Press Row Podcast - Making "The Golf Club"

It’s unheard of! Developing, publishing, and supporting an independent sports games on next-generation console platforms? In 2014? The sports game landscape may have gotten smaller in the past few years, but the team at HB Studios saw an opportunity where others saw risk. The result is “The Golf Club”, a simulation golf experience that will soon hit the PS4 and the Xbox One (and is already available on Steam Early Access). The 94th edition of the Press Row Podcast features an extended 1-on-1 discussion between host Richard Grisham (@richgrisham) and The Golf Club Executive Producer Peter Garcin (@rawktron); the two discuss a host of issues, including key game design decisions, how the team navigated and processed the Early Access feedback, going through the console submission process, and the freedom and anxiety that comes from attempting to self-publish a sports game in today’s complex landscape. It’s an open, honest conversation that provides a unique look at how The Golf Club is coming together in its stretch run.

A new model is starting to emerge in gaming that relies less on expensive licensing, exclusive deals, and other monopolistic practices... to a more open, user-generated content, customization model.

And let me tell you... IT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING !!... We the gamers benefit when the power is in the user's hands and there is competition.

Sports gaming is a little bit behind in that regard.

    All hail The Lord Gaben!

"To be concrete about it, 10 times as much user content comes from the users as comes from us. So we think we are super productive and badass, but we cannot compete with our own customers as regards the production of content. The only company we ever met that kicked our *** is our customers. We would never try to compete with them." -Gabe Newell, Owner of Steam/Valve
