It's already started for some teams....so might as well start the discussion.

 Re: NHL 2014 Off-Season Thread

I suppose last year's class of defensemen was real terrible, but this one really doesn't offer any hope for a team looking for a top pairing guy, unless Markov leaves Montreal.

If Vanek doesn't end up in Minnesota I'll be stunned.Comment

 NHL 2014 Off-Season Thread

Just been watching some exit interviews for the Flyers. Seeing Mason talk just made me so sad. I can't believe the team let him down, he played out of his mind. I was back and forth on him this year, he had a roller coaster year, but he pulled it together late and kept it rolling in the playoffs. Probably one of the best goalie performances I've seen from a Flyers goalie in my lifetime (Biron played well in 08, and Leighton had a freakish run in 2010 but I don't recall him making so many incredible saves). I feel like he was robbed of a chance to show off more of that goodness in round 2. It's safe to say I'm a backer of Mason going forward, though I recognize next year will be a test to see if he can keep it going as well. I questioned his mental toughness even as he started Games 4-7 for us, but no more of that. Mason is the Flyers starting goaltender.

It was pretty amazing seeing the media trying to goad owner Ed Snider into making some comments they could make a headline out of. Snider did a good job of calling them out. The team had a great season after the tough start, and that led to them getting a tough draw in the Rangers to kick off the playoffs. NY had a similar arc to their season, and just as they finished slightly ahead of us in the standings, I think they were just barely that much better then us. I'm interested in seeing how deep they can go, because outside of Boston, nobody scared me as a Flyers fan from the East.

I wouldn't mind seeing either of the Schenn's moved this offseason. Akesson seems to have solidified a spot next year with a great playoff performance. Gustafsson should be a starter, and I think Timonen should hang them up. He got by on his hockey IQ because he lost a lot physically, but that just shows how good he is because he was still okay and a great leader. Very much Lidstrom Lite (blasphemy!). I'm about sick of Coburn, he's never impressed me... Solid 2nd pairing but as a minutes eating top 2 D, ehhh. This one might be crazy, but if there's a market for Scott Hartnell, I think we should move him. We have Simmonds who plays the same role and probably better and a lot younger. Hartsy is a big vet presence and fan favorite but I think the decline is beginning and if we can get back something, we should pull the trigger.

Just some random thoughts. I don't think the team needs much retooling, and I look forward to a full offseason and season under Berube, whose only mistake was letting Hal Gill play Game 5, but I don't totally blame him because he plays a similar style to the injured Grossmann, just doesn't have it physically to keep up.

I can see Voracek going for 80+ points next season. When that guy touches the puck, you notice him. Very unique style, not afraid to mix it up, a great Flyer and compliment/side kick to Giroux. I hope by maybe moving a player like Schenn, we can rely more on Couturier to chip in offensively. I think by assigning him to a defensive role, we've held him back from becoming the player he can be. He's just so good as a shut down checker that we may be worse off defensively if we let him go offensively.

One day it'll be the Flyers time. I love the team we have in place and think they're good enough to make it happen with a few breaks.

I expect Couturier to put up a lot of points next year, he plays the hard minutes and rarely played in PP situations (I believe) and still had 39 points as a 21 year old.

This pic was RT by extraskater earlier in the day. Bunch of craps + Markov.
