Re: UNION
probably helps the chances of getting a new game. Since payed athletes seem to be the key to licensing.
Of course, I am pretty uneducated about this sort of thing, so dont take my word for it. -
Re: UNION
A large scale player's union could indeed lead to a college football game with named rosters.
Or it could kill the existing structure of college football entirely.Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.Comment

Re: UNION
I would still say no. They said they aren't looking to get paid with this union, it's more to get medical benefits and some sort of insurance that they can continue their education if they suffer a career ending injury and have the school pay for needed surgeries and rehab, which currently school does not have to do so.Beavers|Red Sox|Buccaneers|NBA HoopsComment

Re: UNION
How the NCAA and colleges react to this is such a huge variable it is impossible to say, and even that depends on the appeal not winning, which is potentially years away from getting sorted out.Teams: Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Reds, Marshall Thundering Herd, Virginia Tech Hokies (2010 alum)Comment

Re: UNION
I'm not sure it hurts the chances seeing as the "old way" eliminated NCAA video games... It's still the very very early stages of years of litigation but Northwestern got the ball rolling. It's only a matter of time until "student athletes" become "student employees"Comment

Re: UNION
ought to just assume that in the near future it will be happening, strip down ncaa '14, port it over to the new systems and let us beta test it for a year."Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory."Comment

Re: UNION
Basically it would help, but is a long way off from really taking form.
It also could severely damage NCAA Football to a point where I no longer enjoy it...
There would be collective bargaining. If the institution side wants to provide a game license (with or without likeness), they could put it on the table... even just for health benefits.Comment

Re: UNION
I don't think it goes anywhere. There was a story on ESPN that even if they are able to pull this off the players would have to start paying taxes on their scholarships (looking at almost 15k) and the colleges would probably start charging them for things. I'm sorry, but these guys get a free education, room/board, free meals, spending money, and they get a chance to show off their skills on a national level. They don't need anymore compensation than that. Any other benefits they try to go after are going to end up blowing up in their facesComment

Re: UNION
Officials from Northwestern said they'll appeal this ruling. They also said if they lose the appeal they'll drop the football program altogether.Comment

Re: UNION
Lol. They would drop athletic or just football. The money is in football. The university of florida pay all the athletic scholarships from the revenue of the first crappy football game they play in the year. Football is what supporting most athletic departments around the country. Paying college athlete will never happen nor should it ever happen. But the demand of those Northwestern players are very reasonable. Sport injuries last long after those players graduatedComment

Re: UNION
Northwestern is just the first of many to be affected... Even if they do drop the football program, other universities will inevitably be paying their athletes eventually and Northwestern will re-enact their program.
They're trying to call with an obvious bluff.Comment
