Caldwell did use the Jaguars Franchise Tag on longtime Jaguar and hometown favorite, HB Maurice Jones-Drew. Whether MJD will stay for the whole year, sign an extension, or be traded away is still up in the air.

            Jacksonville Off-Season Continues Roster Rumblings
Trades and Cuts Announced Before Free Agency Period

Jags bid farewell to team's all time points leader, "Scobee Bryant"

            February 16, 2014
            Jacksonville, FL

            (AP)
The Jaguars' rebuilding efforts continue this week with the announcement of trades and cuts. Among the cuts were, WR Stephen Burton, WR Stephen Williams, DE Jeremy Mincey, DE Jason Babin, and K Josh Scobee. GM David Caldwell announced that these cuts were made for financial reasons and opened up over $13 million in cap space as the team approaches Free Agency.

Additionally, he announced the following four trades:
            • HB Maurice Jones-Drew and TE Marcedes Lewis were traded to San Diego for their 3rd Round Pick (90th Overall)
            • HB Justin Forsett and the team's 6th Round (163rd Overall) were traded to Oakland for QB Terrelle Pryor
            • LBs Geno Hayes and Russell Allen were traded to the New York Giants for their 6th and 7th Round Picks (166th and 198th Overall)
            • G Uche Nwaneri was traded to Saint Louis for HB Darryl Richardson

The first trade flies California natives and former UCLA teammates, Maurice Jones-Drew and Marcedes Lewis to San Diego for the 90th overall pick in the Draft. Jacksonville creates more cap room and gains a top 100 pick and San Diego will presumably start Jones-Drew over Ryan Matthews and Lewis over the aging Antonio Gates in their offense.

The trade to Oakland may conceivably net the Jaguars a starting quarterback heading into the season in Terrelle Pryor. Oakland, who will likely lose HBs Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings in Free Agency, gain a potential starter in Justin Forsett as well as a draft pick in a loaded draft class. Pryor passed for over 3000 yards last season, but struggled with accuracy and completed just 51% of his passes. The Raiders should target a franchise quarterback with their 9th overall pick.

The last two trades with the Giants and Rams cleared cap space for the Jaguars while also giving them a couple of late round draft picks and a young running back prospect.

Jacksonville Takes a Step in the Right Direction
                  Score Big in Free Agency

The Prodigal Son returns to Jacksonville

                  March 2, 2014
                  Jacksonville, FL

                  (AP)
Only Tim Tebow can take away from the Jaguars' signing of WR Golden Tate, WR Eric Decker, and DE Greg Hardy. Tebow signed a two year, $7 million deal which does not have guaranteed money attached to it. The Jaguars, who have seemingly avoided him since he was eligible to be drafted in 2010, opened up their arms to him after he reportedly told the Jags' Front Office that he was willing to switch positions. For now, however, the Jags will label him a quarterback and will tinker with ways of getting him on the field during the Pre-Season.

The highlight of the Jags' signings were WRs Golden Tate and Eric Decker, and DE Greg Hardy. Tate and Decker add insurance to a shaky receiving corps whose top receivers are Cecil Shorts and Justin Blackmon. Shorts, who is entering the final year of his contract, amassed over 1000 yards receiving for the Jaguars (the first player to do so since Jimmy Smith), he struggled with drops and looks more like a second or third option. Meanwhile, Blackmon, who has yet to be re-instated in the NFL following an indefinite suspension for drug and/or alcohol use, has an uncertain future ahead, both on and off the field.

DE Greg Hardy was the Jaguars' biggest prize for the defensive minded Coach Bradley. At 6'4" and 277 pounds, Hardy has freakish athletic ability and strength, but was a bit of a disappointment for the Panthers with just 5 sacks. With his size, Hardy can play a variety of positions in Coach Bradley's defensive scheme.

In total, the Jacksonville signed 9 new players as they head into the Draft.

