At least one student was shot, and they have to be airlifted all the way here to Lubbock. We're the closest Trauma One center.

I'm from Roswell and went to BMS actually. Word right now is there were 3 victims. One supposedly was airlifted straight to Lubbock but died in flight. Two are in critical condition and were flown to Lubbock after being transferred to the hospital.

EDIT: News reports saying only the two critical ones were the only victims. State police are supposed to have a press conference shortly so hopefully there's some clarification.

I know Lubbock is closer than Albuquerque but is there no trauma 1 unit in Las Cruces or is that still further away than Lubbock?

It's nit-picky, but Lubbock is ~10 miles closer. And LC is only ~10 miles closer than Albuquerque. I have no idea if Las Cruces has a T1 Center however.

Pretty sure Las Cruces isn't a level 1. I work at the hospital in Roswell and whenever someone is transferred it's either to Lubbock or Albuquerque.

Press conference just aired. Shooter had a shotgun in a bag, pulled it out in the gym before school, and started shooting. Staff member walked up to him and asked him to stop shooting, he then put the gun down. Two victims, one in critical condition, one serious.

That seems like a strange way of getting him to stop shooting. I dont know much about the situation but that sentence really stood out to me.

TC's on to something here... we don't have all the details yet and there has been no word on whether or not this is even the cause. Without breaking the TOS, all I can say is that this is an extremely conclusion-jumpy thing to say.

And anyway, why is it that we need to determine just what is to blame for things? Seriously... there can be any number of explanations for anything happening and guessing at what they may be changes nothing about what happened. Not trying to call you out, clemson, because I hear this kind of thing a lot, and it absolutely sickens me.

All that said, my prayers definitely go out to all those impacted, a sad, sad thing happened today. Something that should never happen. Let's just focus our thoughts on those who were lost and their families, instead of trying to find something to blame.

Oh, and Mods, if I took this too far, feel free to delete this post, I just get riled up about this kind of stuff.

How often do school shootings end with the shooter still alive? I'm kind of surprised by that. A bit "relieved" too because perhaps an investigation can help dig into why he did what we did. Better than never knowing.

I hope everyone pulls through. These shootings are ridiculous, and quite scary. As a teacher myself, I always show concern but even more so would find myself putting my students before me in a situation like that.

I'm thinking at 12, you don't think things through all the way. Kid finds himself in school with a shotgun, and in a blur he's shot two classmates. I don't think it hit him until it was done that he shot (killed?) a couple kids.

As a follow up, the shooting was planned, the victims were random. As far as I know, both kids are still alive, one is for sure.

Another School Shooting

Well yeah it's planned, you have to consciously pack the gun in your backpack and bring it to school. I know it's different in the Southwest, but I don't think it's a common mistake to have a spare gun laying around in your school supplies.

I was just trying to make sense of it, but it doesn't make any. Just a tragedy... Young children doing this to other young children. As if "regular" school shootings weren't horrific and tragic enough.
