    AFL-Australian Football League

FS2 shows AFL games in my area. Times vary, but they've usually on around 1:30AM CST. I usually DVR them.

    On Saturday St. Kilda hammered Fremantle. 17 16 118 to 9 6 60

On Sunday Western Bulldogs and Essendon went down to the wire. 14 10 94 to 15 11 101

The score reads - Goals (6pts), Behinds (1pt), Total.

Still learning the rules, haven't picked a favorite club yet.

    I enjoy watching the sport.

Does anyone else, on OS, follow Aussie Rules Football?

Not carried on TV much in my neck of the woods. Ever seen this game?

I found a site that has the upcoming FS2 listings. I will probably DVR at least some of them. I don't understand all of the strategy, but it is entertaining.

Aussie Rules TV Schedules. The following page has a brief summary of the coverage situation followed by the complete TV schedules for the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Regularly updated direct from the networks.

There is actually a small hurling club in my town. They have a couple nights per year where they invite beginners to try it out, but I've never tried it myself.

After looking at some You Tube videos and reading info, I've come to the conclusion that the sport is combination of soccer and basketball with the tackling element of Rugby.

I've picked Melbourne Football Club to root for.

Founded in 1858 and nicknamed the Demons.

I've been starting to get into it a little myself. I've been supporting N. Melbourne mainly because it was Sav Rocca's most recent club before he came to the Eagles. Stick with what you know, I suppose. They're having a decent season sitting at 10-7. Just got beat by Carlton on Friday (err... Thursday) by a score of 16, 13, 108 to 13, 8, 86. They fell behind early, clawed their way back into it, but the wheels fell off in the 4th. Disappointing as Carlton is fairly far down on the ladder. Although, I don't get to watch games much (haven't seen one all season) because I don't get FS2. So, I have to settle for just the match reports and highlights on AFL.com. Still really hazy on some of the rules, but it's a really fun game to watch.

Well the matches this weekend were a blow out and back and fourth.

Brisbane 16 14 110 v Gold Coast 8 8 56. This match was a blowout from the get go, as the Q score line below shows.

                Brisbane Lions 7.7 10.11 11.12 16.14 (110)
                Gold Coast 1.2 3.3 4.4 8.8 (56)

The Sunday match between Collingwood and Adelaide was entertaining and tied with 8' left in Q4. That's when Adelaide ran away with it. Adelaide was pretty wasteful, hitting the post 6 times, which resulted in 6 Behinds instead of Goals.

                Collingwood 12 10 82 v Adelaide 14 14 98

                COLLINGWOOD 3.0 5.4 8.8 12.10 (82)
                ADELAIDE 5.5 7.8 9.13 14.14 (98)

Been an exciting fight for that 8 spot. Between the Crows, Magpies and Gold Coast that's anybody's game right now. Gold Coast has a very favorable matchup with St. Kilda next round while Adelaide gets West Coast and Collingwood gets a tough Port Adelaide side.

Something I haven't quite figured out. When a player is tackled, what determines if it's a free kick or a throw in the air by the ref?

The match between Adelaide v West Coast was back and forth until Q4. WC Eagles kicked it into overdrive and ran away with the match.

                      ADELAIDE 6.0 9.2 15.7 16.9 (105)
                      WEST COAST 5.5 10.8 14.11 20.16 (136)

Overall a great match to watch and that battle for the 8th spot gets interesting again.

That's a definite good thing as it gives the Kangaroos some breathing room off that 9 spot after another disappointing loss against Geelong today. Granted the Cats are an extremely talented team, but that's the second match in a row where the Kangaroos have looked iffy at best. Now it's a log-jam for spots 6-10, but the Kangaroos have a pretty decent schedule from here on out, starting with the Giants next week.

                          Re: AFL-Australian Football League

Something I just noticed that I really, really love: The AFL playoff bracket. It starts something like this:

                          1 v. 4
                          5 v. 8
                          6 v. 7
                          2 v. 3

Seems counter-intuitive, but actually it's pretty cool what they do. The winners of those outer two games go straight to the preliminary finals (truly the semifinals), while the winners of the inner (lower seeded) games face the LOSERS of the outer games in what they call the semifinals (I liken it in my head to the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs, in a way.). I love the thought that the higher seeded teams get rewarded with really two shots at the title, if need be.

I've come to the conclusion that Collingwood should be called Jekyll and Hyde!

Q1 was rather blah, between Collingwood and Port Adelaide. An earth shattering 21 total points. Q2 Collingwood ran away but PA came back and pulled ahead in Q3, briefly, before Collingwood took the lead again and pulled away in Q4. PA was able to make it look closer than it really was with a very late goal.

                            COLLINGWOOD 2.3 6.6 9.7 11.10 (76)

                            PORT ADELAIDE 1.0 5.7 8.8 10.10 (70)

18 year old Kayne Turner will make his AFL debut for North Melbourne against Greater West Sydney this week. He was the 25th overall pick of last season's rookie draft.