                  FREE AGENCY SIGNINGS
QB Tim Tebow: 7M/2 Years (Non-Guaranteed)

                  WR Golden Tate: 35M/5 Years
                  WR Eric Decker: 21M/3 Years
                  WR Doug Baldwin: 14M/4 Years
                  OT Matt Kopa: 680K/1 Year
                  DE Greg Hardy: 20M/4 Years
                  DE Adewale Ojomo: 1.8M/3 Years
                  SS Taylor Mays: 910K/1 Year

                          Day One: First Round

After a trio of trades, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected two pass rushers with their 1st round picks

                          New York, NY

                          (AP)
The 2014 NFL Draft started with the Steelers' selection of QB Marcus Mariota out of Oregon after trading away their former face of the franchise, Ben Roethlisberger, to Houston for a 2nd round pick. Jacksonville, who held the 3rdoverall pick and had QB Teddy Bridgewater fall to their laps, traded down to Arizona for the 5th, 37th, and 146th overall picks. Arizona proceeded to draft Bridgewater with the 3rd overall pick.

However, upon their time to pick at 5th overall, Jacksonville traded down again - this time to St. Louis for the Rams' 11th, 13th, and 203rd overall pick. At pick 11, Jacksonville traded down for the third and final time, picking up the 24th, 56th, and 88th overall pick from the Philadelphia Eagles.

In total, the Jaguars picked up an additional 6 draft picks, before selecting DE Jadeveon Clowney from South Carolina with the 13th overall pick and LB Anthony Barr out of UCLA with the 24th overall pick. Both Clowney and Barr were highly touted prospects going in to the draft and were arguably Top 10 picks. Jacksonville, who had an opportunity to select their franchise quarterback in the first round, opted to address their pass rushing needs instead. In total, six quarterbacks were taken in the first round - Johnny Manziel, Zach Mettenberger, and A.J. McCarron were not selected.

Clowney and Barr should form a nice tandem with Greg Hardy along the defensive line in Coach Gus Bradley's unique 4-3/3-4 scheme.

Day Two: Second and Third Round

Johnny Manziel's blindside will be protected by Luke Joeckel once again

                            May 9, 2014
                            New York, NY

                            (AP)
Jacksonville picked up six key pieces on Day 2, including their presumed franchise signal caller, Johnny Manziel. Johnny Football fell all the way to 56 overall before the Jaguars scooped him. Questions about his maturity, leadership, style of play, and size were the likely factors causing his drop. At the combine he measured in at 6'0" and weighed 200 pounds.

Before the Manziel pick, the Jaguars selected FS Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at 35 overall and DT Louis Nix III at 37th overall. Clinton-Dix should start at free safety for the Jaguars while Nix III will likely start at the nose tackle position.

After the Manziel pick, Jacksonville picked up linebacker, Shayne Skov near the top of the third round at 67th overall. With Paul Posluszny on the team, Skov could shift to outside linebacker or work as a key back up behind Posluszny. The Jaguars later addressed their offensive line woes by selecting offensive linmen, David Yankey from Stanford and Cyril Richardson out of Baylor at 88 and 90 overall, respectively. Both have tremendous size and can play in the interior at guard or line up at right tackle. Training camp and the pre-season should dictate where they will play.

                              NFL Draft
Day Three: Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Round

No matter what position he plays, De'Anthony Thomas will be a threat with the ball for Jacksonville

Jacksonville picked up plenty of speed with the selection of De'Anthony Thomas. While the team announced him as a running back, he will have plenty of opportunities to see the field as a runner, receiver, or returner. The Jaguars also had a couple of steals in the fifth round, selecting CB/S Lamarcus Joyner and C/G Gabe Ikard. Both were highly touted as Day 2 picks, but fell to the Jaguars on Day 3.

The Jags had a questionable sixth round pick in selecting P Mike Sadler from Michigan State considering they infamously spent a third round pick on P Bryan Anger just two years ago. They rounded out the draft by selecting a trio of prospects in QBs Jordan Lynch, Logan Thomas, and Kain Colter in the seventh round. Whether they will play quarterback or some other position remains to be unseen.
