    Thinking about buying nhl15, questions

It has been several years since I've played EA Sport's hockey game.

    • I notice there is a GM mode. Can I also play the games and control the players in GM mode or am I limited to GM functions only?

    • If I can't also play the games I'm not interested, but how realistic is GM mode in terms of contracts, draft, trade logic, etc?

    • Are there minor league teams with a draft and if so, do you scout players for the draft?

    • The last time I played the game there was a special category of player. I forget what he was called but essentially he was a sort of thug who could rough up the opposing players. If I controlled a different player the "thug" would aggressively forecheck etc on his own. Is this still in the game?

I have a lot of other questions but that will suffice for now.

    Thanks for any replies.

    - Yes you can control the players in gm mode

    - If you download the revamped rosters its pretty accurate.

    - Yes the AHL and some euro teams plus the CHL and yes you have scouts.

    - there are enforcers but no the way you are talking about

The GM and trade logic has been abysmal for years. GM's of opposing team won't sign high draft picks making them free agents next year. Trades are a complete train wreck and there really is no logic involved. You will get the most lopsided trade offers for your superstar players.

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning toward getting the game this year for the ps4.

Follow up question - what does an enforcer do? Fight?

any idea/chance of KHL teams getting back into NHL '15? Apparently they were in the NHL game a few years ago

An enforcer's job is to deter and respond to dirty or violent play by the opposition. When such play occurs, the enforcer is expected to respond aggressively, by fighting or checking the offender. They are used to protect star players as well.

              I doubt they will be.

See this is one of the issues I want to see in the weekly updates of EA instead of those arenas.

To the OP, it seems to me that based on the top 2 questions of yours, you love to play BaGM like me. My piece of advice, wait until the X1 players test 15. Because in the past, its just full of craps....lies after lies after lies after lies. But I would understand if you get this game since its been awhile for you.

I agree - enough about the graphics. We know it will be beautiful. Are they finally revamping GM mode? Making any changes?

To OP, it depends on what you want. Frankly, other than some better physics, the game has changed little since NHL 10. GM mode is pretty much the same.

The only machine I own is a ps4 so I'm limited to 15.

I understand what an enforcer is, I'm curious how the game implements this. If I'm not controlling the enforcer will he automatically go after someone if they engage in dirty play?

One of the best I remember was Clark Gilles with the Islanders. Al Arbour kept him on the scoring line with Bossey and Trotier.

For some reason ea has it where anybody goes after the opposition after a dirty hit of whatever. I've seen numerous times playing with the pens Maata engages in a fight and I've never seen him fight once

It was prior to 2010 when I owned a hockey game. When I was a kid I was a big Blues fan. Then I became a cop and worked traffic for a lot of the Blues games on Clark Street and I reached a point where I didn't want to have anything to do with hockey. Now that I'm retired I guess I"m mellowing in my old age. :-)

I don't remember fighting being in the game the last time I played. Do you have to control the guy fighting or do you just watch them fight?

As he said, they implemented a system in 14 to make players respond to big/ dirty/repeated hits by initiating fights. The idea was OK, as it's more common now for players to respond as such even after legal hits, even as fighting declines overall due to fewer "staged" fights. Unfortunately, it was overdone initially, and while toned done post-release, it still resulted in odd matchups at times. The frequency and timing were somewhat improved, so hopefully they ironed out some of the kinks.

They are user controlled. They finally ditched the bad first-person fighting last year and replaced it with something similar to NHL04. L-stick pushes/pulls, R-sticks punches, triggers duck, dodge, etc. The mechanics of it are pretty good, but again, the results can be wonky. Stick skills can usually overcome ratings & size advantages.
