Does anything happen if you go over budget in franchise?

I'm nearing the trade deadline, hovering around .500 and I want to make a push. Plenty of good vets on the trade block that I'd be interested in, problem is I'm right up against my budget limit.

I've made a trade before that put me over budget, but when I realized this I quickly made another move to drop down below the budget threshold. So it appears it's a "soft" cap so to speak.

But my question is whether or not exceeding the budget limit comes with any consequences. Has anybody gone over budget at the deadline and finished out their season?

Well I've played on about 3 weeks after the deadline, currently $8m over budget and haven't received any prompts or notifications related to it

My only concern is I'll be facing some sort of penalty in the offseason. Will have to wait and see I guess!

I'm not sure but I think you'll just have less room in the offseason. You probably won't be able to resign all of your big name guys in the offseason, and if you can, you won't have the room to sign any big time free agents.

Basically, I'm pretty sure you'll "feel" the penalty for going over budget when you try to resign or sign guys in the following offseason

Well if that's the case I might be alright. I have cliff lee and Fernando Rodney coming off the books and I have no intention of resigning them. That's a combined $24m in expiring contracts. And I also have Arod who is making $10m and I'm assuming he will retire after this season because he's 39.

So I have potentially 35-40 million coming off the books so hopefully I'm alright :)

Seems like to start the franchise all of your players are in one year deals. So you pretty much keep who u can or want after the first season

Also can't sign draft picks.

I've already signed my draft picks before I went over....so I should be good there. Hopefully all the money coming off the books in the offseason eliminates any penalties I'd face

I think this year you can still sign picks while over. I believe I was over and signed them.
